This tutorial shows how to make a Bold ring inspired by the Brutalist Architecture movement of the post WW2 period. It features an 8 mm orange Cubic Zirconia. This is an advanced sort of project featuring a way to build a prong setting. For materials, I only used 16 gauge square wire. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful? Scroll down for information on my new Patreon!

You're right, this one definitely is a show piece... This was a really fun one to watch. You're execution of adding the shank was nine level as well, it integrated into the entire piece beautifully. Hope all is well with you and those you love, stay safe and stay warm! Thanks again for all you do. 😊 🤗

Thank you! I enjoyed making this one. It was something I’d never tried, and I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. I was just informed by my wife that this one is going into her armoire:)

Never heard of the Brutalist movement. Something to research. I think I will do it in lost wax. Thanks

Chad, that is an amazing piece! I love how you have developed your own techniques that seem to work well for you while also somehow keeping with the basic fundamentals that everyone must use. Thank you for sharing your beautiful workmanship 😄👏

Fab! Looks like the Basalt rock formations of the Giant’s Causeway. Make the stone green they’d sell well in Ireland.

The first thing that sprung to mind was the giants causeway in Ireland, it's got a great mythical story attached to it. That's awesome Chad, without a doubt my new fave piece. Thanks for sharing and happy Halloween.

Love the Orange CZ because I had been daydreaming of some jewelry with a piece of wulfinite. Maybe square or rectangular piece would compliment your silver design.

That’s a good thought Ellen! I can’t really take credit for this basic idea. It is modeled after some similar ones I’ve seen before:). Thanks for the nice comment!

Hi Chad, the brutalist ring is amazing, if a little daunting. I have noticed that you don’t pickle between steps, yet you don’t seem to have trouble getting the soldering steps done. This is quite revealing, as it goes against what I have been taught.

Thanks Joy! I do some things a little unconventionally. It’s difficult to explain in the comments without writing a book, but a short version is that I’m not painting specific areas with flux in order to contain where the solder flows, so removing previous flux is sort of irrelevant. If it gets so gummed up that it’s hard to evaluate my solder joints, I will pickle it for a while to clean it up a bit:). Thanks for the nice comment!

Do you use self-pickling flux? This goes a long way in reducing the amount of pickling that I find to be necessary when working.
