This is a bad design in my opinion. It is understandable to try to make it unique, but changing basic rules simly doesn't do it. This applies everywhere. No matter what you design, be it a game, website or a crossroad. The rules everyone expects you to abide by should always be respected.

Speaking of tampons... Back when I was a lonely Pvt in the Canadian Militia (CF Primary Reserves) more than half a lifetime ago, one of my Cpl's had an artistic flair for drawing life-like caricatures. At the time (this would be the late 70's) Tampon had a marketing campaign in which a famous female athlete or female TV/movie personality would be featured saying: _"What's a..._ [insert profession here] _... doing talking about feminine protection? Because I wanted to be the first!..."_ My Cpl (no-names, no pack-drill) drew up this scene of a rugged, battle weary GRUNT (Government Reject Unfit for Naval Training) highlander, balmoral on top of his head (my regt was/is a Canadian highland regt affiliated with the Royal Scotts), his helmet loosely dangling from the canteen on his webbing which itself was loosely hanging off his shoulders, an FN C1 or C2 (both Canadian versions of the FN FAL of which the C2 was a magazine fed section LAR with a heavier barrel and folding bi-pod forestock) propped up against some medium sized crates, some of which were stacked around him, while he's leaning forward, supported by a leg up on top of one of the crates, a smouldering cigarette dangling from his lips, with a caption below that read: *_"What's an infantryman doing talking about feminine protection?... Because I wanted to be the first..."_* It was a brilliant piece of artwork.

technically, even a 12.5 mm machine gun can take down a Hind if you can get a downward shot through the rotor. It happened a few times during the Afghanistan war with gunners sitting on mountain tops shooting down into the valley.

I have mostly been playing Soviet aircraft, and after I learned to actually control them, they are quite good. The US ones, on the other hand.... seem to suffer from a severe lack of dakka... In soviet helis, i can usually take down 2-3 bases, AND man them, even with gunships. In US ones, i take down 2 at best, and have men for 1 at most. In conclusion... Join glorious mother russia, you imperialist capitalist pigdogs. We have dakka.
@Nelsonwmj
@Nelsonwmj 7 жыл бұрын
Historically accurate though! Russia was always better with combining troop assault with dedicated gunship duties for a helicopter.

I don't know. I used to like the Soviet helis better as well. But then I started playing the US and came around to loving them. They are a bit better at their special tasks. On the downside you have to have better team communication. But don't get into a dogfight with a Cobra in your Hind. You ARE going to regret it! It runs circles around you while having 20 AND 30 mm guns and a few rockets as well. Those things are brutal in T2 games in the hands of a skilled player with a team behind him who knows what they are doing...
@nazamroth8427
@nazamroth8427 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I just try to avoid dogfights altogether if I can help it. For some reason, I can't hit anything reliably in the air in Heliborne. Like I see where my shots are going, place the "arc"'s end on my enemy, and it just does not hit. I feel like I have to overpredict their future position by about 50-100% in order to actually hit. Which is strange since this is the first game this has happened to me in. So yeah, mostly ground attack and troop ferrying for me.
@CallioNyx
@CallioNyx 7 жыл бұрын
That's kind of the thing. The Mi24 Hind is a prime example - heavy gunship/transport/assault helo, all in one. And sure, the Hind is an armored beast with enough power to airlift a bus (or its own ammunition) and still get speed records, but... uh... where was I going with this? Yeah. Okay. Shoot down a Hind, you've destroyed a pretty big investment. The US theorize it's better to have a transport helicopter escorted by a gunship or two, rather than have one machine do all the work. That thinking is right, I believe, but it still makes the Hind a pretty impressive machine.

Movement in the corner of your eye. That's not the point. Typically in games, red denotes bad guys while blue is for good guys. Even the US military uses this convention where bad guys are called the Red Team, and friendly fire incidents are referred to as Blue on Blue.

So instead of putting your flares on your already small and agile scout, who'll die when an enemy so much as sneezes at it anyway, you really should put your flares on your troop transports first. Reason being is that your transports are going to be slower and fly like a bus, and they'll need that extra little chance of survival. Attack helicopters can usually do without flares if you're flying close to the ground, and they have the armor to soak up maybe one missile. Here's to hoping you become less crap ya lovable gnome.

The way that the devs have laid out the progression system basically makes it so that the first hours of the game where you progress to tier 4 are essentially an extended tutorial. After you've unlocked all the helis, the idea is that players can play the era which they want to- whether it's Vietnam War Hueys or Gulf War Apaches.

Hey Jingles, just so you don't spread miss information, but Helo kills have no effect on the points at the top. It's all about taking over bases and having more control over the map. Also, since you have 2 scout helos, you should try and load some mortar teams in your deck and use the mortar control button "6". I know you know it exists, but you never used it this entire match, which could have helped you win the game, or at least push faster. Either that, or replace one of them with a UH-1B with the ATGMs, it makes a big difference at taking out convoys. One last thing, but flairs are a pretty big deal in Heliborne PvP. It's the difference between life and death a lot of times. I highly recommend trying to make room for at least 2 of your helos, or the ones you are more aggressive in to have flairs on them.

To Jingles: the OH-6 with the 40mm grenade launcher is nearly broken in how good it is. It can spot SPAMPADS, and has the firepower to wipe out bases and frag choppers. And it's tiny so have fun hitting it, plus max speed on the thing can outrun SPAMPAD missiles.

Since your recommending books, I'll toss out my own suggestion - Rober Mason's "Chickenhawk".

I recommend "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason, fantastic biographical story of how he learned to fly for the US Army and his experience flying Huey's in Vietnam.

Jingles, dude when are you going to jump into some history of some of these helicopters? I mean just from American movies I assume everyone knows what a Huey is and it's contribution to Vietnam, some might know the Cobra or Apache from the film Firebirds with Nicholas Cage or any number of other games. But I mean the russian ones? I think I shot down a HIND in one or two of the Metal Gear games..... Miss the old Jingles vid where it was "Here's the Vehicle, here's the history, here's what you can expect in game".... In fact I'd be willing to bet most of your subscriber base originally found you by looking up garage reviews in World of Tanks.

Alright Jingles! You seem to be pretty good in Heliborne with the Huey, so...challenge time! Do the same kinda thing in DCS World in the DCS Huey module (well, it's a bit expensive so maybe in the winter sale)! :D

*"No enemy Helos in PvE, 'Yet.'"* If / when they do so I hope they remember to make it a separate option. ^-< (it's rather fun to simply play to play and get Exp, but having that as an option would be kewl.)

It's REALLY silly to have the enemy players have the name displayed AT ALL... Really a noobie game for doing that.

Afaik there are no Helicopters that belong to the German Luftwaffe. They belong to the "Heeresflieger" or the Bundesmarine.

If you're in an area with known enemy MANPADS, drop a set of flares every ~8 seconds. It will break their IR lock and prevent them from shooting at you. Just a matter of surviving their first shot, if you didn't know they were there beforehand. Then you can poop out flares regularly afterward and be gtg.

Another good Vietnam heli pilot book is Chickenhawk, it's from a Huey pilot's perspective.

Gaijin had a similar game mode to Heliborne in their Apache Air Assault title. However, Activision pulled the plug on their funding, and so they only released it as a "beta" patch. It's a shame that Apache Air Assault didn't do well but, I understand why. There were some questionable decisions made for that game (the most egregious would be two difficult control sets depending on difficulty the player would set). I personally think that Apache Air Assault had the best control scheme above all games dealing with helicopters. No, not the control set that they brought in for April fools in War Thunder. That control set was the "Rookie" control scheme that Apache Air Assault had, and it's awful. The full control in "Realistic/Veteran" I mean; that was good stuff.

Anybody else notice that there's a camo for the UH-1D called "The Mighty Jingles"? Even has Jingles' face on the roundel.

I love this game and I'm really glad that I bought it. There is one thing that bugs me though: Armour isn't really a thing in this game but it should be. The Mi-24 is supposed to be armoured against everything up to .50 cal. It shouldn't be completely unkillable with that caliber but surely a 7.62mm machinegun should have to pump hundreds of bullets into it before it goes down. In particular that should apply to rifle fire from infantry squads on the ground. This of course goes for all other armored helicopters of course, especially the Apache but also things like the Huey or the second model of the Mi-8, which clearly has armor plating installed.

Yass Huey gunships, US Navy seawolves made me pretty familiar with those. That particular detachment used reticles drawn on the windshield with grease pencils to aim the rockets. However they had extra guns on the rocket pods as well,I believe I remember they called them flex guns.
