Bolex 16mm Test - Kodak Vision3 250D - Full Roll Unedited - Spring Break

A roll of 16mm footage I got over spring break with a Bolex H16 S. Used a reflex zoom lens, but the camera itself is non-reflex. This was my first time shooting with any sort of film, it was a great experience and felt very rewarding.

my test films came out overexposed with 250D...so I'll be using a filter and matte box for the next filming session...you did very good!

What light meter were you using?

i'm using the Bolex EL with a built-in light meter and a Taylor- Hobson telekinic 2" lens late summer afternoon, the light on the subject maybe too bright. I bought an f4 type filter to compensate for a too bright a light. I'd soon be sending it for processing and will find out if that solves the overexposure issue. @@finnbenischek3170

Beautiful footage! Some shots look a bit hazy, it's probably some fog inside the lens, but otherwise it's awesome. Great eye for compositions! I presume that the skewed shots are on purpose. The slow motion waves near the end are absolutely gorgeous. 16mm is such a great format.

Thank you! Yeah it’s a big zoom lens that I was shooting on so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something with fog in the optics, although the outer glass looks fine. I always wondered why mine looked slightly washed out in comparison to some other footage, that could be why. The slow mo was really fun to mess with!

@@finnbenischek3170 Some beautiful shots here! Tripod use also great. You need non-RX lenses at least below 50mm because they have a different flange focal distance taking into account the missing viewfinder prism. Could be the reason for the haze on the wide angle/normal focal length side.

Thanks! It was scanned in 6.5k edge-to-edge resolution by Nicki Coyle at the lab “the negative space”

I love it man! I have a Bolex H16 Reflex, with box, lenses, rifle stock mount and more that I haven't had the chance to use yet. Who did you use to develop this reel? I'd like to know so I can start planning on filming with mine. I also have a really cool 16mil Kodak Turret. It's another great cinema camera ready to film. Great footage. I'll give you a follow. Reflex zoom with dog leg ?

I’m not sure what you mean by dog leg exactly, but the zoom lens has a separate viewing tube thing that comes off the lens itself that allows me to see the frame exactly as it is, reflex style

It's funny how people go through extreme lengths to make digital look like film, only for it to look like a half baked version of actual ungraded film, which is beautiful 😅

Lovely! One thing I don't get is: 100ft of film is around 2,5 minutes, this is a bit longer, but also the last 40 seconds here is this slow-motion footage which needs at least twice more frames per second, so how is this possible? 🧐

Believe me I was as baffled as you as to why this could be when I got the scan back. Perhaps it was scanned at a rate slightly below 24fps? This could have extended the total run time by some time. But also since the higher frame rate at the end is slowed down to 24fps (or whatever it was scanned at) you don’t actually lose any run time by shooting slow mo. As long as you actually slow that footage down it should be the exact same amount of run time as shooting in 24fps.
