I've always found it kinda curious how this movie has a soundtrack full of rap/hip-hop songs, the dialogue is peppered with urban slang, and one of the first lines of dialogue begins with "The Notorious B.I.G. said it best..." ...yet apart from the receptionist/secretary that happens to be the main protagonists' love interest, this entire movie seems to take place in a universe where black people don't exist, populated by guys who don't seem to think all that highly of black people, or at least not constrained by political correctness (re: Richie telling Chris "Whatever...just gimme 10 to 1 in that skinny little ni^^er!!"). Then again, they also seem to be living in a world that seems less like America circa 2000, and more like a David Mamet play, in a time when white people were Jews, Italians, Poles, Irish, and Slavs, instead of lumped into one big demographic called "white people." Overall, it makes little sense...but it's long been a pet favorite of mine, a real guilty pleasure. The late '90s/early 2000s were a time I remember fondly. I got into the IT biz, I was starting to actually build something I could call a "career," and was even making a few bucks. The "Dot-Com Boom" created an economy that was all big tits and swinging dicks, VC's were throwing wads of money at everyone with a website, business in some regions-- like Northern Virginia/DC, where I was living-- was blowing up, and people were becoming paper millionaires by joining Internet start-ups and taking smaller salaries with pre-IPO stock options founded and run by 20-something CEOs who were supposed to become the newest class of American business tycoons. A lot of the spirit of that time was captured in this movie; up to and including masses of people suddenly thinking that were savvy investors and stock market experts. The possibilities seemed endless...and then it all suddenly fell on its' ass, as such markets invariably do, though nobody wants to think so.
