The BEST part of this, is the manga is already finished and its relatively short so if this does well it can be done in 2-4 seasons. Unlike the big ones that try to go for as long as possible and have weird filler and stuff. And you're right, he broke out of his restraints subconsciously to try and defend himself cuz he knew it was real.

the first manga chapter was incredible, one of the best first chapters I've read in awhile tbh. Fujimoto's (Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch) assistants are all amazing; Endo (Spy x Family), Kaku (Hell's Paradise), Tatsu (Dandadan) are all incredible manga and I highly recommend them in print even if the anime end up great because the art is just that good.

Fun fact: the author of the manga this anime is based was previously an assistant to the mangaka of Chainsaw Man. This series is a great Battle Royale/mysterious island-esque shōnen. And it finished with a very strong and solid ending.

Also, I think people don't understand how significant it is to be someone's assistant. They're basically one notch below the author. They do a lot of the drawing and some even have input on the story at times. They're way more than what we consider an assistant to be.

I know they're gonna love the next episode and all that's to come... seriously I couldn't be happier with how my favorite series is being handled so far. Some historical bits for anyone on YT that's interested: The name Yamada Asaemon itself comes from a real historical clan of executioners from the family line of Tokugawa Ieyasu's mistress. Tokugawa Ieyasu is the shogun whom the Edo period, aka Tokugawa period, is named after. After Tokugawa Ieyasu and Lady Chaa's son disgraced Ieyasu (and his favored elder brother), the son's chief retainer, Yamada Yoshitatsu, committed seppuku. The Yamada family became ronin and Yoshitatsu's great-grandson, Yamada Sadatake, adopted the name Yamada Asaemon when he became a sword-tester for the government. His descendants carried on the service and the name for at least 8 generations into the Meiji period. Gabimaru comes from a village in Ishu. This is a shortform for Iga province, which is historically famous for being an origin of ninja and ninjutsu. Many ninja were trained in this area, even for use by the shogunate. Actually, Hattori Hanzo (I believe Roshi mentioned him in the uncut on Patreon) is from this same province! Sagiri mentions heading to Edo. This is actually taking place close to the end of the Edo period, before the fall of the shogunate and when Edo turned into Tokyo in the Meiji era. This story is likely taking place somewhere around 1840-1850. For historical reference, this would be right before the Civil War in the US, Britain has just occupied Hong Kong, and things like stamps and photographs have only recently been invented. For anime reference, it would be roughly 60 years before Demon Slayer's story is set! She also mentions it's "past the Ryukyu Kingdom." This is in reference to the Ryukyu islands, which were not yet under Japanese rule. As such, they actually have a very distinct culture from what's traditionally "Japanese." Okinawa is probably the most famous destination here. They're spread out southwest of Japan's mainland, and end close toward Taiwan. Somewhere between the two is where our mystery island is located.

Really incredible first episode. Explored mc psyche really well while giving cool execution facts (which sets up the support character who only executes one very honorable way) and the animation of that fire ninjutsu was awesome. Plus it introduced this mystery of a cursed paradise. I think the first discovery of the place was like they never got off the boat they just saw it was there and went back to report (miraculously surviving ) or maybe the shogunate just assume cause he sent people to look for a beautiful land and they came back as flowers that they found it.
