That last few minutes: Yeah, this is what everyone who has a parent with Alzheimer's goes through at some point (which I personally went through with my mother up until December when she passed). This episode is my favorite of the series for a bunch of reasons: - the capability of the writers to take Beatrice, a character until now we’ve come to universally hate, and not only humanize her but make her descent understandable - highlighting the cycle of abuse, which if anything can be seen as a thesis to BoJack as a show. Beatrice, it turns out, is both a victim and a perpetrator just as much as BoJack is; our innate good nature can be corrupted by dark forces in the world and we could end up pushing that darkness on others. It’s our struggle in life to break this cycle as best we can. We see that Beatrice failed at that, and BoJack’s continual struggle with it is the core of the show. - the show’s brilliant use of visual cues as a way to illustrate Beatrice’s mental decline - the entire emotional ordeal of that last two minutes. Was Beatrice lying? Was BoJack? Did they both put aside their sordid history, all the bad blood on their shoulders, to be kind to one another? A perfect climax to the build-up of how damaged they are, and one of the only two moments I’d personally cried watching the show. We’ve still got a lot of great stuff to look forward to, but to me this is the pinnacle.
@phousefilms3 жыл бұрын
Bojack put aside his anger towards her in that moment, when he had always wanted to tell her off when she remembered him. Beatrice lied as well, as she had never tasted ice cream before because of her parents, which is why she hesitates before she says its "delicious".
@artistfloor93 жыл бұрын
Beatrice had mixed motivations for taking Hollyhock away from Henrietta. On one hand, she was empathetic. She seemed genuine when she said she didn't want Henrietta to make the same mistake she made. She wanted Henrietta to achieve her goals and not spend the rest of her life resenting her own child. On the other hand, she was cruel. She took Hollyhock away the same way her father took her doll away, almost as a form of punishment. She told Henrietta it was wrong to get attached. Love does terrible things to a person, after all. Was it ultimately for the best? Who can really say.

Just a thought rant. I do think people that watch reactions to series' tend to be lonely people. For the most part, people who watch reactions, have already seen what the people are reacting to. They come for the sense of being in a group or being around friends, for the reactor's personalities and to hear their thoughts on it. I think a lot of people are attracted to your girls' channel because there's so much good energy in your videos. It's the kind of charisma that draws people in. I'm probably not the only person who has been in a dark situation, and the only thing that kept me going to the next day, or the next week was seeing the next episode to something. Not to pressure anyone, but I think that's definitely happened for some people, and they kept going for "one more week" until they finally found their footing again. When I first started college in a different city, away from all my friends and I didn't know anyone, reaction videos undoubtedly made me feel less alone. Anyway, great reaction! I'm looking forward to the next one, and the finale in particular. Even now I feel like the creator of Bojack is one of the few people that truly understands depression.

There are things I love, I wish I was able to experience them for the first time again, but that's not possible. Watching people go through what I did is a form for me to capture that feeling once again through their eyes. It's that feeling of discovering something new that's so incredible and fascinating. We tend to experience this feeling quite often, but we have to remember that there will always be a chance to get surprised by something and experience it for the first time.
@Nr47473 жыл бұрын
I definitely think that loneliness can be a reason to enjoy reaction videos, but I don't think it has to. I'm not a very lonely person but I still get curious what other people might think about certain media I enjoy, especially if my friends, family and girlfriend don't share those interests. Yes, it somewhat substitutes discussions about that media with friends etc., but not neccessarily because of loneliness but simply because of differing personal interests.

There's a lot to unpack from this episode. Bojack's mom recognizes Hollyhock, but thinks Bojack is Henrietta - Hollyhock's mom. She freaked out when Bojack threw her baby out the window. We think it's just random but she's reliving that past drama. Bojack wanted to wait for his mom to recognize him, so he could tell her off. Instead, he comforts her. He tells her she's having ice cream and she says it's delicious. Easy for us to think she's reliving a memory, but she never got to have ice cream. She was told to put some sugar on a lemon. She's imagining an experience she never got to have.

She never had icecream (that's not a healthy girl's snack afterall!); just that one popsicle on that after-the-war party where her mother went kinda crazy... When BoJack tells her they are having "vanilla Icecream", you can see "something" in Beatrice's eyes... she breaks a little out of the illusion and takes a while to answer trying to describe its flavor... because she doesn't know it. Also, not show in this KZbin video, when we see what's inside BoJack's fridge on this memory-thing from Beatrice, we just see sugar and lemons... probably because the fridge was full of sweet and yummy stuff and "some sugar on top of a lemon" was as sweet as Beatrice ever knew... :-s

My mom passed away two years back and this episode really hit me. She didn’t have dementia etc…but was in and out of hospital multiple times a year a for lung problems. A year before she passed we were told multiple times she was close to death and she was on so many meds and her brain was oxygen deprived that she fell into these delusions. My family saw most of it but I’ll never forget the day I visited her and she thought I was my brother and asked why did I break the vase (my brother broke a vase at a house party about 20 years back and there was some drama surrounding that). It destroyed me for a bit it was like she had forgotten who I was and she couldn’t recognise me as who I am. I’m so glad that she recovered that time and we got to spend more time with her as her usual self before she finally passed. I have so much sympathy for those who have lost a loved one and have gone through this for an extended period of time. It just has me so worried for the future that more than likely I’ll also have to experience this. I wish the world wasn’t as divided as it is, every single one of us are hurting and dealing with very tough situations and I don’t think we pay enough attention to the pain of others and we definitely don’t cherish people enough when they’re still here. You really don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

It doesn't excuse the bad things she's done, much like how Bojack's traumas don't excuse some of the terrible things he's done, but I like that we get to truly see her and understand her. This episode also made me think about how me and siblings were raised, how our parents and other family members were raised as well and how their traumas were passed down from generation to generation. And like you guys said, we're all victims and we're trying to do the best we can with what we got, or what we're willing to take. This episode hurt the most for me. My dad went through pretty severe dementia near the end of his life and this episode portrayed it so accurately. It was heartbreaking to watch the first time around. That last scene, when they were talking about the ice cream, was too real. We would tell my Dad similar things about where he was and wasn't at when he got confused. He wouldn't necessarily believe us, but he couldn't imagine an alternative either. It was just a reluctant acceptance of a reality that he wasn't able to interpret or see. Thanks for reacting to this, it hurts, but it's also one of my favorite episodes.

I grew up in a Mexican...very traditional family. They didn't understand mental health. And the eldest of my generation fell prey to their ignorance to where its destroyed his life and has gone to affect his kids through way if his drug abuse. And my younger cousin fell prey to the same things with his bi polar and adhd that made success in school hard undiagnosed and through drug abuse he's going going same way. And it makes me realize that without knowing I was very close to falling down the same road. But I managed my way out. But I was very close to not. But it helps when you see it from the outside. Even on you. And realizing it and doing the best you can to not carry it forewad. Like with crying. I try to teach my son not to cry out of whining or disappointment in certain nonsense things. But I try to never discourage him from crying when he's sad or upset. Or angry. Or...he's four so it hasn't happened yet...but out of happiness. I want him to be able to express himself in a way that I was discouraged from and caused a lot of pain growing up (also LSD is beautiful and has helped reflect as our hosts have pointed to)

Crazy how at the first sign of simple genuine acknowledgement Bojack just stops in his tracks, sees her for how she really is - old and vulnerable - and shows kindness her. As far as my interpretation of the events from Bea's perspective goes, I think one moment she's in the present, another she's in the past, and sometimes she's in between. Not a loop. Alzheimers sucks.

One of the most heartbreaking things about the last scene is that BoJack DOES NOT forgive Beatrice - he still resents her with every fiber of his being, he doesn’t understand her childhood trauma, he doesn’t know what she’s suffering in her dementia - but for maybe the first time in the show, he does a kindness for kindness’s sake.

I'm as damaged as Bojack, brought up in a bad family. And unfortunately, just like Bojack's mother, my mother is damaged. I can't be mad at her because she has no one to support her, to listen to her. So who is to blame for me being like this? I do not know. It's hard to find the culprit. We pay the price for the damage of the previous generation. Thats all. We want our families to be good people. This is the most natural impulse. But when you learn that they are not a mother and father, but a simple person, it is easier to continue on the road with the damage you have taken. This show taught me that. In the end we all messed up. I love u girls. This video is a pure emotion.

Joseph Sugarman was truly a monster.

I mean, the point of the episode is kind of that no one is a monster?
@MegaGamer10063 жыл бұрын
@@foamingclean596 nope. Joseph Sugarman is a monster. He is a product of the generation he was raised in (as is Beatrice and BoJack) but his actions and his words caused unspeakable damage on his family, his children and even his grandchildren. He is arguably the most horrible character in the show.
@TheJokerAkaCirque3 жыл бұрын
@@MegaGamer1006 i agree but to play devil's advocate: Beatrice appears a monster until you know what it was like growing up under Joseph and her other life influences that made her the way she is. Who's to say there wasn't someone else whose horrible actions shaped Joseph? Buuut it's also possible that the rot just started with him.
@cynic19843 жыл бұрын
None, just like how Bojack is a monster for what he put others through. They are all victims and they are all monsters........ this show is depressing.
@artistfloor93 жыл бұрын
@@TheJokerAkaCirque Exactly. Every monster has a backstory. It doesn't excuse their actions, but it does explain why they are the way they are. We are all product of our environment. It's very rare for someone to just be "born bad." We can sympathize with what Beatrice has been through while still condemning her for being a horribly abusive mother. The same can be applied to Bojack, and it could also probably be applied to his father and grandfather if we got to see their backstories.

I'm willing to bet that many of the awful things that Beatrice's dad said and believed in were things that were taught to him by his own parents. The show is a perfect picture of generational trauma and how it ripples through the family lines. It doesn't excuse any of the awful things that anyone does, but it highlights the fact that we have to be cognizant of the fucked up things we've picked up from our parents and try to break those cycles.

Superb episode in so many ways. Calls back to an earlier episode where bojack says to Hollyhock he's waiting for an opportunity, when his mother recognises who he is, to tell her " F&@k you mum!!" And at the end of this episode, here is his opportunity And he can't do it. Instead, he paints a nice picture for her. Bojack has done some awful stuff, but he's not some heartless monster. We know he has the capacity to be a better person
@jakehasaproblem Жыл бұрын
what really gets me about the ending is that while we saw Beatrice's life essentially flash before her eyes, Bojack does this right after learning about what happened with Hollyhock. the amount of restraint he shows here, a place where he's away from cameras where he can say whatever he wants to her, but doesnt

Please forgive me if this sounds repetitive (if someone has already said this in the comments), but I would like to say thank you! Thank you both for being as transparent as you both were and sharing each of your experiences growing up in youth and now as adults. Thank you both for creating this space where we aren't ridiculed for having or experiencing trauma and seeing it as that rather than push it away or sweep it under a rug. Thank you both!!! You both didn't have to share this with us (and please remember that by all means share whatever you both feel comfortable with sharing regardless of what anyone else says), but y'all did. Y'all became vulnerable with us and in return I became vulnerable with/to myself. Thank you beautiful ladies, and please take care of yourselves. Whether that be time away from KZbin, meditation, whatever is healthy for you both. Much Love!

So this episode is meant to be more of a visualization of Alzheimer’s and Dimensia. For example my Great Grandma often thinks she’s like 16 but decades also somewhat blur. It’s because while often short term memory loss is noticeable, the confusion is because as more recent memories get muddled and eventually forgotten, the person tends to think based on what they do remember is that they are in that time period of their life. So on the drive to the Nursing Home she’s slipping between points of time, that’s why she was confusing Bojack for Henrietta. In those points of her life, it made more sense for Henrietta to be there, which is also part of why again back to my Great Grandma, she would confuse my Grandma for her sister. People and your sense of time are displaced and muddled all together and why it can be distressing when at the same they can’t hold onto the current memory of now current things become confusing and scary. It’s not impossible to explain in the earlier stages, because that’s still a thinking functioning person, but it gets harder as the disease progresses. Timelines and your sense in time get all switched around, things are remembered somewhat off or this one thing that happened 20 years ago seems to be right next to or bleeding into what also happened 40 years ago. If this sounds confusing aside from me sucking at explaining it’s because confusion and loss off so much as you try to make sense of what you’re still able to remember is the jist of Alzheimer’s. It’s scary and sad,but with proper care can be managed and help them feel like frightened by their current reality, and what is happening to them. Now with Beatrice she had an entire life of trauma and pain so while she had her way of coping when her mind was there (even though by her actions wasn’t good coping mechanism in any sense already), now that she’s jumping back and forth between these decades it’s all very much real again. It’s beyond already hard flashbacks trauma survivors face in that she to her sense of reality is actually living in these points. However Bojack taking a moment to give her a nice scene to remember, while she might never completely know is more powerful on both helping Beatrice feel less frightened and him not going for vengeance against her like he wanted.

Beatrice thinking that Bojack is Beatrice because hes with Hollyhock. Everything makes sense if you go back watching the previous episodes. What a fantastic show. And i know you know this, but dont feel bad for crying. This episode specifically brings a lot of people to tears. Edit: Just because i see a lot of hate for Joseph Sugarman (which is warranted ofc). A lot of people analyze correctly that Beatrice gives the wrong lessons and hate she learned to Bojack. They forget that Joseph also grew up in a society where he got taught to repress feelings and he most likely got taught that a womans worth is only physically. Hes a horrible person just like Beatrice and Bojack, but theres most likely a reason behind that.

The thing is though, Beatrice's terrible father and horrible upbringing and no good very bad husband don't excuse all the awful shit she did. I think a lot of people, when they watch this show, seem to want to side with one character or another - to puzzle out whose 'fault' everything can be traced back to and solve the show. Lots of people go to great lengths to try and excuse all the awful shit Bojack does, for example ('with his parents he never had a chance!' etc, which is true, but..), and after this episode many people do the same for Beatrice. I mean, the show's about a lot of things, but I think maybe the one biggest through-line is the idea that we are responsible for the things we do. A bad upbringing or bad family life can be the reason you do something, but not an excuse for it. Your choice is still the same every day - give in, and repeat the actions and cycles of behaviour that people have done to you to others/yourself, or acknowledge that even though those things happened you , it's your ability and responsibility to choose differently. Beatrice and Bojack both had no help at all in their upbringings, but they both still had the option of trying to be better, and by and large failed. Not that it's easy; I know I don't do it either. Hard disagree on your comment that no one's really alone, by the way. I don't see any real future where I'm not just alone. But I'm glad you guys are doing better than you were in the past.

If you do get around to rewatch the episode, do yourselves a favour and rewatch the entire season along with it. There's so much of a rewatch bonus in every scene with Bojack's mother. Everything she says will make so much more sense now that you know Hollyhock's backstory and that she and Beatrix go way back.

Funny thing about the painting Beatrice inherits from her dad and gives to BoJack: When Sarah Lynn was first introduced in season 1 and threw that party at BoJack’s place, someone drilled a hole through the wall and the blue horse’s head. It was foreshadowing Honey’s story. The blue to symbolizes her depression from the death of Crackerjack, and the drilling through the forehead is in the same spot as Honey’s lobotomy scar. Also, the way you guys pointed out how alike Honey and BoJack are-generational trauma being passed from what happened between Beatrice’s parents passed down to her passed down to BoJack, who has no hope of understanding the significance of any of it. The painting wasn’t literally of Honey, but it was symbolic of her story to come.

Another thing is that when Beatrice was talking hollyhock away from Henrietta, a part of her was putting Henrietta in the same situation of with how her baby doll was taken away as a child, and I think this was done subconsciously. I don’t think Beatrice was aware of what she was doing, like she herself didn’t even realize her intentions weren’t fully pure, I think a part of it was also that she didn’t want to suffer alone.
