They were bred together 3 times. Secretariat had two older full sisters: Syrian Sea (1965) a multiple stakes winner and a successful broodmare, and The Bride (1969), unplaced in 4 starts.

Speaking from experience as a former trainer ,, My best horse was a grandson of bold ruler,, He had alot of the same traits as his grandfather, Ran his best on the lead,, Temperament crazy and unpredictable as a drunk & scorned woman,,, I've heard stories of bold ruler being almost next to impossible to handle ,, The stewards granted permission for bold ruler to be saddled outside on the track while being led in a circle,, Apparently he was impossible to do anything with in the paddock,,, Due to his rough and rowdy nature !

I wouldn't categorize Secretariat as a "great" sire, though he was better than many people think -- an above average sire of racehorses, and a great broodmare sire. Tapit, the most successful sire in North America since Storm Cat, is a direct male line descendant of Bold Ruler. Storm Cat has Bold Ruler blood, but not in direct male line.

@@marysueeasteregg you are right. But like in humans, there are traits that are passed on from mothers to sons. So, like how Sec got the big heart and stamina of Princequillo, from her dam and Princequillo's daughter, Something Royal. Sec was one of the leading broadmare sire of his time and the stakes winners we have today are from his daughters like Terlingua, the dam of Storm Cat. Terrific sire AP indy, who has so many great descendants today, was Sec's descendant thru his daughter, Weekend Surprise. Bold Ruler's great genes are not all Nasrullah. He had Fair Play's genes thru Miss Disco. I would consider Fair Play as the greatest sire of all time since he produced Man O War, War Admiral, Seabiscuit, and his daughter Miss Disco who in turned produced Bold Ruler whose descendants include those from Sec, Seattle Slew, AP Indy, Storm Cat. The great Ruffian was Bold Ruler's grand daughter too. While sires have often been the focus, dams are equally contributory too. Infact, among humans, in genetics, there are studies that show certain traits can only be passed from daughters to sons. Like intelligence. As a science teacher of 35 years, i noticed most intelligent among my students of all years, are all males. And when you study their bloodlines, most have high IQed mothers and these IQ got enhanced further when these genes were transmitted to their sons, who became just as or more intelligent than their mothers. I believe God's creation is fair to distribute good genes and transmittability abilities to both parents. Creation is both awesome and complex.

The same is of course true for his great son Frankel, as well as Galileo's great half-brother Sea the Stars. And Nearco has been influential through lines other than those you mentioned. Sunday Silence, so influential in Japan (leading sire there 14 times, sired 69.9% winners), traces in direct male line to Nearco, through Royal Charger/Turn-To/ Hail to Reason/ Halo.

You make Bold Ruler sound like a one-hit wonder as a stud, like Seabiscuit's sire Hard Tack. *Bold Ruler was already firmly established as a great stud when Secretariat was conceived, in BR's 3rd-to-last crop. Bold Ruler sired ELEVEN CHAMPIONS, in addition to other G1 winners.* Secretariat is not even his sole Hall of Famer; his daughter Gamely is also in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame (and 87th in Blood-Horses list of the greatest American-raced TBs of the 20th century.) Quoted from American Classic Pedigrees entry on Bold Ruler: *"Bold Ruler led the American general sire list eight times (1963-1969 and 1973), more than any other stallion in the 20th century; he also led the juvenile sire list a record six times.* According to Jockey Club records, Bold Ruler sired 240 winners (65.6%) and 82 stakes winners (22.4%) from 366 named foals. He was often categorized as a sire of precocious juveniles that did not train on or stay despite siring Bold Bidder, Gamely, Lamb Chop, Secretariat and Wajima, all champions at 3 or older and all winners of major races at 1¼ miles or more." His record eight times leading the general sires list was accomplished in just 13 seasons at stud, btw -- BR died in middle age, at 17 years old. The earlier Man o'War, at 17% stakes winners, was hampered by restricted books of mares. As far as Secretariat's talents coming from his dam's side, that's true for his stamina and his talent on grass. *Secretariat's sprinter-type speed came from Bold Ruler.* In the dosage system, Bold Ruler is a Brilliant/Intermediate chef-de-race, meaning an outstanding sire of sprint and middle distance horses. Prior to the Kentucky Derby, there was concern Secretariat could not handle 10 (much less 12) furlongs, because Bold Ruler progeny were perceived, perhaps unfairly (see the second paragraph) as sprint/middle-distance specialists. Not many male lines have been better than Bold Ruler's, though some have been more prolific. He was the dominant sire of sires during the 1970's; look at his Wikipedia entry for a list of important sires BR sired. (Round Table, the other great North American sire of BR's era, was stronger as a broodmare sire than as a sire of sires, as would later be true for Secretariat.) Bold Ruler's direct male line did come close to disappearing, but it was revived through his direct male-line descendents A.P. Indy (son of Seattle Slew) and Tapit, now winding down his career as the most successful North American stallion since Storm Cat. A.P. Indy has the highest rate, 12.5% of stakes winners, in the current "big book" era. Tapit's reputation as a sire of sires is growing. (Who were you thinking of for better male lines, btw? Not saying there haven't been better, but BR's male line is not to be dismissed.) You are correct Bold Ruler was known for big-bodied horses prone to fragility. Secretariat and a few others aside, he was overlooked as a sire of winners at classic distances. But he was unchallenged as the preeminent stallion of his generation in North America.

To whip a horse as mercilessly as Pincay whipped Sham in the Preakness is SO inhumane. Sham did the best he could and better than any other horse had done against Red, but thanks to being pushed beyond his limits in the Belmont, Sham brokedown and had to be retired.

Bold Ruler is one of the relatively rare Thoroughbreds (Man o'War is another) who was Roman nosed, meaning he had a convex profile. Secretariat had a more refined, Arabian-like profile with a slight dish. Bold Ruler's convex profile is most noticeable in pics here at :36, 1:34 and 3:11. A straight profile is more common in TBs than either a Roman nose or a dish face.

@hound Dogie Chad Have no idea what you are basing that claim on. There are 11 Hyperions listed in Thoroughbred pedigrees, per pedigree.com. By far the most famous was the Hyperion foaled in 1930, an English champion runner and very important sire, and very definitely a Thoroughbred, not an Arabian -- though his profile in photos does appear dished. That Hyperion does not appear in Secretariat's pedigree. The earliest Hyperion appearing in Thoroughbred pedigrees is an English-bred Thoroughbred foaled in 1793. That Hyperion is already 4 to 8 (or more) generations removed from the imported oriental (Arab, Barb & Turk) blood that had been bred with native British horses to create the Thoroughbred. The imported foundation Arabians typically had "names" like Leedes Arabian, Cullen Arabian, and the more famous Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian. There was another "early" Hyperion (foaled 1802) who seems to have been American-bred, and to have died without progeny. But no Hyperion appears among the foundation stock of the Thoroughbred.

I agree. Per American Classic Pedigrees, the ancestor Secretariat was most often compared to in looks was Discovery, Bold Ruler's damsire. (That site describes Discovery as "a massively built, handsome chestnut with excellent conformation.") For a good photo of Discovery, look up the article "King of the Whitney: Hall of Fame member Discovery is only horse to win historic Saratoga race three years in row," by Brien Bouyea Jul 31, 2020.

No direct descendants are around for Ruffian, obviously. Numerous (!) horses are going to carry Bold Ruler (her grandsire); even more will carry Native Dancer (her damsire) blood, mostly via the now ubiquitous Native Dancer grandson Northern Dancer. At this point, the Secretariat and Bold Ruler blood is so many generations back (typically 4-6 generations back for Secretariat) that it isn't terribly pertinent. But recent prominent horses who have been direct descendants of Secretariat include California Chrome, Beholder, Frosted (and all of Tapit's many distinguished progeny), current stars Maximum Security, Tiz the Law, Gamine and Swiss Skydiver, and 6 of the last 7 Kentucky Derby winners: Authentic, Justify, Always Dreaming, Nyquist, American Pharoah and Orb. As far as how I "know" this, it's a matter of searching pedigree.com/Pedigree Online Thoroughbred database (database of TB pedigree charts -- they can be traced back to the 1700's) and cross-checking with the list of Derby winners, not all of whom I remembered.
