Hello, basically I used 2.5''x12'' lumber with metal braces screwed together on each corner. I also used 6' stakes every 2' along the sides screwed in for added support. The rocks on the right side add support but are mostly just cosmetic. Good luck with your pond!

Hey Paul, sounds like a nice build! I think it just depends entirely on the dimensions and goals for your project and honestly I don't know enough about aqua blocks at this point to have an opinion. I've still been happy with my current setup for what that's worth. Best of luck!

What is the size of your bog, and is it just supported by rocks, or do you have wood support? How deep is the pea gravel, if that is what you are using. Your pond and set up is amazing, you have done a great job!
@brentjohnson31474 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The bog is Approx 4' w x 15' L x 1' deep just pea gravel. I have a clean out valve by the fall. Yes, it's a wood frame with 6' stake supports and some rocks.
@KoiTimeUSA4 жыл бұрын
very nice setup.. how do you remove the solids? any new updates?
@brentjohnson31474 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have a 4" ball valve at the end of my bog. I have a 15' x 4" pipe that I plug into it. When opened up with the pump running the solids are brought to the top and pushed out. I have 4" pipe running in a tree like pattern under the gravel that the water flows through up into the gravel. When the valve is open, the dirty water does not run over the fall into the pond. I luckily have a common area behind my home to send the water to. In the warmer seasons I will do this every 1.5 to 2 weeks or as needed. I made a stick / tool to move the gravel around during this process which brings lots of solids to the top and out the drain. Works great for me, but probably not for everyone. When the weather warms up I will share a demo video of my process when it warms up!

Great pond But id love some info on your filter is it all pea gravel and does the water come in on the top of the gravel or from the bottom as im building one the same
@brentjohnson31474 жыл бұрын
Thats pretty exciting that you are building a new pond! Yes, all pea gravel, the water runs from the pump through 4" pvc underneath the gravel. The pvc is setup like a tree and branches off every approx 1'. I scored the pvc multiple times on all sections. The idea is to slow down the water. I have a leveled ball valve behind each fall to control water flow. I plan on cranking out another video soon to better explain my setup. Best of luck with your build!

You said you have a "drain" at the bottom on a timer that acts as an aerator? How does that work? I'm confused how a drain would release air. Awesome pond!
@brentjohnson31474 жыл бұрын
Hello, great question. I know I rushed through how everything works. The terms bottom drain is a bit confusing in the pond world. Basically the idea is that there's a pipe at the bottom of the pond with a protective covering to keep large debris out. It basically is just designed to get the un-circulated and dirty water draining back to your skimmer box to be cleaned by the filter system. It's really more like it's being pulled from the pump and some natural gravity vs the term bottom drain which sounds like your able to drain water from the bottom of your pond out. Some bottom drains come with an aeration option. This is a good idea to help keep junk from settling on the bottom, it also creates a good atmosphere for your fish. The air is created from a separate aeration unit outside the pond. The air pipe runs from the unit and follows the bottom drain where there's a hook up for it. Long explanation ha ha!

Brent Johnson thanks for that!

How do you pr3vent Cranes and Herons eating your fish ?
@brentjohnson31473 жыл бұрын
I have lost a few fish to herons for sure over the years. I have a little schnauzer that has been good at scaring them away. Once she spooks them they dont seem to come back. How's that for an unconventional answer! The depth of the pond along the edges also helps. I dont really like to net the pond until winter.
