This scene shows that the writers _do_ know who Sheila's main rival is. The was they almost, but not quite, have Stephanie and Sheila meet, and then have Sheila discover Stephanie's identity while Stephanie hears Sheila's voice and finds her earring but doesn't recognize the voice, is a very deliberate way of raising the tension. We know that if Stephanie and Sheila ever meet, the storyline will be over. But the potential that they _might_ meet adds momentum to the plot. It's also a nice step by step escaIation to first have Sheila encounter Taylor, and then Stephanie. Sheila is slowly getting closer to the center of the show, which also means that she is getting closer to the end of her story. The moment the Forresters find out about Sheila's identity, the storyline ends and Sheila must disappear.
@NewYorkNick06072 ай бұрын
Yes! At the same time it also shows the limitations of the plot because they've written Sheila into a corner. Because Sheila's last go-around ended with her shooting Stephanie, she can't be in scenes with Stephanie or Taylor or anyone else really so all they can do are these "close calls." It adds momentum yes but it indicates that Sheila can only be in the background until the climax of the storyline. This is why they shouldn't "cross the line" with Sheila (shooting main characters etc) because once you do that, it limits her movement and then she has to do even more outrageous things to keep the storyline exciting (that's why had her k i l l Lance for instance) and then _that_ in turn makes her more of a cardboard villain. It's a vicious cycle.
@annieo65272 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 This is so true, and we really feel this limitation of Sheila's movement here. This is why Sheila occasionally has to go to prison to "reset" herself, but that only works if the things she has done (or at least, the things she has been _caught_ doing) aren't _too_ horrible.
@NewYorkNick0607Ай бұрын
@@annieo6527 Exactly. It's a tricky balancing act but they initially got it right when Sheila returned the first time in 1996. Her poisoning Stephanie for example walked right up to the line but didn't cross it because Stephanie survived, the implication is that Sheila wanted to drive her mad, not k ill her, and most importantly, Sheila wasn't directly implicated. Everyone suspected she had done it but couldn't prove it. That's the zone they should've always kept Sheila in, a sort of low grade Villain so could return and be in the mix anytime. What you want is for everyone to recognize Sheila as dangerous but not _so dangerous_ that they can't be in scenes with her.
@annieo6527Ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 exactly! At least the show hasn't reached the post 2017 stage yet, where everyone recognizes Sheila as a dangerous kiIIer, so they... intentionally seek her out and pick a flght with her every chance they get. 🙄
@TriniT21Ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 yep... the trouble with Sheila is really that she's less multi faceted and now been made an overt villain (esp by direct bee unalivement of Lance). It's also like @AnnieO said about Sheila.. She's never really believed herself to be "bad", in fact... She's always believed she was a good person looking for love, who tries to be good, but everyone else keeps making her do bad things she doesn't really wanna do. Eg.. Even when she literally tried to drown Lauren in her hottub, we still saw her apologising and offering Lauren a towel to dry off 😂😂😂, when she realised she was still alive. Also your eg of the Steph poisoning (which is one of the best Sheila storylines to me) makes that same point. Sheila did bad things but thought she was good, and it made her somewhat relatable and multi faceted. Now, Sheila literally calls herself a baddie and seems to revel in that.

What was the point of this Eric/Brooke subplot? It feels like a cancelled storyline idea, but what exactly was the original writing plan here?
@annieo65272 ай бұрын
Good point! Yes, I also got that feeling - which is odd because at this point the writers must have known that Taylor would be exiting in a few weeks, meaning that of course Brooke would be be paired with Ridge.

@@annieo6527 I can't believe that Eric could be even remotely attracted to Brooke, after she's been with his 2 sons. 🤢 What baffles me even more is that Eric isn't even the least curious as to how Bridgit's break up with her husband, is related to her not talking to her mother (and given Brooke's reputation he shouldn't have to stretch his little brain too much). But I almost wish she'd gotten back with Eric, just to leave him to pursue Ridge when Taylor is unalived. It would be just what Eric deserved

Mind you, all soap opera's had a male villain like James Stenbeck and Stefano DiMera. Only here it was Sheila Carter. I reversed their last name here. It's Stefano Lovejoy for me with his boring calm character he plays and Sheila Dimera, because she's so fierce as a villain.
