Off-topic, but your Light as Medicine case study video has been viewed recently by a good neighbour, who is now purchasing two near-IR lamps, one for them and one for a family member. The trigger for this was their elderly close relative having recently been hospitalised due to a respiratory illness, which then led to our discussion about the benefits of near-IR light. Oh no! Do your parents know how bad reverse osmosis is for their health? It pulls all the minerals from the body of whoever drinks it. Ever wonder why you can't use a stainless steel hose to run to your refrigerator if you have reverse osmosis? You must use platic tubing because the R.O. water will eat through metal. The water will take everything that was stripped from it by the osmosis procedure. This warning has been posted for many years, but people still ignore it and drink this "purified" water. 😬

Beware of unintended consequences - does boiling also dissolve some of the plasticizers and other processing chemicals that are part of plastics (added to facilitate the manufacturing process)? I understand the article was paywalled, but to your knowledge did the authors do a chemical analysis of the water chemistry after boiling?

Boiling it in the stainless steel pan is unlikely to increase chemicals
@jimcarroll8977
@jimcarroll8977 3 ай бұрын
@@Medcram Sorry, it's not the pan or boiling container I was referring to, but the plastics themselves which are in practice almost always mixtures of chemicals. For example a common disposable water battle is often made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) as the base plastic plus other chemicals. These other chemicals are often added to modify rheology or flow performance (for producing the bottle), improve oxidative performance, lubricate the production molds, or improve the temperature performance or impact resistance of the final product. It's these additives that I'm concerned about. Why? Well, the now well known endocrine disrupting phthalates, such as BPA, are added to plastics to toughen them. So back to my original question: does the process of boiling water with microplastics actually release some of these other chemicals. Just wondering if the study authors thought of this....

@ShayZ909 I'm saying that boiling it is essentially useless for getting rid of microplastics. But, the mechanism is: the minerals break apart in hard water when it's boiled. Then, when the water cools, the minerals stick back together, trapping some of the microplastics into the mix. The process is energy intensive and very ineffective. Just using a water filter does a much, much better job of getting rid of microplastics.

Boycot all kettkes that have plastic bodies, seals, filters or viweing windows. We empty all unused boiled water into a lage glass container with a stainless steel tap and glass lid for drinking water storage . It tastes better and no chlorine odor. Plus boiling the water reduced bological pathergens, but rememger to run down the water and empty it every 3-4weeks to get rid off the settled particles and clean the container before refilling with cooled boiled water. We have done this since the late 80's and noticed the incidents of frequent cold/flu like ailments ceased.

I don't think RO does it. I switched over to Culligan's years ago for drinking, cooking, washing vegetables in and brushing my teeth. Most systems, including Culligan's, which I have used for years, are using microfilters not nano. but Culligan uses plastic bottles anyway. Hard to find glass. Our city uses microfilters b/c we have cryptosporidium in our raw water source. I read somewhere that regular charcoal filters could capture nanoplastics but it didn't talk about the exact size. What do you do with the CaCO deposits... please don't say let them go down the drain. We need a muti-pronged attack and stop the use of plastics and stop sending them to the landfill. I'd be interested in finding out if burning them is safer than dumping them or would that be trading one problem for another.

He said filter it. The deposits will stick to the pan over a period of time and also sink to the bottom. A coffee filter might do it or a charcoal filter - AFTER the nanoplastics are tied up in the calcium carbonate or water deposits. You can see them, they'll make water cloudy if you swirl it. Vinegar dissolves it off of the sides of the pans but that suspends it in the water again.

There is indeed PFAS in tap water and it’s virtually impossible to test for them. While there are thousands of PFAS chemicals there are only tests for three of them. It now turns out they’re toxic from levels a thousand times lower than the minimum values of those measuring devices. And the other thousands of chemicals they can’t test for. It’s in everything: your tap water, your food (they use PFAS pesticides now - just unbelievable), your clothes, your detergent, your shampoo, your furniture. It’s even found in organic food and fish is one of the largest sources of PFAS. It is in everything and it kills and it gets lots of people terribly sick without them knowing it’s because of the PFAS.

@@Medcram, advocating reverse osmosis (RO) filtration could be a huge mistake. I’m sure you’ve heard of the recent Columbia University study on RO filtered bottled water. They found an average of 240,000 nanoplastic particles per liter of commercially filtered RO water, with the majority of the nanoplastics coming from the RO membrane itself! In my opinion, it was irresponsible for them to exclude home based RO filtered water from their study. Many people believe a home based RO system is the holy grail of filtration, but until this water is tested for nanoplastics, just like the commercial RO was, we simply don’t know.

So if we have hard enough water, and we boil it, let it precipitate and cool, then then filter it, we might reduce our microplastics from water by 80% - but the article doesn't suggest doing that for all of our drinking water. Is it suggesting that be done in water processing plants instead, then?

I'm wondering what the best way of filtering cooled, boiled water is. All studies on Brita (and all "Brita-like") water filters have shown way more bacteria contamination than straight tap water, and reverse osmosis filters remove all the essential minerals the body needs. Remineralising reverse osmosis filtered "water" (it's technically no longer _water_ after this process) isn't at all as efficient and doesn't dissolve as well as when it's added by the water authorities. I've been reading a lot of studies on this in scientific journals and also why minerals in water are important.

@@Medcram Filtration may remove PFAS from water, but does not destroy them. PFAS captured in filters reach an extremely toxic concentration and therefore become a biohazard. The good news is that systems (in the R&D phase) are being developed that will permanently destroy PFAS. The first of these systems will be for industrial, not household, use. I work in this R&D field and don't forsee household systems. The industrial systems will be very expensive to manufacture, but still economical for large waste producers.

Our boss works part time at another water plant, everything they do we do.....they went away from alum and lime to a polymer, but it wasn't until another plant did the same thing that we switched........since you can't find tune a polymer you always end up overfeeding and of course this clogs up filters Then they went to putting a polymer in at the entry point, past the filters, for the purpose of coating the lines to help prevent breaks.......so we added this process too It's been years but the line breaks are becoming rare, so that works, the customer has to filter that out.......if they know about it.......the plummers know about it A full house filter is not necessary, and is costly because it will get clogged quickly.......a filter on lines going to drinking water will last much longer than filtering all water We use to use faucet filter but it clogged pretty fast because we were filtering dishwater......we switched to a pitcher filter and get all our drinking\cooking water from the pitcher If your water doesn't have little critters living in it, and it probably doesn't, boiling will also remove any free CL2, so storage of the water shouldn't be very long If your water does have little critters, boiling will kill them, but it will leave the water vulnerable to attack by germs......so you will need to drink the water fairly fast and clean your storage container often

Maybe I don't understand it fully, but... how can you possibly remove anything by boiling? Don't we have to look at the law of conservation? We don't destroy matter when we boil. It's still in the solution. It may be sitting at the bottom, but it can still be floating around and consumed. I am thinking the only way that we can remove anything from water is through filtration. And that's not truly removing; we're just separating particles and drinking water without the contaminants.
