Hi everyone! New signed song, one of the best songs in history. As usual, this is my own interpretation of the song and I am still learning BSL so some of the signs I use might differ to those you have learned or be incorrect. My BSL translation is below:

BSL Format is completely different to English as it is it's own language within it's own right. sentences are formed differently and there are no connection words such as "if" "but" "so" etc. Sign language is direct and has to be for information to be passed quickly. All the information is there just not in the same order as English. The grammar breaks down into this: PHONOLOGY + SYNTAX + SEMANTICS (Sign patterns) (sign order) (meaning) Phonology: HANDSHAPE + PLACEMENT + MOVEMENT + DIRECTION + ORIENTATION +NMF (NMF=Non-manual features) Syntax: Timeframe + Topic + Comment (when) (what) (action/description) Semantics: ICONIC/ VISUAL SIGNS e.g. Book (which if signed anyone would understand) ARBITRARY (not look like) SIGNS e.g. Eleven So sign language can actually get complicated because if one of these areas are wrong the sign does not make sense and has to be done correctly in the correct signing space. this is awful - the first line of the song is Is This The Real Life, You signed Is This Real.... sadly, you signers have ytour own grammar and BSL does not interpret exactly what is being said,. As for the facial expression, why do deaf people have to over exaggerate it... PS, yes im hard of hearing too.

Hi George, I'm sorry to hear you dislike my interpretation of the song but to class it as "awful" is simply unfair. You are entitled to your own opinion but it should not attack and affect the hard work of other people in such a negative way. I always do my own interpretation and translation and this is always stated in the videos, therefore the fact that you don't agree with the translation does not mean is not correct. In fact, this is a translation into BSL, not a translation of the English into English. If I take the example you are mentioning, I'm cleary not affirming "this is real", I'm looking around and wondering if everything around me is real or if I am dreaming, which is exactly the meaning of the song. With regards of the expression, classing all "deaf people" as "over expressive" is incredibly wrong and inaccurate. To start with, I AM hearing, not Deaf. And secondly, facial expression is an incredibly personal thing and it has nothing to do with being deaf, hearing or whatever. The Deaf community is wonderful and BSL is such a beautiful and expressive language, if you are clearly frustrated and hate "signers" and "BSL" then you should clearly be looking at other videos instead as we don't need people with your bad vibes around ;)

But the thing is - the song has its own words - and when you are signing it to someone else, what they are understanding is going to be vastly different. Therefore, the meanings of th song will also be different not be the same as what was intended,. Sadly - the facial expressions is so over exaggrated in the deaf world - you dont see hearing people do it that bad when emphasising something. OK, you are hearing, but the way you are signing and you facial expressions, i feel that some one in your family ( parent, sibling ? ) is deaf and you have become "institutionalised" to it. I was looking at this video because i was having a discussion with other friends who are a bit hard of hearing, and truth be told, they are mortified !

What you still don't seem to understand is that I produce my own interpretations of the songs for Deaf people to understand it the way they want and feel, there is never one single way to understand something and for one person, that song might mean something completely different to someone's else because of their own life experience and I'm not talking Deaf vs. hearing in here. One size DOES NOT fit all and people, deaf, hearing, blind, whatever, etc. have the right to understand and interpret their stories however they want. I would suggest you and your mortified friends to find something in life you enjoy and spend your time in that rather than bothering other people who do not agree with your narrow-minded way of thinking. Clearly against the 2 dislikes you are managing to get your friends to click, there are over 5,800 viewers who thoroughly enjoyed my video and almost 80 who liked it, numbers speak by themselves ;) And no, I have no Deaf family or relatives at all, so you definitely have the wrong end of the stick on that as well.

Exactly - you produce "your own" interpretations which can mislead the end person thinking thats what IS being said, I dont sign, but i could wave my hands about making random words and that would be my interpretation. I feel if you are interpreting something - its really should be word for word, just like subtitles ( even with their 0.2% error margin ) I dont actually care about the ratings, of course people are going to down mark me, but you know where i am actually coming from., The other friends, 2 of them are actually deaf and part of the deaf-community and absolutely hate BSL as it is so misleading.

+George Porge I really don't understand where you're coming from, George. BSL is a beautiful language, and when any songs or poems are translated from one language to another they are never translated word-for-word. They are translated so that the meaning and the feeling are conveyed, and make the most of the beauty of the target language. As for the facial expressions, such non-manual features are part of the grammar of BSL, and add meaning to the manual signs, or change it completely. It's a great video.
