One of the most influential Brazilian Poets, Vinícius de Moraes(the same from The Girl of Ipanema) did a poem about the Atomic bomb, called The Rose of Hiroshima, and my headcannon is that it inspired Togashi in calling the equivallent of the AT bomb in HXH's universe the Poor Man's Rose (I will put the poem in one comment if someone wants to read)

I love the theme of this arc. It's showcases the dread in the face of the overwhelming power of monsters. The arc starts by portraying the fearsome atmosphere of the first ants being the monsters. Then as it develops and the ants come closer to being humans they become even more of "monsters", as in their cruelty. Then they show the ants becoming more human in the sense that we perceive as what it means to be human. *And then finally it culminates in the most fearsome monster being humanity and it's overwhelming power to destroy anything, even the ultimate "monster".*

This arc cultivates the ants as super organisms that evolve at a rate no other species does, making the Royal Gaurd and Kings the pinnacle of all life. The main cast are fighting against threats that will eventually take over the world if they aren't defeated is what we are led to believe. Yet when It wad all said and done the King was defeated by a human creation, the nuclear bomb. One which the series goes out of its way to point out is cheap and easily made (relatively). Meruem told Netero that he was the pinnacle of evolution, and netero told him to never underestimate Humanity's potential for Evolution. In Japanese the word Togashi used for "Evolution" can also be read as "Mallice". The beginning of this episode divulging the mass degree of production, along with the mass use of this bomb capable of taking out the greatest threat the story has ever seen, further compounds on this double definition and makes us wonder about the limits of human innovation and brutality

I've seen a lot of discussion about the whole "Gon is a monster" thing. My thoughts are that it's kinda what this arc tries to portray. I mean think about how Netero looked at the end and how the ants, especially the king, are developing human emotions while we see the humans start to get pretty fucked up on how they deal with the ants. Humans are the real monsters; I believe Togashi was trying to deliver that message.

The message is meant to be more optimistic and hopeful imo. “If even the evil baby eating Chimeras can evolve then maybe humanity can too”. People focus too much on the nihilism of this arc. Humanity is what changed the Ants for the better. We are messy creatures capable of destroying the planet we live on but we are also compassion incarnate. Isn’t it funny that the word “inhumane” which we use to describe deplorable acts literally means “not human”? It’s against our nature supposedly.

That Youpi and Gon parallel is interesting but actually anyone could go through that kind of emotion when the thing you value and love the most is attacked, every other emotion fade when your only focus is that one thing you have to do at all costs... everyone can become a monster in the 'right' circumstances and it's not hard to empathize with this kind of feeling SPOILER Killua will experience a similar feeling when Alluka's life is in danger... family bonds don't matter anymore
