Shows usually make it too common for the step parents to be horrible, but both of my step parents have been so supportive and calm with me when I got in trouble. I think it’s what both of my biological parents needed in a partner since I don’t think I would have been able to understand and love my parents as much if I didn’t have my step parents to mediate the situations. I wish there were more portrayals of step parents being like that instead of the default “you’re not my child” act.

It's so good how this show is able to present characters as one dimensional but then completely flip your expectations around. I also thought Hilling was gonna turn out like a classic envious second queen, but she ended up being my favorite character in the show.

We went to her killing Bojis mom and unleashing criminals and an immortal soldier onto a kingdom in which said soldier brutality attacked the civilians to "well you had a sad backstory so it's alright we're gonna forgive you and on top of that you also get marry the kid who you've been manipulating ever since you met him because this a fairytale like show". I love the show but I would be lying if I said the last episode was 10/10 Edit: she was also responsible for Dorshe (idk how to spell his name) losing his eye and leg

What I love about Ranking of Kings is how it makes you think because it’s based off a fairy tale the story elements and characters are cliche and 1-dimensional, and it throws those tropes on its head. In reality they are complex and their actions have many dimensions.

@@miyamotomusashi6450 what's misleading about the animation? Pretty sure anyone with a brain can easily tell that the animation is very good. Unless you're talking about the art style, then those people who didn't watched it because of the art style is dumb. I have probably seen 1000+ anime in my 15 years of watching anime and one of my biggest problem with it is, the lack of creativity for the art style. So when i saw the art style of ranking of kings, i immediately fell in love with it and i said to myself, "finally another unique art style in anime". It's also one of the reason why i fell in love with mob pyscho, it's because of the unique art style which turn alot of people off too when it first got released.

Yeah, that's the cool thing about this story.... you can't judge most characters by first impressions alone. They have layers to them that makes it tricky to predict their true agenda. It's most engaging, isn't it? 😉

Ranking of King shattering your expectations at every episode : check Healing being best mom : check. I love how it's when she jumped out the window to rescue him that everybody is like "ok, she cares". The way I see it, she shushed Boji when Daida was still a baby because Boji wouldn't know he was being noisy. Babies are very sensible creatures and needs calm. And she might think it would be too much of a burden on Boji's side to become King, especially with how bad everyone is thinking of it.

Honestly when i first watched this show, not a single one of them i suspected of being bad other than the mirror. Not bebin, the Queen, domas, etc. Because what they're doing is reasonable and understandable. For example the Queen is royalty so she's acting and doing things like one, and it's also one of her job to make sure to teach bojji how to act and behave like royalty. Bebin is defending the royal family from kage because kage is from a clan that specializes assasination. And he's also daida's royal bodyguard so he'll stick with daida despite him disagreeing and not liking what he's doing. And domas is obviously on bojji's side but bojji's lack of strength and him being deaf and mute prevents domas from being 100% in support of him being king. None of them are against bojji being king it's just that what preventing them of supporting bojji being king is his condition and his silly antics that they thought does not fit a King. The mirror is the only one i saw as truly bad.

The queen said she wouldn't be able to see both Daida and Bojji so he's not going to hurt his mom. Her powers are only healing so she isn't a witch. She isn't wrong as a mother and queen to believe Bojji can't rule because of his disabilities.

Not every Isekai isn't the same as before, some new series are different and more creative. Uncle from Another world, Mushoku tensei,The Time I got reincarnated as a slime are good examples.

I don't like isekai too, but I recomend "Isekai Ojisan", is a satire. The protagonist has a 30-year-old uncle who returned home 15 years after disappearing into an isekai, but his life there was horrible and now he uses his powers in the real world to be a youtuber

Ousama was one of the great things at the tail end of 2021. Along with Heike Monogatari. edit: i think the same about isekais btw. not even liked SAO which kickstarted this uninspired trend. and yeah, anyone that has read fantasy novels and watched isekais knows whats the difference. isekais are derivative crap. berserk feels more westernized and I think thats not the sole reason of its success of course (the artwork is out of this world) but damn if I know this is a big reason for that "genuine" feeling while the isekai subgenre feels overused since day 1. isekais takes whats gonna kill the anime industry, which is the building upon copycats, and used it to fuil itself to the next level. Because at its core the problem is manga (because lots of anime is adaptation) authors building solely upon manga tropes and manga stereotypes without much regard for the real world with real people. We end with unbelieveable shallow characters, plastic worlds, pseudo philosophical dialogue which points at the lack of inexperience of mangakas as human beings. I think lots of anime adaptations are made by guys that live and breath anime/manga culture but outside of that they seem very naive and unexperienced. Its like a snake eating itself by the tail. Thats why that abused moment when a character starts a soliloqy spilling 'wisdom' feels so cringy as hell and nobody in its right mind should apply that ill adviced lessons. How can they pretend to teach shit if they live in a very specific cushy bubble? And they themselves don't understand logic and philosophy themselves. The Monogatari franchise suffers from this a lot, but this faux intelectuallity is all over the place. I touched this "philosophy" subject because oh boy mangakas do love their preachy monologues! Look at Evangelion: does that shit makes sense? its pretty, animation is amazing, but its obvious its pure suggestion without a concrete message. Its carried more by its aesthetics than a clear cohesive message. Seeing the rabids fans debating this or that meaning is meaningless himself. Like watching people debating about a religious text. Evangelion is full of symbology to awaken the imagination and makes us see patterns where theres not much of any. Most manga and anime suffers from this samey samey characters, similar styles, all tropey, nonsensical decision making, etc. And I know having some works life that is fine, but when its in everywhere then we have a problem. Its not surprising some animators were left in dispair as they saw the shake that Spiderman into the Spiderverse represented. It shattered their worldview and that allowed for some of them to understand onto what they are standing: a iron giant with feets of clay. And this was only a realization in a visual/aesthetics field. I do wonder when they're gonna realize Miyazaki's words? Its easier to recognize uninspiration in a visual manner, but abstract things like scripts? That will take them more time I fear. In such risk-adverse enviroments as Japanese industries/culture such changes takes time. Lets see what the next decades bring us. I also admitt that most consumers don't care much about the story as long as it follows certain familiar avenues. Trying different things can be intimidating for any newcomer and takes more time, because elaborating a story, with amazing characters, great character development, top pacing, cohesive themes, on point subtext takes lots of time, effort and genius. Meanwhile animating amazingly poses lots of work but as long as the directors sets the example their monkey-animators will follow suit. There's lots of digital assisting tools for animations and illustration but for writing? None. Or at least until recently with ChatGPT but thats another subject. Anyways I started rambling but I feel like Miyazaki: anything is written better when its based on real life. And over the decades the manga industry (and thus anime too) as been relying on young unexperienced sheltered men who are themsleves clueless about life, relationships and people. So when the mangakas stopped living sort of speak, and rely more on referencing and self referencing, basically feeding on the manga industry themselves, then we became invaded by this avalanche of souless, childlish ill-conceived products.
