I would love to see the same experiment repeated after you run the mylar through a paper shredder. I think it would significantly improve the efficiency of the amount of silver you would recover. I think the mylar laminated and prevented the acid from penetrating the surface of every sample.
@BohumilGraman3 жыл бұрын
I tried and the result was the same. In my opinion, the best way is incineration and then chemistry. I'll try :)

Love the videos BG. Do a little bit of that myself when I have time. Just watched the video on the 400 mylars. When I get a big batch saved up I burn mine like IC chips. Burn them to an ash and then process the ashes. Being the price of Nitric acid is pretty high it saves me alot of money and I don't have as much waste solution to deal with. I also use a piece of copper to cement out the silver. Don't have the best luck with the lye and sugar method. Might even have a higher recovery rate too. Keep up the the good work.
@BohumilGraman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Incinerating will be my next way.
@mikethomas96233 жыл бұрын
So, roughly 17 cents per keyboard (that is before you take out the costs of chemicals and time) Is it worth it?
@BohumilGraman3 жыл бұрын
Definitely not in this amount and in this way. But this video was not meant to show how to make millions, but to show the amount of silver in keyboards. Personally, I think the right path is in pyrolysis or incineration.

If you decide to repeat this in the future, I would recommend a shredder to reduce the size of each piece of mylar. When it comes to dissolving the silver from the mylar, it should reduce the amount of Nitric acid you have to use. If you have a hot plate and like a ceramic dish to use as an overflow, you simply boil off the silver sulfide, to convert to an oxide... heat is just easy, and I'm lazy. Otherwise, perfect example of the process.
@BohumilGraman3 жыл бұрын
Shredder - I tried several types and none of them worked. Do you have any recommendations?
@Navschannel39083 жыл бұрын
@@BohumilGraman I use this one... I found a link on amazon... not recommending amazon, but it's a good heavy duty cross cut shredder, and it's made to shred cd's and dvd's... so it has the horsepower to handle the mylar. www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-12-Sheet-High-Security-Micro-Cut-Shredder/dp/B07PGMMNC6/ref=pd_lpo_229_t_0/136-5889419-9009344?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07PGMMNC6&pd_rd_r=31f0e6c3-4710-43ec-be02-0fa7022e94e1&pd_rd_w=hPv5q&pd_rd_wg=4SkJz&pf_rd_p=16b28406-aa34-451d-8a2e-b3930ada000c&pf_rd_r=TPZ4C6THMN11FJSNAYT7&psc=1&refRID=TPZ4C6THMN11FJSNAYT7

I've done a huge number of keyboards and find that a good average is 200mg per keyboard (100mg per sheet). I like to cut them into thirds and then run them through a paper shredder. Makes the nitric soak and following rinses much easier and the volume of liquid much lower. But unless you're doing very large runs (100+ keyboards) at a time I find the time spent isn't worth the amount of silver recovered and you're better off selling on ebay (or similar). Tearing the keyboards apart is also very labour intensive and time consuming so that needs to be factored in. Instead of patiently unscrewing them and taking them apart piece by piece I have found it is much quicker, and far more satisfying, to just smash the living h*ll out of them and the just ripping the sheets out of them. I figured that if I am going to cut them up anyway there is little point in being gentle. :)

In your opinion, do you think it would be a good idea to run the mylars through a shredder and have the mixing and the Nitric solution? I was wondering if there was any remaining silver remaining on the mylar?
