*BROOKE'S CURIOUS POSITIONING* Brooke has always used Bridget to get Ridge and now the show is doing it for her. This is a curious thing about how the character of Brooke has always been conceived. She's a more active character than Taylor, not limited by the moral conventions of The Good Girl, but she's also passive at important moments in the story and thus not as strong a Storyteller as Stephanie or Sheila. Here Brooke is not actively pursuing Ridge but the show needs them to be the end game (for now anyway) so we get this _deus ex machina_ with Bridget's shooting. Indeed what Brooke calls DESTINY are often these moments where the hand of -god- the writer helps her out or thwarts her ambitions. Recall that when she was taking control of BELIEF, it required Connor Davis pushing her to make the moves the whole way and TWO interventions by Fate (Ridge taking the wrong contract, Steve Crown walking into the meeting). Recall also that when Brooke was trying to divorce Eric and make the play for Ridge, things kept coming up like Eric's 60 days demand or Little Eric needing an adjustment period, and Brooke just sort of capitulated to these obstacles which led to her losing Ridge to Taylor. This curious positioning - where Brooke is both pursuing her goals but also being carried along by the story - is due to her unique character type. From the beginning, Bill Bell never wanted her to be all good or all bad, he always wanted her to exist in this middle space where her fans could view her as a heroine and the victim of Stephanie's bullying, but her detractors could also view her as a harlot and the bane of Stephanie's existence. The show has done a good job all these years of never really settling that question but at times it comes at the expense of the character's agency.
