Bolens mower would not start- fixed

I picked Up a a bolens mower off market place That has been sitting for years, and this is the process I took to get it running again

Thanks, this is good to know. I've been using this mower for the last 12 years when I picked it up at Lowes as a refurb. Doing everything I can to keep it going. The cheapest new ride on in Lowes near me is $3000!

Really thankful I found this video. Working on my dads riding lawn mower and it's exactly the same as yours. My dumbass didn't take a pic of the carb linkage so I didn't know exactly how it connected on the choke. You had it in view together and saved me lol. Thanks!

nice video I'm in Old Hickory got the same Mower mine has been sitting under tarp for about three years...got interested in it again so untarped it and like your aired the front tires pushed it in garage, change oil, took gas tank off clean it inside and out and shes good to go...didnt know if you notice your head lights even work, anyway nice job

My 38" Bolen made a loud popping sound and now it's not running any more. It's 13 years old and they want to charge me almost $700 to fix. Watching this video trying to do it my self but my head hurts. Lol

Popping through the carburetor may be valves or timing

Just cleaned my son's bolens carb but it's a newer model with the jet issue and needing a kit. after putting it back together it was pushing fuel out the exhaust and fortunitly not starting. The starter turns but stops. thought it was the battery but bypassed it and ran the jumper directly to the cables and did the same thing. the gear on the starter was stuck at the top so shot pb blaster on it and worked it by hand till I could get it up and down. blocked off the fuel line and removed the carb to test the starter and finally got it turning good but stopped again. probably could clean it and get it working again but will by a new starter and carb kit to rebuild it. I also saw a video on these carbs that shows adding a oring to keep the jet from not seating.

Needs a new needle and seat, that is why you had fuel in the exhaust and actually fuel in the cylinder causing hydro lock--this is bad because it cannot start and because the fuel will seep into the crankcase and dilute the oil. If you don't want to go to the trouble, a new carb is often the same price as a rebuild kit (and that is crazy). However, these new carbs are often made in China and may not be as good as the old one (new carbs are often strangled by EPA regs and are not as adjustable, they have fixed jets, etc). A cheap work around to a bad needle and seat is to install an inline fuel shutoff valve. When you are done mowing, let the engine idle and then turn off the fuel so there is no longer any fuel trying to flood the carburetor and then let the engine keep running until it uses all the fuel that is "downstream" of the fuel cut off. Let it die of fuel starvation and then you are good to go.

wow, your right, Ill tell my son to pull the plug out and drain what fuel is in the cylinder out and shoot some 2 stroke oil in there and spin it. Great info if that is it. may not need a starter after all. thanks

Take some jumper cables, run one to ground on the battery and one to the starter bolt(expect Sparks) and see if it turns
