*Three Men and a Baby* The fight over Little Eric is a storyline with no heroes. The show is trying to make Rick the hero by portraying his actions (through Amber’s eyes) as a grand romantic gesture. He did it all to get back the girl he loves and reconstruct his family. But to many viewers his actions seem selfish and self-destructive - Rick only wanted Amber and Little Eric back when someone else had them and he spent most of his marriage to Amber pining over Kimberly. Moreover his plan involves deceit (manipulating Becky's parents), bribery, and bringing a dangerous man into their lives. Not exactly heroic behavior. To the majority of the comment section, CJ is the hero because he wants to do right by Amber and the baby and he stands up to the snooty Forresters. But CJ doesn’t have the love of the girl which is fatal for the hero archetype. Amber keeping Rick’s plan a secret from CJ and her swooning over Rick’s romantic gesture makes it clear who she really wants. Moreover CJ trying to strong-arm Amber into disliking the Forresters and moving up the wedding (a tactic right out of Brooke’s playbook) are _not_ heroic moves and instead indicate that he is insecure and knows he’s playing a weak hand. We also have the words of Reliable Narrator Stephanie that CJ is just grieving the loss of Macy and Becky and her prediction that a marriage between CJ and Amber would be doomed. There’s just no way for CJ to win in this storyline; he’s not a hero, he’s just an obstacle on the path to Rick and Amber’s eventual reunion. And finally there’s Deacon, the man with the strongest legal claim to the baby but the weakest claim to heroism. He’s way more fun than Rick and CJ but he's also rude, crude and willing to sell his son to the highest bidder. He’s the guy who broke Saint Becky’s heart and the guy who will eventually come between Brooke and Bridget. Need I go on? None of these men are knights. Little Eric has three fathers but this storyline has no heroes.

This storyline has now taken a strange and unsettling turn, with Amber and the baby being _auctioned off_ to the highest bidder. And still Amber makes no attempt to shape her own future but passively lets the two families flght over her.
@NewYorkNick06077 ай бұрын
It's true Amber's not being active but her not telling Sally and CJ what Rick told her (even when they asked her directly) is a choice she's making. It tells you what her preferred outcome is and where she'd like the plot to go even if she's not the one shaping it (and unfortunately for CJ, it's not in his direction).
@sharonstewart48827 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 I just said the same thing! And what she says to the baby proves that she would rather be with Rick. She was only marrying CJ because he had the baby. Stephanie was right the whole time.
@TriniT217 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607exactly. By being ambivalent (and not straightforward with the Spectra/Garrison clan), Amber is actually shaping the story in the sense of not actively choosing CJ.
@annieo65277 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607that is a good point! Yes, Amber not telling the Spectras about Rick's plan _is_ a choice (just as telling them would have been a choice, so in this situation complete passivity was not really possible).

This episode made me actively angry at Amber. Nobody forced her to agree to marry CJ, but she did. Yet Rick comes along with this crazy scheme and she’s squeeing all over the place at how *romantic* he is. She’s also actively deceiving the Spectras by not telling them about Rick’s plan, and in fact telling them not to speak to Deacon (to avoid finding out about the plan). The truth is that Amber belonged to the Forresters lock, stock, and smoking barrel the second Helen put that French toast down in front of her. She just doesn’t have the integrity to admit it. And I question her concern for the baby at this point, too. She goes all gooey-eyed over Rick’s planning and barely pays lip service to the danger her child is now in, at the mercy of a grifting, disgusting sociopath. If someone endangered my baby, best *believe* I would not be grinning chidingly but lovingly at them. There are lots of problems with this storyline, but to me the biggest one is how boring and lackluster two of its ostensible main characters, Amber and Rick, are. The only character I’m rooting for is the adorable Little Eric, who, let’s be honest, could do a better job raising himself than these idiots would.
@TriniT217 ай бұрын
I totally agree with you about Amber, and esp how un-rootable she and Rick are as a couple. It's exactly how I felt about Thorne and Brooke. All their actions are totally selfish
@annieo65277 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Amber willingly agreed to marry CJ. She chose a life with CJ and the baby. (And really, she could do a lot worse. The Spectras have welcomed her with open arms and CJ is a more active dad than Rick.) And even if she was in love with Rick, the fact that Rick was willing to _put the child in danger_ and take him away from a stable home just so Rick could have him (and Amber, and the fun times Kimberly wouldn't give him) should be enough to make Amber close the door on Rick for good. At this point I am rooting for CJ to get sole custody of that baby. He would thrive growing up in the Spectra family with Sally as a grandmother, spending his afternoons in Sally's office eating grapes. Little Eric continues to be the brightest spot in this storyline. But I am enjoying Deacon too (I know we disagree on that 😊) because he is giving Rick exactly what he deserves.

@@annieo6527Listen, I have fully accepted that I am the cheese who stands alone when it comes to Deacon’s appeal (or lack thereof 😂). Different strokes etc. Great point about how welcoming the Spectras have been to Amber, and how that makes her behavior even worse. She didn’t need to marry CJ out of gratitude, but she could have exited with more grace. I love your plan for little Eric and his grapes and his plush doll. I could watch a whole show of his adventures hanging out at Spectra and plotting with Sally.
