Stephanie's reference to a "pound of flesh" (Merchant of Venice) is another Shakespeare reference to match Brooke's "milk of human kindness" (Macbeth) in episode 1569. In this case, Stephanie is comparing Brooke to Shylock, the grasping, vengeful merchant who wants the respect of a higher social class. And Brooke compared Stephanie to Lady Macbeth, a highborn woman who possesses the strength and ruthlessness of a man. Interestingly both characters are villains who have been reinterpreted more sympathetically by modern readers.

I may be reading too much into this, but I wonder if there may be a parallel between Macy's coffee and Sheila's new job - "deceptive honesty". When Sheila told Eric about how Brooke had discussed a job with Sheila, it was really a tactical move - using honesty to cover up a lie. By confessing that yes, Brooke and Sheila had talked about Sheila getting a job offer from Brooke, Sheila comes across as "having nothing to hide" - which allows her to _actually_ hide the fact that the job was her idea, not Brooke's. When Macy behaves suspiciously while drinking coffee, and Thorne "catches her being sober", that reinforces to Thorne that Macy has nothing to hide, allowing her to _actually_ conceal her drinking better since Thorne now trusts her more. I am not quite sure that Macy did in fact act as if she had spiked her coffee on purpose just to allow Thorne to discover that she hadn't - she is not a "chess player" and normally I wouldn't credit her with that kind of devious strategic thinking. But maybe the alcohol has activated some otherwise dormant parts of her brain.

I think that they intentionally make sheila "smart" that's why she gets away with all the lies and deceits. The only two people that could have exposed her for who she truly is - her mother and Lauren - "failed" to do this and because of this they are her enablers, in my opinion.
