Priced at just £89.99 this new completely wire-free outdoor security camera from BOIFUN makes me look again at my expensive ARLO setup. At less than half the price of the standard ARLO cameras is this budget alternative really worth getting?
In the fairly standard box, far less lavishly packaged than the ARLO, can be found the camera itself, wall mount with fitting kit and a well written and nicely printed multi-language user guide. Build quality all seems excellent although lacking the premium feel of the dearer rival. That said, it all looks good to me with nothing looking likely to fail, break or fall off any time soon.
The camera is larger than any of the standard ARLO models but offers a battery life of up to six months, far better than I am getting from any of my 5 ARLO cameras. The camera can be charged from any USB port but there is no option for the solar charging that some ARLO models have. The camera houses an internal micro SD card rather than in the hub required by most of the ARLO range with the option to save to the cloud also. This camera works perfectly well without the cloud, which is a big improvement on the ARLO range which are severely hobbled when used without their costly cloud service. Incidentally, my camera did not have an SD card prefitted or included in the box, so remember to open the grommet flap to check before mounting the camera. Inside the easy access flap as well as the SD card slot there are also power and reset buttons, large and easy enough to access without needing to remove the camera from the wall mount.
Setup was quick and easy and worked the first time using the excellent CloudEdge smartphone app. As well as getting the camera online the app offers a wide range of controls for the camera including live streaming and the and management of its recordings.
So what is the image and sound quality like? Well, this camera manages 1080p at a rather sedate frame rate of around 20 fps, a far cry from the 4K quality of many of the dearer rivals., although the audio quality is rather better. That said the video is perfectly fine for normal security and home management purposes. As well as that all the functions you might expect to find are here: motion detection, human detection, scheduling, night vision, 2-way audio etc, All work seamlessly and well in the excellent app.
If you need a completely wire-free outdoor security system but don't want to pay a fortune for it, then consider this budget alternative.
