In this week's episode we look at how we use the steam from the boiler and answer a few important questions; what happens if the boiler pressure gets too high? Is too much water a bad thing? What happens if you run out of water?

Loving the series, so thought I might throw a suggestion into the mix. You've gone through all the locos that ran on the line during its operating life, but how about a video briefly going over the residents that have made the line their home over the years. There have been loads of interesting locos in the past, such as multiple Austerity 2-10-0s to an A4 to a mogul dressed as James and it would be great to see everything summed up briefly in one video. Once again, great video as always.

The regulator as device does not lift the water level. It is the high rate of steam production creating tiny steam bubbles along the heating surfaces and displacing some of the water in the boiler and raising the level.

Sorry, but I was taught that if you can't see the water level, do not add water to the boiler. If the plate is overheated, cold water could cause it to fracture (boiler explodes). If your fusible plug "drops" and you cannot see the water, drop the fire and get rid of the pressure. Do not add water! Yes it is possible for the plug to drop even when there is plenty of water in the boiler, and if you can see the water, then it would be safe to add to reduce boiler pressure. Part of the pre fire lighting check is to visually check the fusible plugs. In 35 years I have three times seen a faulty plug, only once on a railway engine and that was last year.

If your water level is low one would hope you would have both injectors on to fill the water. If the water level is out of sight and you want to check whether the level is above the crown, shut the steam way cock. If water is above the crown and above the water way passage it will rise to the top of the glass. Start both injectors. The best way to ensure there is sufficient water in the boiler assuming there are two operable injectors is to develop a good firing technique and the driver to have a good driving technique. Often the drivers side injector gets neglected.

will the Watercress line still have to pay Mattel the American toy company who now own the character rights for Thomas the tank engine despite not doing days out with Thomas events this year because i was a little bit worried about the water cress line during the lock down in England. i hope they have some good luck soon
