Fascinating......a real piece of extremely relevant example of the development of the Afrikaaner language. At the time of their exodus, Afrikaans was a spoken language but not one yet standardised, and all official documents were in Dutch. On the dawn of Afrikaans becoming a standardised language, a tiny group of Afrikaaners left for Patagonia, where the Afrikaans/Dutch seperation had not yet been formalised, and although their dialect is far more Afrikaans than Dutch, it is far more Dutch than modern day Afrikaans, and I was mesmirised to hear it. A priceless time-capsule of what Afrikaans sounded like in 1900. Thank you for posting.
@dylandutoit23814 жыл бұрын
It sounds just like contemporary Afrikaans. Younger people of South Africa don't use all the available words, or 'big words', I've noticed. It sounds like some of these Afrikaner descendents from Pantagonia have lost comfort speaking Afrikaans, might be why it doesn't completely sound Afrikaans.
@AapVanDieKaap2 жыл бұрын
@@dylandutoit2381 There doesn't seem to be a notable difference between the way they speak and modern Afrikaans. While not standardized, Afrikaans was written and widely spoken instead of dutch long before 1900. Dutch was an official language in South Africa until 1971 although nobody spoke it anymore by then.

I was in BA in 1990 and met a woman, Dora MAcDonald. She owned a store, Lembranca in palermo. She was probably around 75 or so. We got to talking an she told me she was born in Santa Cruz I think and that her parents were Boers. I didn't know much about SOuth Africa but on a few other visits she told me a bit about life growing up in Patagonia. I didn;t think much of it until I moved back in 1996 and she was in her last years. wish I would have asked her more about her culture and how they mixed with the locals.

The history you learnt is so distorted. seems your justice is only for white people. Africans have suffered much at the hands of white colonialist and still do to this day. How much longer should Africans suffer in their only land, tell us one European country that offers Africans land and title to it. Africans have never appropriated any ones land . Africa is reclaiming its history and wealth stolen by Europeans

My father sold the place and we moved to Pampa Pilala (?). We lived there, we were a family of 10 children. We lived there until 1918 and then my father moved again to Samatin (?). wat my verbaas het is die anglisisme wat alreeds bestaan het - soos "laaik" gebruik (bv. ek laaik die musiek).
