Lyrics Midnight near the border Trying to cross the Rio Grande Runnin' with coyotes To where the streets are paved with gold Diving underwater When you hear the helicopter Knowing it's all been less than worthless If you see the border patrol Hiding in the shadows So scared that you want to scream But you dare not make a sound If you want to hold on to your dreams Hold on, it may not be a lot Hold on, 'cause you know it's all you got No matter the consequences Or the fear that grips your senses You have got to hold on to your dreams Down at Western Union Sending cash back to your family Drinking down cerveza Where the lights are very low Your mind may start to wander When you think about your village The woman that you love so much Who's still in Mexico At just two bucks an hour There is little to redeem this life Except that in your mind you're tryin' To hold on to your dreams Hold on, it may not be a lot Hold on, 'cause you know it's all you got No matter the consequences Or the fear that grips your senses You have got to hold on to your dreams City of the Angels With its bright light fascination Only adds to the confusion That your mind must now endure The gringos take advantage When they know that you're illegal You avoid la policía Like a plague that can't be cured Paying la mordida You find out just what pollo means But you dare not file complaints If you want to hold on to your dreams Hold on, it may not be a lot Hold on, 'cause you know it's all you got No matter the consequences Or the fear that grips your senses You have got to hold on to your dreams Hold on, it may not be a lot but I'm holding on 'Cause you know it's all you got No matter the consequences Or the fear that grips your senses You have got to hold on to your dreams Hold on, it may not be a lot but I'm holding on 'Cause you know it's all you got No matter the consequences Or the fear that grips your senses You have got to hold on to your dreams, yeah

Listen to the entire collections of Gill and you'll find that he was a visionary. His words and music is totally relevant in 2019 as it was the time he recorded it. Check out this album, those of Gun...Washington, DC...Angel Dust...The Bottle...First Minute of a New Day, etc. Listen and enjoy, share with the world.

Your comment is 3 years old so I hope you see this. I have loved Gil's music and lyrics since the very beginning. No one wrote songs like Johannesburg. Right now the world needs him more than ever and I miss his guidance. After what he did to Ronnie the Raygun, imagine what he could with the current lot. Cheders.

He didn't have to be able to see the future unfortunately because it was happening then and the sad truth is nothing has changed, if anything its gotten worse. Our species is done if we cant start seeing and treating each other with the humanity of unity.

I wish you could repost this with his explanations of the lyrics and his commentary about "illegal aliens--as oppossed to legal aliens who came here from Mars". Thanks for the song--it brings back a lot of memories.

One of the many iterations of the myriad stylings of this, the original urban troubadour. Whether through the rich vocal choruses of song, the measured pentameter of poetic verse, or the darting inflections of stinging socio-political commentary, this brother commanded global attention. Rest in peace from the torturing tribulations of a world forever spiraling downward. But also rest assured that because of you and your message of over fifty years longevity, the words still ring clear...and the drums still beat!🪘🪘

There are only a few thousand evil mofos stealing all the bounty of the earth from humanity and all the other creatures (who are suffering even worse than us). We outnumber them. We just need to break the spell which causes us to keep one another in chains so they can relax by the pool ... Now that Gil is back, there's at least two of us working on it ;)

One difference Gil! The border crossers actually work when they get into the US. Might want to speak to your brothers that feel they deserve more than those immigrants that work their asses off to crate a life for themselves, rather than them expecting for some 'whitey' to make their life! Always loved your music, but not necessarily your message which in my personal opinion, does nothing to create, anything for the black people of this country to take responsibility and take part in creating a better life for themselves and their families. The latter of which, for the most part, has no meaning to the man of the house! Just saying!
