Once again we see that Connor and James occupy a similar "space" on the show with the two of them trying to ask Maggie out on a date. And the future pairing of Maggie and James means he will win that competition which also makes this another example of James _crowding out_ Connor's role on the show. I wrote about this phenomenon in episodes *1842* and *2071.*

*Annie* has written about the fairytale aspects of Anthony's storyline and in this episode there is a reference to the three deadly objects the Queen used to try to k ill Snow White. The poisoned apple is represented by the "arsenic" salad dressing that he serves to Macy, the suffocating corset is represented by the lingerie he demands that she wear despite her discomfort, and the poisoned comb is represented by the 🔫 which Anthony can put to Macy's head.
@annieo652710 ай бұрын
Ooh, I love it! I totally missed the "fairy tale three" in this scene, but you are right - there are _three_ times when the show plays with our expectations of Macy's imminent unalivement (or rather, that _Anthony_ plays with _Macy's_ expectations of him mur de ring her, like a cat playing with a mouse), first him making her eat the salad not knowing whether or not it's poisoned, then him making her close her eyes and accept his "surprise" not knowing what he will do to her while her eyes are closed, and finally him about to enter the bedroom with the 🔫, which is how he _actually_ intends to unalive her. These three objects also represent the three courses on the "menu" for the evening - dinner, s ex, and death.

In this episode, Sally is explicitly stating what *Nick* and I have been discussing before, how Sally's actions here are her way of redeeming the mistakes she made with Anthony early on in the storyline - inviting him into her life, allowing him to get close to Macy, and letting him drive a wedge between Sally and Macy. Sally says it herself - she got Anthony _into_ Macy's life, and now she has to get Anthony _out_ of Macy's life. Opening the door to Anthony was _Sally's_ mistake, not Macy's, and so it makes sense that it is Sally, not Macy, who must ultimately pay the price. In fact, I am only now realizing that this is another one of those structural "palindrome points" in this storyline, but one I missed in my list from episode 1956 (where it fits in between points 2 and 3) - right after Macy and Anthony's first encounter, Sally decided to welcome Anthony into Macy's orbit, and now, right before Macy and Anthony's _last_ scene (which is a mirror image of that first night), Sally has decided to do the _reverse_ and get rid of him.
@NewYorkNick060710 ай бұрын

These scenes with Anthony and Macy are alot more harrowing than those of Sheila's farewell at the Forresters. At least it's just Anthony vs Macy. At the Forresters it was 6 ppl vs Sheila plus police outside and somehow Sheila still had the upper hand 😕. And I found myself chuckling more at Sheila's antics (and those of the others even at gunpoint). I'm not laughing today (except for the vision of Sally climbing up the fire escape 😂) ...seriously tho... Anthony really has me feeling uneasy and worried for Macy.
@NewYorkNick060710 ай бұрын
Absolutely. And I think this shows again what a complex and interesting character Sheila was. She didn't terrify us like Anthony because she wasn't pure evil. The viewer could relate to and even identify with Sheila (especially when Eric was being a terrible husband to her and several of us in the comments took her side in the marriage!).
@annieo652710 ай бұрын
Great point! I think it really proves the point *Nick* made a while ago about "surprise vs suspense". Sheila's goodbye party played more on the _surprise_ element - Sheila is in the house! Sheila pulls out a 🔫! Sheila tries to unalive herself! Yes, we _did_ have clues about these plot points beforehand, but they weren't _present_ in the scene until Sheila showed them. Macy and Anthony's "goodbye dinner" is _all about suspense._ We see the "dance of the hidden objects" throughout the evening, we know exactly what each of the characters are planning, we _sense_ the danger that Macy is in and watch her move closer and closer to disaster. Then there is the whole question of vulnerability. The Forresters were surrounded by the police and each other. Sheila was alone and actually quite vulnerable, and in the end she backed down and turned out to be less of a threat, less of a villain, than we thought. The whole setup felt a little theatrical (and of course Ridge and Eric's acting didn't exactly help the seriousness of the scene). Macy, by contrast, is alone, unarmed, exposed, and fighting pure evil. And finally, relatability. Our sympathies in the first scenario were actually with _Sheila_ (mine, anyway). In the second scenario, we identify entirely with Macy and so we *feel her fear* much more than we felt the Forresters' fear.
@NewYorkNick060710 ай бұрын
@@annieo6527 Oh good point! Another reason this scene is more terrifying than Sheila's Goodbye Party is because it's more _suspenseful._ That's so true! Even though Sheila was a more complex character than Anthony, the denouement of her storyline was not particularly well-written while Anthony's final chapter is currently the best written storyline on the show (again minus the un-involvement of the Forresters in Thorne's plight). When Sheila was waving around that 🔫 the other characters didn't even seem scared with Stephanie outright insulting Sheila and Lauren scoffing at her powerlessness. That is _not_ the way it feels now when Anthony is brandishing a we a p on. 😱
@teligon10 ай бұрын
I have to wonder if we - the audience - are detecting his tone, volume, sarcasm, giving commands and double entendre and Macy is not seeing just how dangerous this is becoming. * The tape recorder and the 🔫* The setting for Anthony and Macy's final dinner is interesting in that the deadly undercurrent never quite breaks through the romantic surface level. Throughout the episode, Anthony and Macy carry out the motions of a couple in love, while each of them is secretly plotting the other's destruction in an elaborate cobra vs mongoose dance. And this life-or-death struggle for plot control is clearly manifested in two hidden objects, the tape recorder and the🔫, which the two characters are shown continuously handling and concealing from each other (even as they tell each other that they have nothing to hide - the use of extreme closeups in this episode is very suggestive and a nice touch in the camerawork). These two objects represent the different ways that Macy and Anthony are trying to take control of the plot - Macy using truth (the tape) and Anthony using force (the g un). Both their "we a po ns of choice" in this duel represent something fundamental about who they are as characters, the🔫being a ph a llic and threa tening object, and the tape recorder being a tool for _making one's _*_voice_*_ heard._ And it is clear that the battle between Macy and Anthony is a battle between these two objects - whoever controls the objects, controls the course of events. Both characters need to hold on to their own object _but also take charge of the other's object_ in order to succeed. Macy will need to get hold of the g un or she loses her life. Anthony will need to get hold of the tape recorder or he loses his freedom. But Anthony has the upper hand because he _knows_ about the existence of the tape recorder while Macy _doesn't_ know about the existence of the🔫.

I was going to write something about Macy and Anthony struggling for control of the plot in this episode and then I realized, Annie will totally have that beat covered. And you did it brilliantly! 🙂Love your point about who controls the object, controls the plot. This struggle is also playing out the way different artists (and both Anthony and Macy are artists) compete to be the _auteur_ of a piece of art, like putting on a TV show. Macy trying to “record” the sound and Anthony trying to "s h ** t the ending." And by the end of the episode, it seems Anthony has taken full control of the scene the way a director tries to impose his will: by refusing to read the script that Macy wants him to read (the confession) and literally directing Macy where to sit: 2:20 and 10:50.
@annieo652710 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 great points! And I think what you wrote in another post about Anthony's "deadly double entendres" can also be understood as manifestations of plot control. He is so sure of his power that he can afford all these unnecessary flourishes. He is basically _toying_ with Macy - talking about her death using word play, making her follow his commands and enjoying the discomfort it causes her, making her say that she loves him, telling her what to wear, making her close her eyes and then waving the 🔫 around in front of her, because he knows that he _can_ - he knows that she will do _anything_ to get her tape recording. It's quite a cr uel game that he's playing because he is using her hope against her to get her to do his bidding, knowing that everything she does is in vain because he intends to k ill her anyway.

As per usual, the show's best storyline gets the least screen time. What makes it worse is that it's reaching a significant climax. If this was the climax of a Ridge/Brooke/Taylor storyline, it would dominate an entire episode (or episodes). But no, Macy/Sally/Anthony/Thorne are stuck, fighting for screen time with Brad's efforts to build up Maggie's character. That is if you call three male characters and her daughter hyping her up a form of character development/building.

With Sheila temporarily gone Anthony is occupying the villain position more than ever. Yesterday Thorne asked Macy (episode 2088 after the 9 minute mark) _How did this happen Macy? How Did we get so mixed up with a maniac like Anthony?_ *The answer is Sheila.* Sheila paved the way for Anthony to slither his way into Macy's life like the snake 🐍 that he is. She did this by spiking Macy's orange juice with vodka in episode 1648 (15: 08). All this because Thorne expressed his views about Sheila not being good enough for his loser dad, and he didn't invite Sheila to Macy's party to celebrate her sobriety. Sheila is a sociopath, she's incapable of seeing herself as the problem like her "good friend." Sheila added more vodka 🥃🍸as Macy was saying hi to a friend/acquaintance in episode 1649 around 6: 40 mark. My Gosh Anthony almost violated Macy when she was unconscious in episode 1650 We also have Sally, knowing what Anthony had tried to do still encouraged Anthony to pursue Macy just so that she can end her marriage to Thorne (Sally was on one of her anti all things Forrester post her failed relationship with Jack). She herself ended up falling for Armando. Back to Anthony: - Macy's 12 step program was compromised. - Her marriage was ruined (poor communication between her and Thorne was still a major factor). - Her relationship with her mom Sally was almost destroyed. - Irv got killed viciously. - Thorne is -forgotten- a lot more than usual in prison for a crime he didn't even commit.

The conflation of sex and murder in the Macy/Anthony scenes was interesting, and a very telling indicator of Anthony’s dark, twisted, pathology. First, Anthony plots to f*ck Macy, then kill her, while clearly identifying both as sources of passion. To him, though, the murder is the true “climax” of the evening, as is evidenced by his taunts about the “dessert” being the best part. Continuing this theme, a blindfolded Macy purrs to Anthony to “give it to me, baby” as Anthony waves the gun around. She doesn’t know how very literally he plans to do that, both with his male “weapon” and his literal weapon. The French may call the orgasm “le petit mort”, but Anthony is going for the big one. All of this aligns with an observation I made several months ago. There was a scene in which Anthony fantasizes about telling Macy what he did, Macy acknowledging his power over her, and then Anthony basically compelling Macy to succumb to him. It struck me that he doesn’t fantasize about her joyously and willingly wanting to make love to her, but about *forcing* her. Today’s scenes were the real-life manifestation and culmination of those fantasies. Anthony doesn’t just want Macy, he wants to force her to be his. Macy unwittingly tapped into this dark desire several episodes ago, when she intuited that the key to securing Anthony’s confession was to trick him into thinking she, too, was turned on by violence. That his murdering Ivana for her would make her swoon. This theme, twisted as it is, has been deftly set up and woven consistently throughout the Macy/Anthony scenes all along. It’s what elevates the storyline above some of the other B&B dross. And it’s what makes Sally’s role as Macy’s protector here both appropriate and somewhat humorous, in a Victorian old-school kind of way. Mama Sally must protect not only her daughter’s safety, but her virtue.

What a great analysis! 👏I agree wholeheartedly with your take on these scenes - the whole storyline of Anthony/Macy has been a kind of veiled r a pe reference, which was foreshadowed the very first time that Anthony met Macy and tried to do just that. Even when he was trying to romance Macy early on, he always tried to bypass her cons ent (designing swimsuits that would disappear, making her sympathize with him by inventing dead cats that weren't there, never listening when she told him no), and the games he is playing with her in this episode are no different. Everything she does in this episode, he makes her do against her will - even telling him that she loves him. And the 🔫that Anthony waves around is a perfect metaphor because that too is used for forced pen e tr a tion. I also think you have a great point about "protecting Macy's virtue" in the Victorian sense. A lot of emphasis has been made on the notion that Macy _mustn't_ sleep with Anthony (I wrote a separate essay post on it in episode 2089), that she mustn't give herself to him, or "sell her soul to the devil". And this is also reinforced by Anthony behaving kind of like Dracula in these scenes (always kissing and touching Macy's neck) - Dracula _also_ having strong undertones of s ex and r ape against the backdrop of Victorian virtue.

@@annieo6527I really like the parallel with vampires - excellent point! Anthony certainly was an emotional vampire if nothing else, sucking all the good out of Macy’s life!

Now I've watched 2088 episodes, watching several episodes every day. Bold and the Beautiful - 1995 (S8 E337) FULL EPISODE 2088 These episodes are from 1995. Why do I have to wait for a new episode every day here on KZbin? Since they are from 1995, I will never finish the entire series as long as I live with only one episode per day.

Connor asked Dylan what Jessica's mum is like before asking her out but Dylan hasn't met her and doesn't know it's Maggie. James asked Maggie out but Maggie says she is already seeing someone Dylan). The one person who should be asking my wife Barbara out is me - her Chinese Husband Matthew See. Maggie says that Dylan is three certain men rolled into one. I admit I am none of those three men. All I am is a Chinese man who is in love with this beautiful white woman Barbara. Jessica brought up the subject of honesty and I have been very honest in how I feel about my wife Barbara and I love her so much and I always will. Matthew See Barbara Crampton's Chinese Husband
