One of the most heartwrenching and passionate pieces of music i've ever heard. I stumbled on this when i began to learn viola, being a fan of Martinu already, and it overwhelmed me. I've listened to this recording countless times and shed a tear or two over it. I also prefer this recording to the one of Martinson. Call it first contact bias, but the intensity of this performance in its slower tempo is unbelievable, as the beauty of this piece :')

Clearly the best recording of this fantastic sonata, in my opinion. Spirited, strongly articulated, great tone, just phenomenal. I wouldn't love this piece so much if i hadn't heard it this way. My favourite viola sonata by far. Other performers (not to call names) don't get Martinu and the folkloristic spirit here, their tone wavers in Martinu's jumpy phrases as if they weren't significant (e.g. start of second movement), they impose a standard romantic phrasing on Martinu's idiosynchratic expression. Same applies to pianists (here the interpretation is crisp and equally spirited). Only Fuchs comes close, but the live recording is flawed, the second movement starts too fast, pianist in jeopardy, etc. I return to this recording again and again, thank you for letting this music shine!

Thank you very much for your recognition. Interpretation of this piece of work has been a great deal with the pianist. I have a very intimate relationship with this song. Pavel Vítek

Pavel & Jiri - you've done a fantastic job showcasing this still little heard viola sonata. Is this the 1955? There are quite a few listing of this on KZbin - w/o more details other than the playing time of 15-16 minutes I'm assuming it's the same piece. I'm researching now so I get get an accurate list of viola pcs by this prolific composer. Thanks and regards Douglas Violist

dgunde13 Martinu only wrote this one (amazing) viola sonata, didn't he?

I weep daily for the Viola sonatas and concertos not written, dead before birth, orphaned, or sacrificed to the greedy, popular god of the violin.

This is a great sonata. Martinu gets rid of the romantic vision of the viola to consider it more objectively as a ùmadium range string insstrument, writing the piano part to deal with htis specific range, and d giving the viola melodic parts in the language of his own.
