Cool knives. I own a couple of Rough Rider knives and have been impressed with them, at least in the limited use to which I have put them so far. As to being 'less intimidating' than more 'tactical' folders I think you are correct. The funny thing is that these, particular type of slipjoints - the ones with straight-razor type blades - are very much 'one hand opening'. I graduated high school in 1989, just to put a time perspective on this - I don't remember seeing a whole lot of pocket clips, thumb studs or 'Spidey holes' on knives in common usage back then. I carried either a slipjoint or a 'traditional' style lockback pocket knife to school pretty much every day. The teachers knew that I (and others) carried pocket knives and it was never an issue. Female teachers would sometimes ask to borrow my (or another student's) pocket knife or ask one of us to perform a knife related task for her (not all the rooms had pencil sharpeners so, honestly, the task for which a pocket knife was most often used was to sharpen pencils - and teachers would often ask us to sharpen a pencil for her while we were standing at the waste basket sharpening ours.) Male teachers generally carried their own pocket knives. One of the male teachers had a metal hook as a prosthetic in place of one hand. He carried a pocket knife with a 'straight razor' blade because with his good hand he could take the knife from his pocket, hook the concave portion of the front of the blade on his belt loop and open the knife with ease. His was the first 'razor blade' knife I recall ever seeing and I remember being impressed that not only could he open the knife one-handed but could do so much more quickly than I could open my 'standard' type blades with the use of two hands. In fact, I would say that he opening it just about as quickly as most of us can open the aforementioned 'tactical' knives with one-handed opening as a design feature.

Hi, I have 4 rough riders now, and for the money they are very good, they are an affordable way to get into collecting traditional style pocket knives. Also, most of the range are legal in countries which have strict knife laws,!!

They are my favorite of all the budget brands for slipjoints!

Nice review. I have a couple of older 1095 Bokers on the way so this caught my eye.

I wonder if people shave with these? And, how they would compare to an actual straight razor blade to shave wth and hold its edge against. Curious. Generally though, I did try a few slip hints knives and had a Swayback Jack for a while, but lost it. I have about 5 slip joints in my collection, with some unique modified ones. But they don't really hold my interest like other knives. But I see the appeal.

I agree. The tree brand knives are nice for the money, and RR is hard to beat for price ( as far as traditional slipjoints are concerned ). Have you looked at any of the Colt / Schrade / Marbles slip joints ? Some of them are quite nice for the price as well.

I found a very nice 3-layer Marbles knife, it has clip, spey, and sheepfoot blades, will definitely show it coming up.

I would use the pen blade of a slipjoint if I am out in the streets to cut something if I need only a small blade cause there is less chance of scaring people. So those would make all the utility cuts of my current system in one package. Just by that I can tell that designs like these were used by people who really EDCed blades in past.

that "razor" design is actually old .. it goes back to right after the civil war. it was designed as a standard trapper but they grooved the tip of the spey blade like that so it could be opened one handed by guys that lost an arm .. it was called "one armed bandit" in the old days .. they r very awesome designs

WEJK, would these be good for skinning small game as well as basic camp chores like carving wood and food prep? If not, what would you recommend?
@WeAllJuggleKnives7 жыл бұрын
I think it would be handy for those tasks! I would also recommend Mora and Marttiini knives for those tasks, if you need something a little longer.
