Nice checklist, great advice! We love our ReoLink (Trackmix model) and doorbell cameras, so I'm happy to see them featured. A few additional tips on them: - NVR not needed as long as it's wired or wi-fi is close by. Each camera has it's own web server & notification center. - Has some great auto-tracking features. Returning to home-spot, virtual tracking option. - Dual cameras. The 2nd is physically 6x zoomed on same subject; even better than an 8K would be! - Built-in PC app that integrates all cameras to a single monitoring screen with robust playback capabilities. - Great build quality! - Con: The auto-activation sometimes misses human activation when not front-n-center, even at max sensitivity. All other pluses are irrelevant if it didn't take the shot. So I'd agree; not a "pro", but close.

All EXCELLENT tips and to the point! I love it when someone gets straight to the point. I've been using Reolink cameras for a number of years. Bought the cheapest one for hobby purposes and ended up with several better models and a total of 12 now. I'm a serious believer of wired and/or POE system. WiFi tends to be sketchy depending on your area (environment). Reolink has fairly decent cameras and they're reliable but their home apps lack a lot of improvement...

8 years ago I bought a couple of cameras from chinia for $25 each. They still work and the video quality is pretty good and they have night vision with infrared light (and that also still works). They are "only" 1080P but very good quality.. Tried a more expensive one last years but the quality wasn't that good as my old cheap ones (it supposed to be 2K but it's crap)..But now it's time to get some new ones, new ones with pan/tilt and with follow.

Thanks for another great video. It helps a lot. I’ve been going through a rabit hole trying to find the best security system for my needs. There’s maybe something else that I would add to the list: NVR security. I’ve read that isolating your NVR from the internet with firewall rules is really important to prevent hackers from getting inside your network. What are your thoughts about that? And are you doing something else to protect your system and network when installing these devices? Thanks again!

NVR security is very important. Nowadays there are a lot more options to maintain your camera system privacy. Alibi for example uses a Peer to Peer connection. So instead of your router & port forwarding like the old days (which is the least secure), your system is being hosted on a secure server with end to end encryption. The sole purpose of that method is to maintain your privacy.

This is another example of “you get what you pay for”. If you go for the cheaper entry level “big box” systems, your privacy is more at risk, because those companies barely have privacy on their road map. Yet another reason to always go professional grade.

G'day. I have 15 Reolink cameras installed at the moment. All fixed 5MP except for an 823A and 1 Duo2. 2 ofthe 5MP cameras have better image detail than standard 8MP as they have optical zoom (at full zoom). The PTZ is usually aimed at an intersection to capture everyone in the area. It is also great for watching things as they happen without having to go outside. I run floodlights facing the road every night (corner block) allowing most the cameras to remain in colour.

Even at 100+ meters the police love that they canthack where people go as well as prove when they come close and can then be Identified.

About a month after moving in Vivint sales people showed up in my door and convinced me to switch to Vivint, I have regretted that decision ever since! I have finally paid off the lease on the equipment and now I’m just paying the monthly service fee. My system includes two doorbell, cameras, two exterior cameras, thermostat control, glass, brake detector and a keypad and two smart door locks. I want to replace all of that. Man I'm struggling still in what to choose, great video, enlightening. Didn't think about that ptz being bamboozled by multiple targets. I an prettyv set on unify doorbell camera, but it's the additional ones i haven't decided. I'm going to assume this alibi is out of my budget. Been considering the reolink duo for the back , as my place has one of those alleys to the back and walking path on the side. Thank-you for this great straight forward video lesson. I live in an apartment in a high crime part of town. I want to put up a security camera that covers my front door and one that covers the parking lot out back. Owner of property won't allow us to mount on outside of building. Other tenants in the building do have outdoor security cameras mounted indoors. They do work. Based on your video I think a 2 camera WiFi system would be a good match for me. I also think I would go with the PTZ type because the main thing we are tracking in the parking lot is people prowling the cars. So motion activated with a wide pan angle and color night vision. Unfortunately, you’re going to have trouble with the tracking features of a PTZ through glass. You’re also going to have issues with color night vision because of the reflection on the glass. So your best bet is a straightforward camera & turn the night vision off.

I’ve been doing this for over 20 years & have installed NVRs for thousands of people & I’ve never had one stolen…BUT, if you’re really worried about, install the NVR somewhere a thief wouldn’t look. Like a laundry room, or a closet that has power (or add power to a closet). There are plenty of places you can install one if you get creative.

Some things I considered that wern't on the list 1) Camera frame rate for day and night, Lens effective aperture, how compressed is the image (4k WiFI for example), and total cost to get all the services I wanted. Manufacturers like to bury costs in fine print.

First video of yours, you seem like a good dude. I’m trying to figure out a solution for my elderly parents who split time in the north and down in Florida. I have a eufy doorbell cam down there and they are able to watch and like it, but the app seems clunky. The northern house needs a multi-camera setup and it’s overwhelming. I run a homelab server and am a developer, but I really hate doing tech support for family. I really would love to have everything in one app so those solar eufy cameras might be the way to go. I've studied this for many days trying to decide what is best for me. Everything I learned is explained in your video. Great job. I wanted something easy for my parents to be able to view, they aren't so great with phone apps and stuff. I installed a Tapo camera because the app is about as simple as it gets. I'll install another camera and perhaps one indoors. I guess the only thing not mentioned in this video is some cameras can back-up the video on a memory card and or cloud storage. Or someTapo cameras use a hub that you can put a memory card in. Tapo also gives you a free 30 day cloud storage for every camera that you buy. And perhaps another topic is some cameras have AI features, such as people detection, animal detection, and others.

Yup. I’ve had WiFi cams for over a year and I have them running 24/7. Have to change the battery every 4 months. It’s a pain in the ass especially since I many to change. Also my neighbors house was robbed while they were out of town because we had a power outage for 2 days . Looks like I’ll be going with Poe nvr

It’s not ideal, especially at night. It depends on the camera, but a lot of them have night vision LEDs that will reflect off the window and you won’t see anything at night.

Good video, thanks for posting. The IR on my Night Owl 1080p Wi-Fi cam lights up reflective street signs at well over 150'. Not saying they're the greatest but they're not cheap junk either. Calling them drug dealer cameras isn't very nice, some people have to use what they can afford. Night Owl is also NDAA & FCC compliant, most consumer level systems aren't.

I know this is not necessarily related but have you ever looked at trail cams and things that the only reason I say that is cuz I have a larger property and I'd kind of like to get something like that to fine for trespassers but there are so many out there and I just don't know which ones to look for

Poor (cheap) build quality, bad night vision, less quality features (like no Wide Dynamic Range or 3D Noise Reduction), no tech/warranty support, won’t hold up to the weather, easily vandalized…I could go on & on.

Also i want to put 5-7 cameras outside operating 24/7, and 1 camera inside but manually turn on/off when we go out, is there way to do it in the app? or do i have to manually unplug the cable? Wired, stored on hard drive at home (no cloud).

Started with IQ CCTV (720p) then upgraded to Swann (1080p) then I got a Hikvision but still use the swann cameras as they are 1080p, I think of switching to Riolink 4K IP Cameras
