So for those who don't know, Whisky is a GUI version for apple's Game Porting Toolkit + Crossover's Wine flavour. More experienced mac users can use the terminal method (Apple's official solution), but it has no advantages and Whisky is better overall. Its basically Proton with DX12.

WARNING TO EVERYONE TRYING TO USE THIS: This option is solid for playing some games and even profesional software that is not on mac although if trying to play a game that contains anticheat it will not run it. Reason being is the anti cheat checks the processes being run on the computer. Whiskey only uses wine which does not spoof processes it only spoofs the file location. I have struggled with things like this on linux and my sisters mac before so i just thought everyone should get a fair chance to know.

Hey Bog, just wanted to correct you here: Whisky and Apple's GPTK are just flavours of Crossover's Wine with extra DX12 support, so they run identically to Crossover except in DX12 games, where they run even faster. As for Parralels, it doesn't run windows GAMES, it runs windows itself, so it is MUCH slower.

WINE is a piece of software that, rather than emulating a machine, it translates all (or as many as it can) Windows API calls into (typically) POSIX calls. The best part about Whiskey is that it's a community-driven active open source project, not a potentially for-profit or for-spyware venture. As is Wine, on all platforms. @@nathanripplinger4206 its an assembly language instruction set that follows RISC principles (like RISC-V does) as opposed to CISC (like Intel's x86, which is what windows uses). Basically its the language that the program compiler compiles the OS software (which is C for pretty much every OS) into. And assembly languages have direct translations to binary, which is what the computer hardware actually speaks. As you might know, the older macbooks used Intel chips, and thus ran x86, whereas the newer M chips run ARM.

Holy Crap! This Whisky App actually seems to work! I don't know how or why, but it does! Also, this feels too good to be true and I am worried Apple will "fix" this in future editions of MacOSX. Apple doesn't "fix" this, because this isn't some sort of exploit. This app is kind of like an emulator, but instead of running the entirety of Windows on your Mac, which could cause major slowdowns, translates the game to something a Mac can run. At least I think that's how it works. Also it's officially called a translation layer.

Apple is actually working to fix this, but not in the way you think. Go watch one of the Apple keynotes (e.g. where they announced iOS 18 back in June). They actually talk about this (it's called GPTK on their end, stands for Game Porting Tool Kit) and how they've worked to improve it over the year before. However, GPTK is really intended for developers to use to get their games up and running on Apple Silicon with minimal work. It really isn't meant to be used by end users, though it can be. The Whisky application just makes it easier for the end user. And, not for nothing, but I don't think you're actually using OS X on an M1 Mac. The last version of OS X (El Capitan) came out 2 years before the M1 chips. It's been macOS since version 11.

Just in case, Parallels usually works much better with older games that use directx 9 and/or were released before like 2013, that's because they use x87 (not x86, x87) instructions which are very slow to emulate under Rosetta 2 (it's a translation layer that allows x86 Crossover/Whisky bottles to run). As a free alternative, you might want to try vmware virtual machine, it's free and might perform adequately in older games.

doing it this way would not allow for games that have native mac versions to use that for potentially better performance and less issues. also this likely breaks anticheats. so it may be better to have the native mac version for games that have an anticheat whisky is not compatibile with but do have a native mac version. the only one i can find for sure without knowing what is actually current comaptible is fortnite although the native mac version is basically abandoned.
