He's not the only one! I'm not about to look up their names but there's at least two more. I don't understand why people are shocked. We saved an AP Indy foal 2 years ago at auction for $400. The meat market didn't want her because she was emaciated and had no value. No, we didn't take her because she was his foal we found out when we researched her lip tattoo. This is nothing new. Pedigree never matters at auction. A dime a dozen.

I have a horse saved from the kill pen emanciated, a mare descendant of Secretariat on top and bottom meaning sire and Dam both were Secretariat descendants. Seattle Slew's son, Slew of Gold and Secretariat's General Assemnbly his Sire. Other greats coming out of Secretatiat's daughter known as the Queen, named Terlingua and Storm bird out of the great Canadian legend Notthern Dancer foalefd the handsome successful at racing and as a sire Storm cat. Other legends like Buckpasser, Gallant Man, Native Dancer, Poker and War Admiral sired by the great Man O War and more. There are broodmares who are recognized on the track and as influences of fantastic traits desired in the breed awarded Dam of the year, hall of fame inductees. A fantastic pedigree. I paid 165.00 pound on the hoof not knowing her history or breed for that matter. It was when she started transforming, gaining weight, I started recognizing her lines as a thoroughbred. I had a thought to check her lip but forgot about it until a few weeks ago admiring her as a thoroughbred, I flipped her lip up. There it was! I got a friend to hold her lip while I snapped some pics. It took another try in sunlight to see the first tattoo. A letter and 3 numbers were clear the others were too faded. The partial tatoo and a detailed description came back with her breeders name, her name, birthday. The jockey club matched her tight ti the placement of a cowlick and her white sock describing it higher n the back than the front. I ran the free 5 way pedigree and was amazed. Sad how she ended up I such shape. She's 14 years old. I know right now 2 are at Temn Ship Pen in Cleveland, TN. Time is running out but haven't been able to get anyone to purchase them for 900. Each. They lay them over 2 weeks on an inflated price What don't sale goes to slaughter. They will not reduce the price and set a precedent. I have no more room per zoning restrictions . I have another Quarter pony also a kill pen horse. Sad. Theses magnificent animals end up in tragedy.

Nonsense on that "all u see in kill pens are Ottbs". Check out the number of horses that are racing every year in the US compared to the number of horses that go through the auctions and are bought by kill buyers. Like, the number of horses racing is a tiny percent of the ones that end up on meat hooks. Most of the horses going to Canada and Mexico are grade horses, crossbreds and QH types, not ex-racers.

They start racing these horses too early, there bones haven't matured , that is why so many get hurt and die. Racing an animal to make money is a sick way to earn a living, off the torture of horses that are to young to start racing at the age of 2 yrs old. I am glad their are more of Secretariat's off spring out there, maybe someday they will finally learn that the horses DESERVE BETTER THAN WHAT THEY ARE GIVEN. Probably not soon enough though. Just my opinion.

The kind of trainer this man was, says it all. Beautiful grandson of my beloved Secretariat ... the best of the best. Two souls now united forever. R.I.P. This is a perfect example of young trainers starting 2 yr olds whose knees are not yet closed, not giving them time to come to it on their own, always rushing. The original Sport of Kings, has become just that. Not too many trainers left that are there for the dream of finding that 1 good horse with a passion for the sport. Why did they have to put him down? I saw one of Secretariat's grandson in a boarding stall in KY. He was a big horse and was a dark roan. He was old and may have died soon after. The tag on his door just said Secretariate's grandson. Secretariat was my all time favorite horse. I watched live as he won the Triple Crown in 1973. I bought a full blooded Arabian in 1992. She was pregnant. The foal was male, roan color with a star slip and a snip on his face and had stockinged feet and legs the exact same as Secretariate! I couldn't believe it!

Just wanted to address two things: 1. There are a lot of Secretariat descendants out there. It's not beyond the scope of reality that there are other grandsons/daughters still living. 2. And should be #1- there are many many many well bred thoroughbred horses thrown out at the meat auction. This is the reality of the industry. Not all well bred horses pan out. A horse can sell for 1 million at auction and through the industry revolving door it not successful , can find itself at a meat auction within 2-3 years selling as meat on the hoof, priced by the pound. It's dreadful. They pull them from the track to the truck and straight to the meat man. A horse can finish last on Monday and be in the food chain by Wednesday. Tracks have put 'no slaughter' sale policies in place , but it still happens all the time. Meat men falsify the papers and send drug filled horses to the slaughterhouse for human consumption. It would be kinder to shoot them at the track, as they do in Puerto Rico.

Yes it’s pretty disgusting that all these horses are sent to the kill pipeline which brutality abuses them from shipping them to killing them. Hanging them by one leg while they’re still alive and electrocuting them, whipping them. It’s an unbelievable sight to see. Plus, these horses are not meant for humane consumption. They’re not suited for animal consumption either. They don’t tell dog and cat owners that the food they buy has horse meat in it and that the horses from the USA and Canada are full of chemicals due to all the medications, supplements, and every different concoction that you can’t even imagine that the trainers give to the horses to perform better. This is a dirty secret that these kill pipe lines don’t want you to know. If you’re going to slaughter animals, at least have the decency to do it humanly and tell the people what they’re eating even if the meat is being sent overseas.

I’m sorry to say this, but what happened to Johnny Leroy is really the dark underside of horse racing. Many, many horses are fatally injured each year while training for or running a race. It’s very sad, and I’ve stopped watching the Triple Crown races, as thrilling as they are, because I don’t know how the horses are treated, if they are drugged, if they have a fracture or some other reason that should be disqualifying. Basically, the physiology of race horses is too fragile for what they are being asked to do. Note the many leg/ankle injuries. It might be different if they could be treated for these injuries, but they can’t, so the only option is to kill them. Immediately. Because that is what is happening, despite the distant, unemotional word, euthanized.

I googled and found this, also on facebook, don't know why cause of death wasn't explained on this video. If you type in Shirley Bennett in FB this whole post by her will probably be there. On Thursday, December 11, (wrong date-it happened on the 10th) Johnny Leroy went to the track at Palm Beach Downs for a routine gallop with his regular exercise rider. On the far turn it was reported by the rider and trainer that the horse suddenly went towards the outside rail and collapsed. Examination revealed a complete fracture of the horse’s left radius. Unfortunately, this is a catastrophic injury in the horse, and Johnny Leroy was humanely euthanized on the racetrack. We are extremely sorry for this tragic loss.

Racing horses is a brutal business which claims the lives of several horses every year. many having to be euthanized right there on the tracks. I have seen them haul these "curtains" out to block peopled from having to see the horses being put down.this kind of thing is seen in much of the racing world as simply business as usual. it is a necessary risk that is considered acceptable if you want to win.

The piece is long, but these are the 2 relevant paragraphs as to what happened. I'm wondering what this part means re. 'not having him under control as much as he wanted". He said he was very aggressive on the track (the horse?) and how HE WAS TRYING "DIFFERENT THINGS" to harness his energy." again, the rider was trying different things or the horse was, to harness his energy. The horse collapsed after rider and or trainer didn't have Johnny "under control as much as he wanted". Had this ever happened before? Was this Johnny's first trip to Gulfstream? How long was rider his "regular exercise rider". I googled Johnny Leroy Secretariat and found this. Johnny Leroy went to the track at Palm Beach Downs for a routine gallop with his regular exercise rider. (The email was not addressed to Shirley as the owner/breeder, nor was it signed by anyone). I can only tell you what I’ve been told. I spoke to Todd at Gulfstream Park while claiming back one of our home bred mares. He was sincerely apologetic about the accident and explained a few things about his concerns of not having him “under control” as much as he wanted. He said he was very aggressive on the track and how he was trying different things to harness his energy. facebook.com/secretariats.glory/posts/550980025076333

Really sounds like the rider & trainer were responsible for what happened. The horse was likely already injured & maybe that's why he was acting up. This happens a lot, and everyone knows Pletcher does not always have the best interest of his horses in mind.
@lired707 жыл бұрын
This story is tragic indeed! However, people have to understand that Secretariat was syndicated for over 6 million dollars! That's about $190,000 for him to impregnate a mare! There are probably too many horses out there with his genes floating around. When you get into genealogy, it gets nasty! Everyone hopes that a great racehorse will duplicate himself, this rarely happens! With horses being artificially inseminated, (it is a fact in the canine world), when one is trying to track one gene, a lot of the other genes are diluted and the end result is ugly! Personally, I have never owned a horse, I have been around a lot of them and was a rider from age 10. My personal experience was with my Labrador Retrievers! I had no idea that the breeder was going for an all white litter! There is no white Lab! However, you can dilute a yellow Lab's genes to get to white! The AKC will accept them and document them as yellow! Why? You can only get a white from diluted yellow genes! What this can represent for the unsuspecting owner is heartbreak for the dog! My 2 Labs both siblings went through serious leg surgeries, (severed ACL's, torn meniscus). My female had OCD, my male had no thyroid function! They had so much love and the best medical care available. They were deemed genetically defective! So, my advice to anyone buying an animal is to tread cautiously, do your homework and be financially prepared for what could happen. Don't buy a horse or dog for color or because it may have a great racehorse's genes. Let nature take it's course. I don't think that I will see a horse of Secretariat's caliber in my lifetime. He was bred the old fashioned way, and was won from a coin toss!! We will never get to what he was by trying to duplicate him. We as humans have to be mindful of the animal. Truly, I love these horses, however, I have lost respect for the sport! I think that Johnny Leroy may have been a victim of dare I say a genetic quirk and perhaps not handled as well as he could have been?
@michellecotter70177 жыл бұрын
You're right. When people try to reproduce something they need more then one gene of it. In the canine world that I am in I bred a top ten dog of my breed in the country. To do that you must line breed. That means you need to have the same genes on the sire and mares side not just one on one side. It would take at least 3 of secretariats genes to try to reproduce himself. That is probably why it has yet to happen. And without him around and not knowing if there is frozen semen on him ( which there should have been) plus not knowing how many of his mares are still out there you will never get him. They need to take Sires and Mares with his direct genes on both sides to try and get it. Not sure if they ever did that. I know he produced way more mares then stallions. But they could have taken frozen semen and used it on some of the granddaughters so it would not be too close in pedigree. That might have worked. JMO

Does anyone know why Johnny Leroy was euthanized? I’ve been looking and don’t see anything that says why. Would appreciate any information … So sorry for your loss … RIP Johnny Leroy … You are deeply loved/sorely missed 😭💔

Sorry for the confusion: Johnny Leroy was the last born grandson on May 1, 2013. There are many grandchildren still out there but they are older. I have another grandson foaled in 2011, Secretariat's Glory. There was another grandson that also foaled in 2011 that was reported to the Jockey Club named Hiccup. He as from New York and actually raced against Glory at Gulfstream Park, FL. Glory Meadows breeds exclusively to Secretariat bloodlines for the pure joy of growing the Secretariat Family Tree. We currently have 22 descendants from daughter, grandson, granddaughter, and rest are great, great-great & great-great-great grandchildren of the greatest horse that ever lived in my book. I will graciously stand corrected if anyone has one born after 5-1-2013.

Those poor animals the majority of people treat those poor horses like money making machines subject to be abused and exploited the most of the time in the horse race industry those poor animals finish with injuries, dead or in slaughter houses with a few exceptions is so sad and cruel ( for the people who really don’t know what happens to this horse here is the information he was running for training purposes and suddenly he went into the rail and collapsed he has a devastating injury in the left leg and the poor horse have to be euthanize . )

I am also the legal owner of a great granddaughter, last known by the name Royal Secret, foaled in 2010, missing since 2012, 14.1hh black, no markings, with a large scar on the inside of her right hind leg.

Those of us and we are majority who don't have the where with all to have the best trainers and GOOD riders who don't seem like they are mean and are far to big to be jockeys simply don't try to train a horse for racing it clearly is a sport that requiters LOVE ,dedication and lots of money

never said why he was put down I would say he broke his leak with all the wt they had on him as a young colt the jockey look way to heavy for him
