We get a lot of questions about the truck. People want to know how it goes both on and off road and whether we've encountered any issues. Generally the answers are always the same and that we wouldn't have it any other way and that it goes very well.
Although occasionally we encounter an issue that we have to work through.
Getting bogged up near Darwin during the Wet Season was one of those times.
We had a feeling that it wasn't going to be an easy track, however knew there was capable hands and heavy machinery on the other side should anything go wrong. Would never have attempted it otherwise.
After following another vehicle in front of us who got stuck themselves on the left hand side, we took the right hand side that appeared to have firmer ground. We slipped off the hard ground into the ruts with the front diff ending up on hard ground so wasn't going anywhere with no traction on front or rear wheels.
Quite a number of beers later, covered in mud and some unsuccessful attempts to pull the truck out we had the van unhitched and pulled the truck out with a 25 tonne loader the next day.
All part of the adventure and a lot of good fun.

Mum's face says it all , I don't think this was dads first time getting the rig stuck, but these are the moments that at the time seem overwhelming but I bet everyone that was there looks back at this as part of an amazing time in their life's. With all the comments I bet most of the "experts" probably wish they'd had the guts to pack their family up and set of on a adventure like this.

I have been driving around the outback, working cattle stations All over the North, getting bogged to the eyeballs more times than most people have had hot dinners. If its wet 4 things Must be in my recovery kit. A long handle shovel, a small chainsaw, a crow bar, and a kangaroo jack. A roll of soft fencing wire is also super handy. Step1. Place kangaroo jack base in spare tire, for enlarged footprint, and also safety. place under tray, as close to center as possible, or under tow ball tounge. ( yes take of your tow ball first). Step2. Use chainsaw to cut logs. the NT is fantastic for small long skinny trees, with the exception of the Barkly tablelands lol. Step3 Place crowbar down the handle of the kangaroo jack for some serious extra leverage. Step4 Lift 2 wheels Way up out of the bog. Step5 push logs under the wheels. If you have long skinny logs, it can pay to wire twitch them together. And Step6 Drive home before dinner is cold. This technique has worked ALMOST every time. except on the Barkly tablelands, where there's hardly a tree in sight. If your lucky you might find some rocks

The winch is obviously to add weight over the front wheels for more traction. I'm guessing when he got home he added another 2 winches to the front thus improving traction. I use my winch to drag me out of trouble but hey, I'm weird like that.

Couldn’t agree more, and god forbid they know what ‘MA’ - mechanical advantage is and how to achieve that via pulleys and winch extensions for a 2:1 or 3:1 even a 4:1 MA. Typical testosterone fuelled Male had to go through the puddle to make the biggest splash, didn’t walk it though and hit the chassis, mean while 2m to his left was competent ground lol. So you wrapped a snatch strap around the bull bar and then joined another strap to it by using a shackle? Miracle no one was seriously injured!
@sww82

There is a very substantial bracket behind the bullbar that is bolted to the chassis, definately strong enough recovery point, only concern would be sharp edges like the rear edge of bullbar.

@@sww82 Incorrect, in this instance. If the 4x4 accessory shop fits and pins the bullbar to the chassis rail after alignment then yes. Re watch the start when the fourby is snatching the truck, the whole bullbar shifts, was never fitted correctly, even the kids can be heard saying ‘oh no the bull bar’.

Maybe there are reasons the winch was not used...we were not there. One thing I would like to add is that everyone take a course or two on self-recovery. The difference between static and dynamic rigging and the different recovery techniques and gear. Hopefully the children and or other people were not in the line of pull when the pulls were attempted. If possible use soft shackles. Those steel parts become deadly projectiles when they break. I have seen them penetrate a double walled truck box. It can and will kill people. A broken, whipping steel winch line can cut off an arm, leg or head. Yes, a smaller truck can pull out a larger truck with a snatchem strap; but the rigging has to be proper (to the frame). Be safe out there.

This reminds me of a time a friend told me about that took place in L.A. Calif., ( U.S.A. ) around 1973. Two friends went to Griffith Park on a Saturday night, the road was [ officially ] Closed ! They were drinking beer. And a rain storm happened upon them and one of them said; " Hey Do you really think we ought to go down this road "( down a hill ) ? And the other said; " Aw it 'll be alright " ! So they went down that " Hill " and slid off the road. So then they called a " Tow-Truck " It was driven by this Mexican , And he slid down off the road and he got stuck ! Later he freed himself, and tried to pull my friends out w/ a winch and that Failed . After that this dude in a White Pick-up Truck ( w/ a Chain ) happened by, and they got him to pull them out ! Which he finally did ! But then the dude wanted to hang around them, and " he was Weird " ! And they finally the Got Rid of him and went home just as the Sun was coming up ! What a bad partying night !! The Morel of this Story is, Is to learn from other people's Mistakes !!

Rule No.1 Have a bullbar mounted (Warn) self recovery winch that works & know how to use it. Rule No2. Have a high lift jack & chains that can be used as a self recovery winch kit & know how to use it. Rule no.3 Buy some maxtrax or eBay cheapies & know how to use them. There where plenty of winch points there with those trees, could have been out of there in less than 5 minutes with some pre-trip preparedness.

BHP have authorised staff who under the relevant Act can issue a fine. No different to Councils or even some shopping centre car parks. It is not a public road and you enter at own risk and must follow the owners rules..meaning no tearing up the road, among other things. The road owners set the rules as stated previously here. It is not rocket science.

A winch and anchor is a standard for such a ride with a trailer for off road. You can 2-1 rig it for 2x the pull weight. With the $$$ for that a good winch is equal to very little cost. Lots of regular 4x4's have them. At least you are comfortable being stuck not getting to where you want to go I guess?
