Coach, I really would love to hear your thoughts on that first drive of the 2nd half for us; we had Monty pounding the rock, 6,5, 7 yards on runs with SF penalty in between, couple minutes run off the clock, SF defense winded and beat down, we're asserting our will.... and then Ben goes flea flicker, LaPorta pass, Saint ..... run!?! up the middle!??!? Bam, we're in a 4th down situation again and then as we all know, Reynolds dropped the pass and the rest was history (esp after the Vildor headbutt of an INT). My question is; do you hold Ben accountable for that abject failure of play calling? I give him all the credit in the world for a BRILLIANT first half that was damn near flawlessly scripted and called, but the second half he had that recipe cooking and just threw it in the trash in favor of getting cute. Am I off base here? Can't say I'm shocked at all to see him coming back as OC for us because of 1) he has that unfinished business, and 2) I don't think the NFL thinks as highly of him as we all might want to think they do, when they see his 2nd half failings. Just my 2 cents.

#1 is spot on, I think #2 had more to do with the openings not being as perfect of a situation as this young Detroit core than ben not being wanted. He 100% got too cute at the end of the first drive 3q, but dan got too cute kicking before half as well. Overall there are probably 10+ people and a lot of luck to blame for the collapse, but there’s no excuse to not be better from it next year

The first play of the drive was a 15 yard pass to Laporta. Later in the drive he calls a great play action pass and Goff just misses an open Laporta now they’re 2nd and 10, hit Laporta for 6. 3rd and 4. No matter who’s running the ball there, the right guard is late to get off the double and Warner makes a fantastic play. They obviously out Brown there to pass but you can clearly see Goff check to the run when he saw the light box. They just didn’t execute on that drive, period.

20:02 agree totally 💯. Match the score. I’ve never been a fan of 4 th down calls unless it’s a trick play. We lost momentum right there right where you’re talking about that’s when everything changed.

11:00 - look at Chase Young on that Gibbs run... I mean, half the 49ers secondary was basically watching in awe, but Young.... just, wow. Absolutely abysmal effort.

Exactly the reason why the Lions didn’t target him during the trade deadline. I remember everyone being so mad when we didn’t get him, but I’d much rather have that draft pick still. You can watch Young every game and he shows terrible effort.

When Detroit converted the 3rd & 18 on their final drive of the first half, I told everyone in the house that the game was over if Detroit puts it in the end zone. Unfortunately they couldn't get it done. The Lions returned to the TURD quarter and the epic meltdown is now history.

I hope we get another season of Lions coverage, but I would understand if you moved to a different team next season to extend the reach of your channel. Also, I'd love to hear your thoughts on next season since Ben Johnson has decided to stay in Detroit. Great stuff! I agree with you on the 4th down decisions but I am not going to let the fact that they didn’t work out ruin my off season. Detroit Lions have made their fans proud. As a 49er fan I couldn't believe how easily they scored on the first half. In the second half I believe it was the drops that were costly and Goff only completed 3 passes under pressure. Campbell was consistent as he had been all year.

I've had a ball watching your content this season. My LIONS confused me in the second half. Lots of strange motion with Pene in the 4th quarter. I think Ben Johnson just tried to do too many cute things. I really did not have a problem with 1 of the 2 times Dan went for it instead of attempting the FG. Game just slipped away. Ben Johnson is coming back next year!

I still cannot believe we didn’t win that game. Everything had to go wrong in the second half for the 49ers to come back and win. There was about 6 things that all had to happen in order for the Lions to lose. If one of those 6 things doesn’t happen the lions win. I don’t blame 1 individual coach or player. It was a number of things that went wrong. Incredible season, we get both our Coordinators back next season. Our offense should have even more talent and our defense should have a lot more talent. Finally getting a cb1 hopefully and another edge and or dt and we should have another great season. I also believe Brad Holmes finally gets a new kicker that we can trust. 65mil in cap space available, I think we have a good 5 seasons at least where the window is open. That being said everything has to go right in a season to make the Super Bowl and you never knows. But Ive never been so excited for the future of this team. My goal next season for the Lions is to get the 1 seed and make it to the Super Bowl.

Sorry you were sick coach. I’m glad you’re feeling better. I have 1 word. Just 1 word that we lost. Momentum. We had so much momentum going up to the half. But when Dan Gamble went for it the 1 st time on 4 th down wasn’t wise. I know players have to do their job but you don’t go for it and lose momentum. The loss of momentum carried throughout the second half. We just can’t allow another team to get momentum when we had all of the momentum. I’m sorry I’m using the word momentum so much but that’s what happened we lost it and the 49ers are too good to give them the momentum. Great job coach I appreciate you.

That was the most errors ive seen this lions team commit. Nothing was going right in that second half. Drops, fumbles and int that bounce off your facemask for a 50 yard rec. But, Id still kick that first fg. Keep the pressure on San Fran and that can create errors for them.

Jamo, Gibbs, Laporta, Branch, Cambell, Hutch, Penei, Amon ra, Alim, Iffy, Kerby, Paschal, should all be better next season, on top of adding more talent in the draft and FA. I think this off season Brad Holmes finally goes in and signs a couple big name FAS to complete the team. I think he goes after L’Jarius Sneed and Jaylon Johnson hard and I really hope we sign one of them and get our cb1 we desperately need. I’d love for him to target Kendall Fuller as well if the money is right. I could see us adding that big body jump ball wr that we’ve been missing. I wouldn’t be surprised if we signed Mike Evans to a 2 year deal if the money is right. Maybe get Chark back, he would be cheap and him and Goff had some chemistry and he would add even more speed to this offense. I think we also sign an edge rusher and DT along with drafting an edge, guard/center, outside cb and kicker for starters. I can’t wait for this off season FA period and the draft it’s always exciting but it’s even more exciting when you have Brad Holmes as your GM running the show.

You are by far my favorite football content creator. As a lions fan I appreciate your input and analysis so much. Your content is gonna carry me all the way through the off-season. This loss was probably the worst possible way to end such a beautiful and historic season. The highest of highs for one half and the lowest of lows for the next. I agree that they should have gone for the field goal the first time around, though I totally understand Campbell’s thinking and I accept that’s just who he is. To me, the defense holding them to a field goal out of the half was promising. If you nullify it with a field goal of your own the crowd would’ve been silent. I think even a missed field goal doesn’t build as much crowd hype as a 4th down stop. Seemed like once we gave their fans a little hope the tables completely turned and the twilight zone-esque mistakes started to appear. Also I love Dan Campbell but if you truly trust your players so much you gotta either let Badgely do his thing every now and again or find someone else. I feel like not having any faith in your kicker is a recipe for disaster. All that said, I can’t wait to see where this team goes. And we get to run it back with Ben Johnson!

Crazy both the teams you watched this season lost, The Ravens playing completely out of character and The Lions playing completely in the go for it character and lost that way.

The most likely outcome of a FG attempt in both instances would have also been 0 points. Badgley is 9 of 20 (45%) in his career from 48+ which is the worst among high-volume kickers in NFL history. 3rd round pick Moody missed a 48 yarder earlier in the game. The 4th and 2 attempt was +2.2 WP and the 4th and 3 was +2 WP. For the season the Lions were 17 of 22 (77%) at converting 4th and 3 or fewer. I know you didn't want to hear the stats but the FG was far from automatic and this team was built on (and successful at all year) using all 4 downs.

I’m a Lions fan but damn I wish at least one of the teams being the Lions and Ravens won this weekend so I had someone to root for this Super Bowl. I hate both the Cheifs and 49ers, I really don’t care who wins.
