I think you misunderstood the point of them getting condemned criminals, it's not that they're disposable (though they are) it's that they are "loyal" (as in they know they'll be killed if they don't do it so they aren't likely to betray the Shogun) that goes out the window if they don't have the executioners tho

Hi Carson, I know you said you didn't want an explanation but you do actually need one because you're wrong about this. The Yamada Asaemon, who are a real historical clan of executioners, are being sent because they are also viewed as expendable. In traditional Japanese culture beheading criminals was seen as impure (which was a really bad thing). As a result, even though they serve the Shogun, the Yamada Asaemon are ronin not samurai because they are willing to do a task any samurai would view as beneath them and as unclean. They were not given the status of samurai (as a result officially the Shogun is not recognized as their master -so their impurity doesn't rub off on him). That's why those kids were stoning Sagiri in the flashback. The Yamada Asaemon are outcasts from normal society. Even though they are highly skilled, the authorities regard them as scum and expendable. There's actually a classic manga about the Yamada Asaemon called Samurai Executioner which is by Koike and Kojima, the team who created the legendary Lone Wolf and Cub. Anyway, the point is that the Japanese audience would be expected to know that so there wasn't any need to explain it. Hope that helps.

Lindsay is absolutely correct. Gabimaru is absolutely notorious criminal. That was why the Shogunate tried soany things to kill him and finally got an Asaemon to do the job😂. When he was caught it could be that the information about him has been made public.

The reason why there was this fight in the show I think was that the shogun wanted to see a fight to the death. The narrative reason was so they could show Sagiri's doubt and fear of killing, and showing the Gabimaru way of "handling" the killing.

It’s not a question why they’re sending asaemon with the criminal, question is why you send seemingly disposable criminal cuz you don’t care if they die or not AND asaemon with them, at this point just send asaemon which you assume stronger than criminals anyway since they’re suppose to kill them if they misbehave and have them find it without added tension of having to look after criminals

i know you said to not explain ig LMFAO but as a non-manga reader i did not really think they wanted blood to be shown. this was more so to show that the shogun is not the most “holy” or “good” person that some might think. even in the dialogue he says something like “i always wanted to see a bloody brawl” not the exact quotation but you get it lol. even one of the samurai people said “what’s the point” so i think the author is ‘indirectly’ telling you that this is not just a reason to show “blood and gore” but to establish that the shogun is not a good person but he’s leading a whole bunch of samurai’s lol. plus, i think from what is shown in the anime so far it seems this authors style is a more indirect teller and not ‘im going to give you everything in summary and explain everything to you’ and it will be shown through dialogue of characters. that’s just how i viewed it though lol.

Well, this is feudal japan. Since the shogun word is law, and the shogun has this selfish desire for the elixir, then he's probably not thinking logically. He doesn't care, he's clearly dumb. I just think of Gabimarus appearance being known in that world as being similar to the John wick universe. The killers know of each other, but that doesn't mean that civilians know what he looks like. Killers know killers
@ryanpalyo8181
@ryanpalyo8181 Жыл бұрын
9:30 I wouldn't consider this to be iffy logic. The criminals want to live and escape, so if you just drop them off on the island and leave there's no incentive for them to look for the elixir. They'd either do nothing or try to build a raft and leave on their own. At that point it'd make more sense to just execute the criminals and put together an elite unit of warriors to send instead, but as you said they don't want to risk to many important people. Hence the small group of Asaemon. You don't want heinous criminals to escape back into society, so you send a small group to watch over them, that are strong enough to survive the criminals themselves and the potential hazards of the island.

I didn't interpret the Shogun as thinking that up on the spot at all, I think it was clearly planned like this from the beginning have 10 Asaemon take 10 criminals, find out and test who is talented and please sadistic shogun with a battle, they already knew few criminals who were notorious, but hey why not find out who else is good and if the famous ones are worth the story, Shogun just told the guy to hurry up with the deathmatch, kinda shame that so much of the discussion is overtaken by a misunderstanding I feel.

The story is set in the Edo period, which had 200+ years of peace. As you can imagine, the value of a warrior is low when there are no wars to fight. Hence, as great swordsmen as the Asaemon clansmen were, their lives didn't amount to much if it meant securing the success of such a high important mission. Besides, they need people to put a leash on the criminals or they run away with the loot

Love your videos mostly guys. Just one constructive piece of criticism: Give the show a few episodes to explain itself before thinking they're burdening you to figure out. Things will explain themselves in time, that's what makes anime interesting :) I feel if you consume the content for the first 3 episodes of any show you watch and then start predictions and speculations, you'll be making informed guesses which would make the viewing experience for all us watchers much better :) Hope you guys keep up the good work

I had the same criticism watching this episode. In Blue Lock, for example, the main characters in the story have the title card things showing their name & rank. The fight in this episode was just another way to show who the main characters of the story are instead of just listing them from a file, getting a title card, etc.

Some of the people who read the manga said that it would have been better if they were in this episode for ep2 and 3, or even the middle of ep3.We might have gotten a little more information that way. Of course, I'm happy that the anime carefully depicts the emotions of the characters.Also, the battle royale of these death row prisoners is because of the stupid general 😂 Gabimaru was also reluctant to go all the way to Edo. Your impressions are genuine impressions of enjoying the story☺️ I use a translator, sorry.

If you've watched the next episode you should probably know now why the Yamada clan were chosen to accompany the criminals. But if not, there is a reason why, in where it puts an extra layer in the motivation for the Yamada chosen for this mission, and it's revealed in episode 3 Also, there's only 5 criminals who have red seals. They planned for 10 criminals to go to the island. Meaning that even if they expected all 5 red seals to be going, they needed 5 more criminals to choose from. Lastly, y'all do remember that in episode 1 that it started off with an unreliable narrative that gets revealed by the end of the episode in Gabimaru's back story, right? That really should've set the expected precedent for people going forward, in that to not take everything at surface level and be suspicious about things being stated by characters just at face value. Like, come on, now. If something doesn't seem to add up, it might not be a plot hole, it might be more unreliable narratives. 😒🙄😏 This is actually a common writing tactic used in many storytelling mediums. ....but I guess maybe not used ENOUGH in shonen, that those who watch a lot of it, can't fathom a shonen story to diverge from the over saturated writing formula that most common battle shonen rely on

The "explanations" you seek are all coming, some of them very soon. The Hell's Paradise manga didn't become one of the Dark Trio by being the kind of mediocre Shonen you so clearly dislike (and I am with you on that). Though I am seeing a pattern of react streamers being unreasonably critical of this show (not you specifically). Without going into spoilers: 1) the Shogun clearly does things purely for LOLs, he is not concerned about logic or efficient allocation of personnel or resources 2) the Asaemon have a very good internal reason as to why they want to be involved, as you will see later 3) the Legend of Gabimaru is a very intentional marketing strategy by Iwagakure (as you will see later) .... so no, he is not famous because he doesn't know how to conceal himself. This show does not waste time, things move at a very brisk pace, and many things that are mysterious now are clearly explained later. So don't be in too much of a hurry to criticize this or that for not being explained RIGHT NOW.
@gacktcbiz
@gacktcbiz Жыл бұрын
And your discussion at the end: It's actually very realistic to show that a major government project can be wasteful and poorly managed. The Shogun's chief retainer even thought so himself. The author WANTS you to know that the Shogunate is being stupid.

@@kittykat896 Exactly. Some of these criticisms from react streamers leave me scratching my head. Are we even watching the same show? And a few react streamers are so concerned about "this show better not be another typical Shonen" that they are completely missing the fact that this show is exactly what they say they want (ie, not a typical Shonen). And as you said, all this should have been abundantly clear after Ep1.

I think if you see how the scenery is set up by the shogun it is pretty clear nothing has been thought out properly before taking action (not the story itself but the people in it that hold high positions. I mean, you see something beautiful, think it's paradise and then go there for the Life Elixir. Yeah, sure buddy. Maybe they don't even care not only for the prisoners but the executioners too and they think that they have bulls, oil and fire, enough to kill all of our criminals). Well, enough rambling by my side.

I mean the Shogun could have 100% had this planned out, there was only 1 boat and 10 executioners. id assume the samurai around him had no idea, hence why the one called it stupid. It was more than likely just sick excuse to get rid of death row inmates, and to see the 10 red seals in action. I can 100% understand why you guys would think that though.
