The dialogue from both Brooke and Thorne is so ridiculous and so at odds with their character histories. Brooke saying she finally has something worth fighting for and Thorne saying he's finally found what he's been searching his whole life for -- these sentiments have been expressed in the past (and were more true) _about Ridge and Macy._ It's ludicrous to hear Brooke and Thorne repeat those sentiments now about each other. The only way one could buy and root for their defiant romance is if you're a fairly new viewer. @Annie has written about how Brad seems to be trying to change the show's reality or rewrite its history, and it's not the first time he's done this. For instance, when Ridge and Brooke were married (after Taylor's "death"), Brooke frequently referred to both of her kids as Ridge's and none of the other characters ever corrected her and the show was careful to keep her out of scenes with Eric so their history together was never invoked. Brad was trying to whitewash that history to make Ridge and Brooke seem less icky as a couple and now he's doing another reset here with Brooke and Thorne.

@@babs4848 yes - in this case it seems like the writers are trying to make us forget Thorne and Macy's history (especially jarring when we are actually _watching_ that history in S8 right now). *The battle of the narratives* The two narratives on the show are really starting to col lide now. First there's the "old narrative" - the truth as seen by Stephanie and almost everyone else on the show. Then there's the "new narrative" - the truth as seen by Brooke and Thorne. Stephanie literally _can't handle_ the new narrative. She doesn't remember it, and it mustn't even be mentioned around her. Eric is trying to uphold the old narrative for Stephanie's sake, telling Thorne how wrong he is and that his relationship with Brooke must end. Brooke, on the other hand, is fig h ting for the new narrative. She has Storyteller ambitions as shown by her frequent statements of "nothing/no one can change this", but at the same time she keeps saying that she didn't "set out" to do this, indicating that she is controlled by her _id_ rather than her _e go._ Brooke's conversation with Katie is significant because it is a way for Brooke to almost break the fourth wall and speak directly _to the viewer._ Katie is, in fact, like us. She is an observer who has a lot of doubts about what is happening, and Brooke is trying to win her over. Brooke even addresses the elephant in the room - her past relationship with Eric - and explains how her relationship with Thorne is "different" (even though it actually isn't), in an attempt to obscure that connection and make this new romance more viable. The contrast between the new and the old narrative is perfectly summarized in the dialogue between Eric and Thorne, where Eric says that Thorne _thinks_ he's in love, and Thorne replies that he _knows_ he's in love. Both these statements can't be true at the same time, and this is at the core of the tension between the show's two parallel narratives. They can't both win.
@NewYorkNick060711 ай бұрын
Great analysis Annie! This has everything I love -- competing narratives, id vs ego, storyteller ambitions. 🙂 I like your point about Brooke being caught in-between, trying to drive the plot but also taken along for the ride. That dichotomy has always been true to her character: she's always been active and trying to make things happen, to be as "bold" as Stephanie, but she also believes in Destiny.
@annieo652711 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 thank you Nick! Another thing that occurred to me after reading your post was how, in keeping with the "double narrative", Thorne and Brooke's romance both _is and isn't_ in character. Taking their character histories into account, it _isn't_ plausible that Thorne and Brooke would actually be in love, but it _is_ in character for them to _mistakenly believe_ that they are in love, when in reality it's all about Ridge and the Forrester family (since this is a pattern both of them have followed in the past - Brooke with Eric, and Thorne with Caroline and Taylor). This is a strong point in favor of the "old narrative" - it is the only one that keeps Brooke and Thorne somewhat _in character._ This read explains Brooke's "love" for Thorne better than it explains Thorne's feelings, however. Brooke is naturally rebounding because she _can't have_ Ridge (it's like when he married Caroline). Thorne, on the other hand, _already has_ Macy (even though when he first kissed Brooke it was a reaction to him believing that Macy wouldn't marry him). He really has no reason to fall for Brooke - unless she actually _is_ the "Siren" of Greek mythology.

The cost of Brooke's happiness is _very high_ here, and a lot of innocent people had to pay that prize. Macy genuinely loves Thorne and was engaged to him while Brooke pursued him. She has done nothing to deserve the pain Brooke's and Thorne's relationship will cause her, and she is not even being given enough information to deal with the situation. Thorne believes that Brooke is in love with him, and when he realizes he was her second choice, it will be too late and he will deeply regret their relationship, and how it cost him the woman who actually loved him.
