Bogalusa | What's in a Name? | Lost Louisiana (2007)

This segment from the “What’s in a Name, Part 4” episode of the series “Lost Louisiana” from March 15, 2007, features Charlie Whinham’s visit to Bogalusa in Washington Parish. He talks to Marilyn Bateman, the Executive Director of the Bogalusa Chamber of Commerce, about the origin of the city’s name and the role of the Great Southern Lumber Company in developing the city. Whinham also visits Studio in the Country, a music recording studio, and speaks to chief engineer Gene Foster, producer Jim Bateman, and owner Debbie Farmer about the musicians who have recorded their albums at the studio, the success of their albums, and why the studio is conducive to recording music.

Bogalusa, named after our creek, is a Choctaw term meaning, Water's Deep or Water's Dark.. Bouge Chitta River is water's cold. One of my Choctaw Grandma's told me the story of a little Choctaw boy cought him up a turtle and tied it up with vines. Run fetched his father. Got back to the creek bank and turtle was gone. Bug got a loosa. Now you know the rest of the story. So there's that.

I'm from Bogalusa. My uncle owned a good bit of the town in the 70s and 80s. I've also recorded at studio in the country. I've always known where the name came from, and my grandfather and father both retired from the paper mill. I love seeing this. My friend lives in the old Sullivan mansion

I never got to see the pine tree in. By the time I was born it was a Piggly wiggly. If I'm correct the pine tree burned down
