HMS Brazen? Oddly enough, at around 1997, I was a Sea Scout and visited the ex-HMS Brazen, then christened BNS Bosísio in the Brazilian Navy. I can't remember if the HFDF box was still there, since we didn't really spend much time in the operational nerve centers of the ship, but I was impressed. That was the first time I visited a more modern warship aside from the old destroyer escort museum ship 'Bauru' and the ageing (but sorely missed) aircraft carrier 'Minas Gerais', a very old Colossus Class aircraft carrier, which sadly wasn't saved from the scrappers. I remember distinctly how those Sea Wolf launchers impressed the hell out of me. Those batch 1 Type 22's had quite a personality. Ships today with all those geometric stealthy looks are so dull in comparison, even if it's for RCS efficiency's sake, just like the aircraft. Thanks for maintaining Brazen so well.

Great story Jingles. I have one for you as well. My first submarine was the USS Sea Dragon SSN-584. I went to a sub indoc class while waiting for them to return from West Pac. One of the things they talked about was the ballast system. The instructors try to cover each of the classes you could be in. They finally found a flip book for the Skate class and then said this was impossible as the Dragon still had manual ballast valves instead of electro-pneumatic. Then we talked about the torpedo-aiming computer on board. They could find nothing on it. Turns out the Skate class still had the manual gear torpedo aiming computer on WW2 submarines. I was a nuclear MM so I did not have anything to do with it but I heard that new to the boat Fire Control Techs had to be taught by the senior techs how to use the big box to get firing solutions. Luckily our weapons officer could use the system and combine it with a Trash-80 (yes that TRS-80) to get very accurate firing solutions so we got good grades when we were tested. Funny since from what I heard the people grading us had no idea how to operate our system.

I celebrated NYE on HMS Brazen in 1990, I think. She was docked in Manama, Bahrain. I'd have been 6 or 7 years old. I remember the crew put on a games room for the kids, but I escaped and was wondering the ship unsupervised. Hope noone got in trouble for that, I was a terror for that sort of thing. The reason we were invited was my Mum rang the British Embassy and asked if they could send her some sailors for Christmas. The Embassy staff had a good chuckle, but then realised she was serious. We had four sailors who hadn't been home in years over for Christmas day. One hadn't spoken to his mum in years. My mum made him get on the landline and call her, international charges be damned. I'll see if she can dig out any photos of your old crew mates in Xmas paper hats!

"The enemy Lushun is clearly lurking around the side of that island, hence all these torpedoes" - as the Lushun is visible both on the minimap and briefly on-screen, several islands away from that one. Also, the Lushun has deepwater torpedoes that can't hit destroyers. If I had to guess, I'd say those torps were from the Schlieffen that was dead-center of the screen where those torpedoes were launched from, and which the RPF indicator is pointing straight at. Also, Lushun doesn't get smoke, and we *just* saw the friendly C. Columbo laying that before he went down. One minute later - "And let's not forget the Schlieffen has torpedoes of its own!" Never change, Jingles.

When I was in the Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg, we trained air navigators, we were transitioning from C-130s to CT142 (Dash 8). The Herc had a RDF called the ARN-6, in service BEFORE WWII. The CT142 had a plasma display that reproduced the control box for the ARN-6 and other items, I thought it silly to use current tech to show something granddad would have used.

That Napoli kill ... he DIDN'T sail in a straight line, look at the dead ship on the mini-map at 7:12. Looks like it was the torps launched short of the predictor at 6:43 that did it.

I would've been that one weird kid that *did* know how to use the Huff-Duff. I've always been that guy who's fascinated by obsolete equipment and figures out how it works on my own time. I was a third class aviation fire control technician in the USN back when Jingles was a radioman in the RN. Now it's 2023 and I'm a "lead avionics technician" in an EMI lab for a major defense contractor. I collect old obsolete stuff like a hoarder, restore it to operation, and figure out how to use it as a hobby. I would've killed to have access to a genuine WWII HF-DF set. /wanna see my slide rule collection? 😆

I remember one time I had a light cruiser and a DD crash broadside into eachother, like Azimuth and the Zao did, when I was playing my Missouri. I had AP loaded and thought might as well thinking over penns are better than nothing. To my surprise after firing, I watched as 3 shells hit the DD and over penn for 10% damage but right after, punch into the light cruiser for penning damage. So credit where credit is due, the armour penn modeling WoWs uses takes into account that DDs can act as additional armour for larger ships and help arm BB AP fuses for a better chance at a penning hit.

It's amazing the kit that stays aboard when it isn't even functional anymore. I toured a "cruiser" that still had most of the electronics for an ASROC launcher, even though the actual launcher had been removed (and the ASROC's themselves were no longer in inventory), the electronics were still there. Taking up space and doing nothing. Same with the sonar set, according to the crew, that hadn't been operational since the sonar dome had been ripped off by a submerged log off of Norway years earlier.

In Canada, as a private or commercial pilot, you get training in the use of "DF Steer" radio in 2 ways: One is in using an RF beacon signal from an airport outer marker signal or a radio station antenna to get a bearing to fly to that location on your map as part of flying a course or approach using a needle that points to the signal source you've dialed in, and it will swing quickly as you pass overtop of the NDB antenna, and the other is in requesting a DF Steer from an airport to practice when you're flying in poor inclement weather, or pretending to be lost. You call up the tower and ask for a DF Steer. They'll ask you to key and hold your mike button for 5 seconds while they grab a bearing on your aircraft, then they'll tell you a course to steer that will b ring you ditectly over the tower so you can start your visual apporach and turn your downwind and base legs to land, ot to continue on your previous course. It was always fun. The tower guys like doing it, too, because it gives them a chance to practice it as well, and they don't get many requests for " old school" methods which can become very handy in unusual emergency situations.

I did radio intercept/direction finding for the US Army in the early 90s - was not too far away from you in Saudi Arabia/Iraq/Kuwait! Direction finding is simple when you have one station. It's just a single Line of Bearing (LoB) to whatever or whoever is transmitting. The trick is to get 2 or more stations simultaneously generating LoBs to the same transmitter, which can then give you a "fix" where they cross. The theory is simple, but in practice the trick is to make sure all your DF stations are tracking the same transmitter, plus accounting for signal degredation or scatter. Scatter is really ad for HF, since it bounces all over the atmosphere (which is how ham radio operators can talk to people all over the world). We could usually get good VHF fixes on Iraqis within about 20-30km of the front. More than a couple of those got passed off to arty or air assets and hit.

Seems like Jingles videos are the place to go to see ships sail in a straight line while torps are en-route. In my world, the BB was going to sail in a straight line, right up until halfway through the run the CV makes a run at him and sends him in a different direction. Also, Jingles said "the RPF points *directly* at the nearest ship". Sorry Jingles, but actually... It points towards a 30 degree sector in which the enemy ship is. (Don't quote me on the 30 degree thing, but it's near to that). That island happened to be big enough where there was more than one sector involved.

"Detected" is warning you get when you've been detected by Radar, Hydro or have been seen. "Located" is warning you see on screen when your general location is known by RPF detection. Lushun still had his hydro running, he would have known those torps were in the water early on, maybe he was hoping to gun down the very low health Shimmy before taking one. Not necessarily a bad gamble.

I thought your RNZN Coms officer might just be stuck in the past. Turns out RNZN operated Leander T12I until at least 1997 when they commissioned their first ANZAC Class.

The Mino was kiting away from the Napoli so couldn't get all the guns on target. The Mino has tissue paper for armor. It only takes a couple good hit to reduce the Mino to nothing.

Old Man, you mentioned the Lushun's torps being dodged at the end...Lushun has deep water torps....can't hurt a DD...and he didn't try and fire them. But he was dumb to come around that corner.

I 'think' (though it being Jingles you can never be 100% sure! lol) he meant that the Lushun had dodged the Shimakazes torps - because he had his hydro running. Azimuth had fired a spread of 5 to the left of the island during the gunfight he was losing.

How did Lushun run into those Shima torps while having hydro active? This match looks like it belongs in the Game of Throws series.

Mind, HFDF was not so much obsolete as a low-power back-up RDF system in case of seriously electrical power problems. In times before GPS satellites became mainstream, RDF navigation was particularly important. HFDF sets like that on HMS Brazen use up notably less juice than the systems the EW section have, allowing you to maintain basic RDF capability for longer without tapping main power. Thus, so if you are running electrics off emergency batteries for whatever reasons, using the HFDF to track the lighthouse beacon, as ordered by the Rottweiler, is not nearly so obtuse a command as it might seem. It also is not so obtuse to have redundancy in capability. Supposing the EW section was trashed, including the EW personnel, it would be helpful if there was least a couple of people in other sections who could perform basic RDF, especially if all they had to do was be able to find major navigational beacons.
