Excerpt from *_The Men of Kiev_* by _Iam Donut_ "After nearly a year of war on the Eastern Front, the Germans looked farther from victory than when the war had started. Soviet Tank and infantry divisions had been able to hold the Axis from pushing too far into Soviet territory and had even started pushing German divisions back towards Berlin, though this defense cost millions of Red Army lives. However, in late 1944, everything would change as the Axis initiated _Operation Goldene Niederlage_ . This plan called for a counter-attack across the entire front supported by a large number of tank divisions, and an overwhelming amount of air support, suddenly under the command of competent generals. However, the plan hinged on a hard push in the south to completely demolish the Soviet Southern Army. As German, Italian, Romanian, Hungarian, and Bulgarian divisions started to suddenly attack the Soviet frontlines, Soviet units were quickly surrounded and destroyed as they became pinned down and unable to move or retreat from their positions due to the unending supply of bombs, rockets, and gunfire raining down from enemy CAS above. One particularly important encirclement early in the operation formed when Axis troops managed to trap thousands of Soviet troops inside the Khmelnytskyi Pocket. This pocket contained most of the remaining Soviet armored forces in the South and represented the beginnings of the near-collapse of the Southern Army as Axis forces continued to push on. Soon after the troops within the Khmelnytskyi Pocket either surrendered or died, Axis troops came within sight of the city of Kiev. Thousands of men on both sides of the war would fight in this Ukranian city, and many of these young men wouldn't see the end of the war. However, those who did would never forget the fortitude, courage, and bravery of the soldiers who fought there, and would never forget the utterly depraved, horrific, vile, and evil things they had to do to survive. From what I learned talking to the men who fought there, nobody ever really leaves Kiev, no matter how far they try to get."

The legendary siege of Kiev ended little before a full year but their resistance similar to the Polish Warsaw uprising is what gave the soviets hope to push through and defeat the axis threat once and for all EDIT: I made a standalone version of this story so go check it out further in the comments section. *A little Sneak peek at The Siege of Kiev - A story of Heroes* (Fade into 3 soldiers in a bombed out apartment room. The soldier on the left is aiming a Mosin Nagant out a Window, the middle soldier is sitting next to the wall holding a MAB 38 and is cleaning the weapon, the right is leaning against the wall this soldier is holding a M1 Thompson. They are all wearing uniforms from the USSR, Words fade into view saying "Kiev, 1944") Right Soldier: I got news from the front that our comrades have broken the roaches and are coming to help us. Middle Soldier: You've said that twice this month and no help. Are you sure about this one. Right Soldier: Of Course, straight from Moscow *He points to his Canadian Radio Pack* and guess what! Left and middle soldier: What? Right soldier: I've heard rumors that they are going to make us heroes if were saved! Left and Middle: Yay! *Left Soldier looks out and suddenly dives into cover* Left Soldier: Roaches with a Tank! *Whispered Yell* (The Camera Plans to outside the window and turns down to look down the street with a King Tiger and 20 more Nazi's around it) Left Soldier: Give me that Bazooka... (Camera pans to the middle soldier grabbing a bazooka leaning against the wall) Right soldier: Here. (Right hands left the bazooka) Left Soldier: Here we go. (Left Soldier turns and aims the bazooka out the window and fires) TO BE CONTINUED Thank you all who read this through the whole thing!

The boyz in Kiev have their real life parallel in the Siege of Deir ez-Zor (2014-2017). These boyz held off against a rough 3:1 enemy numerical superiority in the heart of territory controlled by ISIS for 3 years and 2 months before the relief force broke through ISIS lines.

I recently had... correction I am still playing it, and its been a year and a half and I have 10 tank division, and about 16 infantry divisions defending Warsaw from a joint German-British attacking force. I am playing as Democratic poland and I joined the 4th International with the soviets and now Warsaw is surrounded and so is my entire army, but I still haven't capitulated and I am building Nukes while having about 100 divisions in Warsaw and Eastern Poland combined. I managed to inflict 3.6 Million deaths to the Germans out of their 4.09 million deaths. And i only lost 900k troops, so have at it.

Kiev The old capital of the Kievan Rus, the administrative center of the Ukranian SSR, and the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War. After a terrible start, the Axis flipped the table and tore through the Soviet lines like a knife through butter. Entire army groups were cut off and massacred by enemy troops while many more were routed in terror, their good position in the initial fighting making them complacent. As the foe approached Kiev, five divisions remained to defend this city, the thirty-third, five fifty-seventh, ninety-sixth, one fifteenth, and two eighty-fourth, with two score companies from more cowardly units staying as well. Nearly 1.25 million forces from both sides died in the streets of Kiev. Some died from guns, others to knives, debris, or starvation. Prisoners were hardly ever taken by the mid-point of the siege, with the city rapidly collapsing around Axis troops and partisans. By the end of 1945, Soviet reinforcements finally arrived, from Gomel. As their pocket inevitably collapsed, thousands of Gomel troops hid in boxes, boats, and anything buoyant as they floated down the river to Kiev. With them cane fresh guns, ammo, and supplies, some even being from Allied countries, such as the US, UK, and even Australia. By April of 1946, Soviet forces under Georgy Zhukov would finally retake the eastern shores of the Dnieper and would rapidly charge across every bridge available and on boats to save the city. The Axis forces, with the line on all fronts rapdily collapsing, cut their losses and fled with everything they could. Of the original 670k Soviet troops at the start, 137k remained, less than a quarter, with nearly 84% of the entire civilian populace having died with them. These men had originally called themselves the Boys of Kiev, but now barely any of them were without some sort of wound or story to tell, with not a single one of the original commanding officers among them, and the highest ranking officer being a lieutenant colonel that was missing his left arm, right foot, right ear, and two fingers on his right hand, his body covered in a tapestry of scars. Zhukov would immediately send a communique to Stalin, saying that Kiev had been a steel bastion, one that would need to be remembered across the entire Soviet Union. Stalin, seeing the boost this could bring to the Soviet Union's morale, agreed. Engineers and architects would be called for by Stalin from across the Soviet Union and every Soviet sector of the Ukraine. By war's end, nearly two-thirds of all the rubble was cleared, with settlers coming by the thousands to repopulate the city, with what few remained of the original citizens being moved into what would be known as the Martyr's Quarter, a sector with relatively clean and affordable homes and parks, so the locals could find peace after their year and a half of suffering. As for the Boys of Kiev, they would become the Kievan Phantoms, placed under Zhukov's personal command, given gray uniforms and top of the line gear from all Allied and Soviet sources, and would be used as urban warfare specialists. Some could take out entire Axis sentry teams by themselves, with snipers being able to hit an SS officer in the eye from nearly a kilometer away, and sappers who could see traps when even other trained sappers couldn't. One of them, First Sergeant Yuri Glashovicer, a 20 year old Kievan Phantom, would raise the Soviet sickle and hammer over the Reichstag on May 23, 1948, he was only 16 when the Siege had begun and had joined up with some of the original soldiers soon after, it is unknown if any of his original family ever survived. After the war the Phantoms were transferred to Moscow, living in an entirely private section of the city near a forest, serving as an Honour Guard and elite guardians of the city. Many would find wives and get married here, their children being known as the Kievan Heirs, all seen as part of a prestigious group with veterans as their fathers, many of their sons would join the Army and serve in the Phantoms themselves. When Glashovicer was interviewed in 1957 by western writers, he would say, "I don't care what they say about this whole "Cold War" whether the Communist East or Capitalist West is in the right, we all bled together in the War. Brothers and brothers standing back to back against tyranny and the destruction of their people. Many of us Phantoms will say that if you interview more than me, many of us have nothing but respect for the Americans and British that gave us valuable supplies. Because of them, we survived, we give them eternal thanks from the bottom of our hearts." -Synopsis of "The Steel Boys of Kiev: Phantoms of the Bastion."
