A little bit of historical information; when the Germans began their assault on France the Allies had air superiority, interestingly there was a massive armoured vehicle convoy traffic jam that occurred in the Low Countries where the main German armoured thrust occurred. This was actually spotted by French recon aircraft and reported to the French general staff. If the head of their general staff (General Gamelin) had believed the reports and sent the French and British bombers to destroy them then the entire German offensive would have failed. He didn’t believe the recon reports and refused to believe the reports when the Germans punched into France from the Low Countries as well.

Honestly, with the exception of the initial stages in the Battle of Britian, the Allies always had a superiority in fighter craft. The early years of the war (39-41) just didn't get the chance to show it very well because of either incompetence, ignorance, demilitarization before the war, or a number of other factors. For more information on this topic I suggest you watch Kraut's video on Desdin. He goes into the topic of Allied Air Supremacy at length and expertly breaks it down.

It's not even that the German and Italian are bad, the 25mm AA is just THAT good. If you play the Turda Campaign you will fear the 25mm AA, any planes with bad resistance will get clapped by a single one if caught off guard.

it's not really eugen that's "at fault" here. The mod author, MrCrisps, is also french, and he made the french units stronger than they historically should be. The B1 shoots too fast for having a 1man turret and has far too much visibility. It should be basically blind (due to overworked commander in the turret, who also has the job of loader and gunner) without infantry support, but it isn't in this mod. They also didn't have radios inside, so communication should be not really possible, but again the game ignores this since every unit can see any revealed enemy.

If units dont respond fluidly or easily, then the game automatically feels like shit to play. But yeah Chars should have big pp gun and big pp armor and not much else. It was a balanced game with historical stuff that was in that time being used. It really is just a skill issue, becuase they could not use blitzkrieg completely and effectively. It could get balanced in the way that the french army gets less tanks, because yes they were in some ways better than the german ones (only the Char S35 and B1 bis/ter), but they just didn't have enough numbers produced. Just my opinion. Also a skill issue.

The main German tank at the time were the Panzer II though. Neither nation had been able to mass produce their best tanks. And the French armoured formations seems to have been better than the German ones; 2 DLMs defeating 2 Panzer divisions at the battle of Hannut.

Some fact about the french air force during the battle of France, they shot down 50% of the german fighter with an inferior air force in planes and men. 1300 plane destroy by the DCA and the air force, 20% of Luftwaffe enlisted personnel were killed. (Only during the 6 week of the battle)

Well the French and German army's where about on par with eachother, the only main difference between the 2 was the leadership, the Germans had that down to a tee, the French not so much. Common saying is the French leadership surrendered while the military still fought.

@@ChipCheerio I beleieve one of the large issues as well is the lack of radios or at least radio usage for the French as well in their tanks. Coordination was a big issue. So I guess in real life, France did indeed have a major skill issue

@@ilikepankakesuk there's also the problem of the French tanks having 1 man turrets. The original thought was that you can have more tanks on the field if each tank takes less man power, which IS true, but it severely overworked the one man who had to command the driver, fire, load, and aim the main gun while coordinating with the rest of the unit and other units. So the horrible ergonomics made the terrible coordination that much worse as well as the lack of radio equipment.

So many then relied on other forms of signaling while command tanks had the radio. The Soviets and their t34s had that issue through most if not all the war where many new T34s weren’t equipped with radios to cut down on production time.

@@ChipCheerio French military had far fewer modern tanks though, that was the big issue. I just looked it up, they had about 3400 tanks vs Germany's ~2200ish, but as much as 40% of France's tanks were elsewhere with their colonies or whatever. Out of the sum total of tanks, many were Renault FTs and other outdated designs, whereas the famous B1 in its various incarnations made up only 800ish of their total tanks. Germany had switched over to mostly PZ 3s and assault guns, with other models supporting them/filling gaps, by the French invasion iirc. So while France, if consolidated, could've contended against Germany, they were stretched thin and using outdated tech+tactics anyways. Others already mentioned the lack of radios being a huge issue to top it off.

Because all German panzers had radios, they typically lured allied tanks into prepared anti-tank gun lines, using better communications. If German tanks had fought tank to tank then they would likely have been defeated as in the above video. Germany had fewer tanks and worse tanks than Fance, except for greater crew number and use of radios. Germany had a larger airforce, almost double the size, so this played a huge role as well. If France wasn’t run by pacifist socialists they could’ve been in better economic shape, modernized the military and met the Germans at Verdun again. Not saying they would’ve had the resources for a prolonged war of attrition but it would’ve been more inspiring because even though they were fully committed to the war as soon as it started they couldn’t put up a fight because the Germans just rolled past them. They had a maginot line funnel going and everything too and they had better leadership, experience; They even had the numbers. The military was just physically unprepared to do anything.

The germans simply were masters of masters of maneuver warfare. In both world wars once they got too bogged down they were grinded down and defeated. Even before the first world war, the great victory against napoleon III was due to better maneuvering and a faster army. The german war-machine was fast, not that strong.

They the char B1 had a radio actually, there were other tanks that didn't, or only had a radio receiver, but they had better armor and gun, but were slower, they were designed to be infantry support tanks originally, only adding the anti tank turret later in its development, but with enough turret armor to basically ignore the early German tanks they beat them severely in most engagements with enemy armor, the Germans had to rely on artillery or anti tank guns to destroy them. would it have been better with a larger crew? maybe, but to maintain the same armor on a larger turret it would have been much heavier, and even slower.

The Char B1's didn't have the issues of other French tanks. They had multi crewed turrets, every one of the B1's had a radio. Overall they were among the most successful multi-gun tanks.

not really "really good" but not bad either. the reason they lost was not an equipment issue, but the b1 tank was far worse than portrayed here. it didn't have radios for communication and had a 1man turret, meaning 1 guy had all 3 jobs of commander, gunner and loader. Meanwhile german tanks had 3 people doing those 3 jobs simultaneously. The game doesn't portray those shortcomings whatsoever, but it does portray it's positives, like thick armor etc. This ends up making those tanks unrealistically effective in this mod (which, by the way, was created by a french man, MrCrisps).

Fun fact french were that good in the early world war 2 but their leader were sh*t because they were like "we won the great war, so we are just better" and so made horrible mistake that lead to most of the french being encircle after that the french government capitulated because they were divided even if the technically never loose because most of their army and navy fled to africa
