First Mistake: Making a movie about Freddie Mercury Rated PG-13 when it deserves to be Rated R. Second Mistake: Bryan Singer as the Director.

@@Vincent_Luciano_Simpson I think it depends on what aspects of his life you focus on and how you're portraying those things you mentioned. An R rating doesn't denote quality or uniqueness. It's just a rating that's assigned somewhat inconsistently by the MPAA. Not everything has to be Wolf of Wall Street. These days, I don't really even pay much attention to the rating of a movie. Honestly, that's pretty goddamn disrespectful for the rest of the band to hijack the narrative of their story like that at Freddie's expense. I'm only a casual Queen fan, and even *I* know that Live Aid performance happened long before Freddie was diagnosed with HIV. Hell, they could have ended on a far better dramatic note out of Freddie having to film that music video for "These Are the Days of Our Lives" a few months before he passed, even though he was physically wasting away at the time and had to be shot in black-and-white to cover up his deterioration. That moment helps summarize how brave and bold Freddie Mercury was as an artist, even as he was on the verge of death. Now I know why Sacha Baron Cohen turned this shit down, good for him.

Another thing I found was in error was the timeline for We Will Rock You. In the movie, it shows as being constructed in 1980, when Freddie had already cut his hair. The song was recorded in 1977...when his hair was still long. You can search for the video they recorded back then to see. But Martin is wrong about being diagnosed 3 years after Live Aid, but not by much. The concert was in July 1985. It was officially announced in 1987 that he was diagnosed with AIDS. But there were reports in the British press in 1986 that he had been tested for HIV; but Freddie just denied it. No one will ever know when he truly found out. But yes the movie took liberties by showing that he announced to the band before Live Aid that he has AIDS, which didn't happen. But Brian May talked about this before that he did in fact hold a meeting with the band to tell them and didn't want it brought up again afterwards. Is this movie formulaic? Yes, but so are most bio pics, especially about musicians. I wasn't looking for an Oscar caliber movie. This was a feel good, crowd pleasing movie and I enjoyed it. But I can't deny the writing is sloppy, which probably has alot to do with the change in lead actor and directors and the studio rushing the project through anyway.

Very pleased with this review. You gentlemen really nailed it.
Couldn’t disagree more with what’s said here. Think this film is as subjective as they come. In regards to the We Will Rock You part, of it didn’t go down the way it did in the film it’d be cinematically dead. You can’t have everything the way it is. You have to exaggerate to make it s better onscreen experience. I love Queen and know a lot about them and their history (something I feel you guys probably don’t barring a quick Wiki and a few interviews) so I know a lot of what happened in the film didn’t go down the way it did. But biopics especially musical ones are hard to be cinematically accurate and entertaining at the same time. The boring bits in music, rehearsals, writing etc have to be done in a better on screen portrayal than just writing in an office or studio. Thought that’d be obvious.
@Merdicano6 жыл бұрын
I agree with your opinion, myself I thought the movie was good enough to be held on it's own, only problems were yes, some of the writing issues, and I can agree definitely that not everything can look exactly accurate nor they can't please everyone, that's is something for sure

sort of disappointed that this movie is so inaccurate and by the numbers. I used to really like Queen, but I've grown to sort of loath the band over the past few years due to the over-saturation of their songs especially Bohemian Rhapsody. I remember back in 2010-2012+ there was this commercial that used the footage from Wayne's world where they were playing Bohemian Rhapsody in the car and it would play CONSTANTLY I mean every single commercial break it would play especially on channels like cartoon network and I think that was when I started to hate the song and the band because I couldn't get away from their music, especially that song. it's the same today as well where I can't listen to the radio without hearing "we will rock you" or Bohemian Rhapsody and I just feel so burnt out with Queen, which is a shame because their music was a part of my childhood given that my mom is a Queen fan and we would listen to their songs whenever we drove to the Oregon coast, but this over-saturation of queen- especially in recent years has just drove me away and I know people will hate me for it because Queen is such an amazing band, but I just can't help feeling that way.
@TheDreamingJune6 жыл бұрын
That's perfectly understandable. Over-saturation can make anyone dislike a band/artist they used to love or at least lessen your interest in them. I love Queen but I have a feeling a lot of their fans are now tired of Bohemian Rhapsody being used as their staple song when they have other amazing songs in their discography.

I’d rather watch Freddie being interviewed, that would be better, this sounds like an extended music video.

Same here, but I love “Under Pressure” now. I heard the MTV Unplugged “Layla” before the original, and now can’t stand the Unplugged version.

Fellas, I enjoyed your review, and it cracked me up. However, I have to disagree with you guys. I LOVED this film. I really wanna see it again, to be honest. It's easily one of my top 10 music biopics. BTW, it's true, the movie did take a lot of creative licenses, but in truth... *all biopics do that,* and I do mean all of them. Do you remember the character Marlene in "Ray" that made Ray sleep with her in exchange for managing his career and giving him a place to stay? She never existed in real life. You remember the character Jackie that played Tina Turner's best friend in "What's Love Got to Do With It?" Never existed. Remember how Dr. Dre was basically Dudley-Do-Right in "Straight Outta Compton"? False. So yeah, despite the fact that Freddie was a little more subdued in real life, and "We Will Rock You" was actually released in the late '70s and not the early '80s, and Freddie received his HIV diagnosis in 1987 and not 1985 before the Live Aid concert, I still adored this movie, and will be purchasing it on Blu-Ray. I still loved your review, though. You guys never fail to bring good insight as well as laughs.

This kind of outlines why I don't like biopics. I much prefer documentaries or specials on VH1 and the like, at least when it comes to learning about a famous person's life.

People seem to forget that Freddie Mercury was bisexual not gay. It’s just his flamboyant nature that makes people think he was full on gay when he was just bisexual.

Bohemian Rhapsody is about Freddie Mercury coming out as gay. That's why in the song he talks about killing man, the old him that was in the closet. There were some other messages but I forgot what they were there's a video on it that I'll try to find it put the link in the comment section.

No its not. The band has already dispelled this lie. And Freddie NEVER came out when he was alive. He was a very private person when it came to that. Stop reading in what you want to make yourself feel relevant.
@d.h.28486 жыл бұрын
@@chrisscorpio5651 I didn't read into anything. I watched a video that went into the song. Freddie never explicitly said what the song was. Also I never said he came out as gay before his death but he did make the song before he died (obviously). Have you never heard of hidden messages music and all other types of art.
@d.h.28486 жыл бұрын
@@chrisscorpio5651 The message as a whole was about people having to hide who they really are because of society and not living their best which is what Freddie clearly experienced because like you said he didn't come out as gay.....because..... ;)
