This is the least likable Sally has ever been. Usually I love her no matter what but _that is her child._ And she's willing to give up her only daughter over a man she was never even in a relationship with. Sure, I can understand her being angry with Macy because Macy didn't set her straight. But _disowning_ her? No. Sally would have felt equally heartbroken when it dawned on her that Anthony didn't think of her in romantic terms even if Macy hadn't been part of the equation at all. She puts herself in these positions where she lets herself fall for a questionable younger guy who doesn't truly love her. It's Clarke Garrison all over again.

Damn, I love Sally and Macy's relationship, it was the best mother-daughter relation in the whole series to me, but Sally's behaviour here and over what, a man, some Clarke-clone who just plays with emotions of both women? And for her to think Macy deliberately throw away all the love she has for her mother and gets some sick satisfaction that she "stole" "her" man? And Anthony is in the middle of this and he is a pathethic character. He was creepy, now he's that, then he'll get psychotic. Sally, just *stop* confiding in Jack about this particular problem - at least you still _have_ a daughter - he doesn't. The scene where the bereaved Jack tries to reason with Sally and convince him not to throw away her relationship with Macy really hits the nail on the head. Jack lost his daughter and he couldn't do anything about it. Sally has the _choice_ to lose her daughter, and she has the _choice_ to keep her in her life. This scene also emphasizes the narrative payoff in Sally _choosing to lose her daughter because of Anthony_ now, and her later _choosing _*_not_*_ to lose her daughter because of Anthony._ Her *first* choice is obviously wrong, but her *second* choice redeems her. And the conversation with Jack highlights the contrast between Sally's imaginary loss, and Jack's *actual* loss (or so we believe at this point), which is mirrored by the *actual* loss that will threaten Sally and Macy's relationship later on. In a way, it serves Sally right that after whining to a bereaved father about (voluntarily) "losing" her own - very much alive - daughter, she will later have to be confronted with the possibility of actually losing her daughter _for real._
@v.b6028 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I totally agree. She’s really annoying me in this episode. I get that Sally feels betrayed and hurt, but she’s the mother so she should be the bigger person. She didn’t even let Macy explain herself. And then later in this episode, she says to Jack that Anthony was her last chance for happiness… Who said? She’s pretty much closed the door because she can’t have Anthony. And then whining to a man who just lost his daughter is very insensitive. Sally was not pleasant to watching this episode
@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
@@v.b6028 so true - and I can't believe Sally is blaming Macy for CJ's disappointment - the blame for that is Sally's and Sally's alone. As a mother, she should _never_ have allowed CJ to start thinking of Anthony as a father without ever bothering to check with Anthony whether or not he was interested in actually becoming a father to CJ. You don't let your little kid go on calling some guy "daddy" unless you are in a solid long term relationship with that man. Sally was projecting her own wishful thinking onto CJ, and CJ ended up getting hurt. When children are involved, it is better to err on the side of caution. Sally should have been clear with CJ that Anthony was a _friend_ unless and until she was *absolutely sure* (meaning actually having heard Anthony tell her so) that he wanted a future with her.

It just occurred to me that starting about now, Macy's character arc (and - which will become more evident later - Thorne's and Anthony's as well) is entering into a kind of "second act" in which themes that were explored during her "first act" are revisited. But these themes are not just repeated, but varied and reinvented, making them seem fresh but still recognizable. The first of these themes is the rift in the relationship between her and Sally - this was also the case when Macy first came to town. Then there is Macy being involved with a bad man and Sally disapproving - last time it was Mick, and now it's Anthony. And with Mick, Macy was the one willing to throw away her relationship with Sally over a man who didn't even love her (Macy wanted to quit Spectra and leave town with Mick), but now with Anthony, it's Sally making that very same mistake. In fact, almost everything that happens after this point in Macy's storyline for the next year, and Thorne's, and Anthony's, will correspond quite clearly with something that happened in the "first act" of those character arcs.

@@donkeygospel6 great additional "second act" examples! And, like you said, they are satisfying exactly because they are not actually "recycled" plot points as much as _reinvented_ plot points. I think the first half of the 90s is probably the era when we are the most likely to find these, as these years are close enough to the Bill Bell era to retain some of that narrative momentum, while being far away from the very beginning for the "first acts" to be finished. However, once the second act plays out, it becomes a much greater challenge for the writers to keep the plot going because the second act kind of "closes the symmetry". A third reinvention of the same theme, or the invention of a brand new theme, is more likely to feel either redundant or incoherent, respectively. The "second act" idea also supports your feeling that the dungeon storyline is weakened by its lack of connection to Bridget's paternity storyline.
