@lastflunky3 сағат бұрын
As an Atlantis nerd, I've looked into this a while ago. In a 2020 collider interview "Atlantis the Lost Empire: inside the troubled Disney production" the directors of the movie mention that Whedon wasn't really involved. Here's the part of the article that mentions it. "Unbeknownst to the team, Joss Whedon, then best known as the creator of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, had developed an Atlantis project a couple of years earlier during his brief, uneventful stint at Disney Animation. Whedon, who wanted to work on the type of elaborate animated musicals the Atlantis team was shying away from and completed a draft (with songs!) for a Marco Polo musical, described the Atlantis project as “Journey to the Center of the Earth meets The Man Who Would Be King.” The final film doesn’t contain any of these elements and the eventual Atlantis: The Lost Empire team never read his draft, but Whedon received credit anyway. “We weren’t aware of [that script’s] existence until Joss Whedon showed up in the end credits as a writer and we went, ‘The fuck is this?’” Trousdale recalled, matter-of-factly. “Then we found out, oh he wrote something with Atlantis in the title and the attorneys thought it would be easier to just cave in and give him credit instead of fighting his agent.” With his name in the credits and how quippy the movie is, it's understandable why it gets pointed out.

It feels like such a missed opportunity to make Xander almost like the Blue Mage of the group. He keeps getting possessed or cursed so why not allow him to keep knowledge and passive effects from these encounters. Like how he kept knowledge from being a soldier for a bit before that was forgotten. It could have made him more empathetic and "worldly" in a way the other characters weren't as well as actually give him a function within the group. If Buffy can't punch it, Willow can't magic it and Giles can't out-think it, then maybe Xander has an X factor wild card that may come in use. End the series with him as the most comically cursed man in history.

Xander not liking Willow back on its own is perfectly valid, if he just doesn't feel the same way she does. What's bad about it is that he's aware of Willow's feelings but never actually properly turns her down. Thinking that a character played by Alyson Hannigan isn't stunning is crazy, though. They gave her the typical Hollywood "ugly duckling" treatment of giving her loose-fitting clothes and not putting her in any makeup and pretending that that alone makes her not pretty (I'm honestly surprised they didn't give her glasses, too), but that shtick never actually worked if we're being honest with ourselves.

I have plenty of problems with Xander, but I will always defend his mistrust and hatred of Angel. And not just because he's jealous, though he obviously is. Reminder that when Angel turned evil, it was the others, not Buffy, he went after. He tried to kill Willow, he threw Xander out of Buffy's 2nd floor, bedroom window, he killed Jenny, and then he sent a squad to the library that broke his arm and put Willow in a coma. Before Angel turned, Xander was starting to warm up to him, even defending him to Kendra and talking down about him almost never anymore. After his turn (and Angel is still in a romantic relationship with his trigger) it's not surprising Xander doesn't just get over it and decide to like Angel.
@cheri3185Сағат бұрын
when Xander was possessed by Hyena's in "the pack", he tried to assault Buffy and ate the principle. He remembered everything but pretended he didn't. so either Xander knows when a person is possessed by a Demon/ have no soul (vampire or hyena) they have no control and its the demons actions and his hatred for Angel is JUST jealousy orrrrr .... he knows that they DO have control of their actions, his hatred for Angel is justified and he (Xander) is a grapist and a cannibal.

The hate on Skylar in Breaking Bad reminds me of how people hated Dexter's wife, Rita, in the show. Literally the only thing she did wrong was want to be with her husband and have him pull his weight around the house and caring for the kids. Fans were mad at Rita for trying to distract Dexter from his murder activities to bond with his baby and step kids. And what does she get for it, she gets murdered, by her husbands murder friend, in front of her baby while he is left in her blood to be found by her husband that caused all this. Thats when i left thw show, Rita doesnt deserve the hate or her treatment in the show

His loyalty is tested. It would require a better written military than season 4s tho... like Whedon clearly didn't have an understanding beyond, secret agency, army soldiers go blast. But man that could have been a story of Xander. Also Xander being with Anya seems hypocritical after all that he said about Angel, actually address and change that where it's not inspite of his beliefs against change and redemption, but that he comes to learn through Anya he was wrong. I love where Xanders character starts. It was a good base... a flawed person who would be great to watch grow, but they never cooked the dough, never took him anywhere

Xander's character aged as badly as Joss Whedon has, so it does make sense that the character woukd be harder to sympathize with now. However, I think constantly thinking of him as the Whedon self-insert makes him seem like a much worse character than he is. Whedon based the character on his high school self, and that's honestly probably as good a proxy as you can get for a character that is intended to offer white teenage dudes in the 90s and '00s a relatable anchor point in a series that is primarily about its female characters. The character's main arc is supposed to be about maturity and coping with the trauma of growing up in a dysfunctional family (most of which we learn about in season 3). For instance, he leaves Anya at the alter out of fear that he will become abusive like his father. Don't get me wrong, the character straight up sucks for most of seasons 1 & 2, but he's way more bearable from season 3 onward. His primary redeeming quality from that point onward is his unquestioning loyalty to his friends. Like, I still genuinely tear up at the moment he and Willow share at the end of season 6. His disapproval of Buffy's leadership in season 7 is significant because it represents a low point where Buffy has fucked up so bad that she even lost the trust and support of Xander, a guy whose been one of her most fanatical supporters. I grant the guy is still cringe and annoyingly immature, but it's easier to sympathize with the character when you know it's a defense mechanism he developed from everything he's been through. Joss Whedon definitely holds the character back from becoming the best version of himself, but I think it's the juxtaposition with the writing of every other character that makes Xander seem worse than merely a character with mediocre writing.
@lenr1122 сағат бұрын
Xander is a fictional character who is given lines to read . Any similarities to Joss Whedon are intentional
@steampunk_willy2 сағат бұрын
@lenr112 Yeah, that's probably why the character sucks so much in the earlier seasons. The longer the show went on, the more people that contributed to the writing and arc of the character, the more bearable the character became. There's no one forcing you to constantly remember the character is Whedon's self-insert, and the character is way more bearable if you don't think about that while watching the show.

@@Chameleonred5 it was "no weapon forged" but it was written hundreds of years ago... before RPGs existed lol

@@TheBloobster Thanks for that. Last watched Buffy nearly 20 years ago. I'm surprised that much stuck in my brain. "Rules as Written" indeed.

This video is making me realize part of the reason I did like him when I watched the series years ago is because he’s often paired up with an actually interesting character

What I've always found baffling is that Xander never faces any consequences for the "kick his ass" thing (aka when he doesn't tell Buffy that Willow is trying to get Angel his soul back). It is MENTIONED in passing in season 7, but that's it. He LIES to Buffy and makes her kill the man she loves in what is probably the saddest moment in the series, all because of his unrequired, creepy crush. And he just...gets away with it. Knowing what we do know about Whedon, and Xander being his self-insert, it makes sense though : a guy casually being a piece of sh*t to all the women around him and never taking accountability for his actions.

Honestly that the show migrates that shows in, the comics after, why him and dawn, why? But that thank god isnt in the show

To be fair to Xander, the world was at stake of being brought into a hell dimension - Buffy not giving her all in the fight against Angelus, because she LOVES him and there's a part of her desperate to get him back, could put lives in jeopardy. It's an understandable and valid choice not to tell her what Willow is doing, and so while his bias against Angel surely played a part in this decision, it really, truly is completely justifiable all by itself for ANYONE, it can't be denied, and that argument deserves a fair shot despite the bias feeling like an easy counter point to bring up. Buffy notably already refused to murder Angelus in their first fight, in "Innocence", making her possibly responsible for all the people Angelus goes on to kill.
@TacticusPrime3 сағат бұрын
I mean, she still needed to kill him. Soul or no. He opened the hell dimension statue thing and the only way to fix it was to kill him. So ultimately, he dodged the consequences for that reason. But obviously Whedon wrote it that way on purpose.
@blueberryrazz86373 сағат бұрын
Honestly, what difference would it have made? What, would she have gone easier on him? She was fighting for her life and the moment he grabbed the sword she would have had to kill him anyway.

people are so much madder at xander for saying "kick his ass" when he was 16 than they are at all the people they cheer on after they murder folks lol

In another universe this was the entire point of his character and Joss was actually writing a clever self insert lesson to young men to better themselves. And he lived happily ever after respecting people and women.

There's a huge difference between a character you love to hate and one your supposed to love but hate anyway. Except for Skylar, she's a normal woman. Leave here alone!

This video was very helpful cause I'm a huge dragon age fan and recently one of the writers said that when they were creating companions for dragon age origins they hated xander that prompt them to want fix his character, so alistair came into creation, I never watched buffy so I thought ''lmao why they hated this character so much?'' but now I get it.

Never forget that in the season 2 finale, Xander willingly decides not to give Buffy information that could impact her decision in battle. And the one moment 3 seasons later when it looks like its finally going to be revealed and addressed, they just dont go any further into it. It's never mentioned again, and Xander faces no consequences

I love Buffy, and I somehow didnt hate Xander until my second viewing with a friend. I watched it first in high school, and probably related to Xander too. But now I'm an adult and I fucking despise him. What a whiny, grody little wad of athletes foot.

I suggI suggest the following videos for Buffy: about your favorite characters, about your writing great sidekicks, about your favorite story arc, etc. In that way, we indirectly get a Buffy series video (maybe I shouldn’t say that :D)

I hated Xander from "The pack" episode in season 1, he tried to se*ually assault Buffy then pretends he doesn't remember and everyone just brushes it off. He was an awful character in an almost perfect show. I'm so glad people see it because at the time the show aired people loved him and I didn't get it.

I was obsessed with Buffy and Angel when it was new. I spent 200 bucks on a video capture card so I could record episodes of it while I was at work. It never really dawned on me how shitty Xander was, honestly, when I think back on the show, I don't even remember him really. It was kinda fucked up how that Priest guy gouged his eye out though.
