My favorite fish. Lots of personality. I have a homicidal Angel fish, and even it thinks the Bolivian Ram is cool. I have one in a 39g with a large Angel, Bristle nose, bunch of Assassin Snails and a team of Zebra Danios. The Danios were a problem at first because those savages would not let anything sink to the bottom. So I mixed up the food so that it would sink at different speeds. That way while the Danios were busy at the top, other foods would make it to the bottom. Great video!

This clinches it, this will be my centerpiece fish for my 65 gallon community tank. I mostly keep small tetras like embers and neons, along with green fire tetras and 5 cochus blue tetras, so a large fish is out since it could eat moat of them. My water is fairly soft and my ph is about 6.8. My tank is seasoned, has great filtration and fully planted from side to side and even has a good amount of water lettuce on top. Against my black background and black sand, and all the plants, it should look amazing.

Nice vibrant colors. I find Epsom salt to be a good remedy for the pop-eye one . After trying to hold several Bolivians in a 40 gallon tank, I have realized that the rams on the bottom of the hierarchy tend not to handle the stress of dominancy over time. They'll start to waste away from the bottom up of the pecking order, by becoming emaciated and eventually dying.

Thanks for the great video. We are setting up a 55 gallon tank. Plan on using sand, amazon swords, anubis, drift wood, heater set around 76, canister and hang on the back filters. Also have some fake plants for the time being until other ones grow out. Looking into what other plants I could get away with. Might also build some hideouts using broken up ceramic or slate tile. The question I have is stocking. I feel I have a grasp on what I'd like to do but would love input. Here's what I am thinking. 2-4 Bolivian rams, 4-6 panda cory and 12-15 cardinal tetra.
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
That will be a nice mix and should work great in that size tank. You may want to increase the temp to 79-80 degrees F for the cardinals, the other fish will handle that just fine. If you haven't already bought the filtration, you could probably get away with one or the other. Probably won't need both, unless you are just looking for redundancy if one breaks, which isn't a bad thing. : -)

Hey I love the channel! It's very informative. I currently have a planted 40 breeder with a bolivian ram and I was wondering if it's possible to add a male apisto to the mix? And for the bolivian rams and apistogramma, should they be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups of their own species? I think I found an exception. I bought a full grown female Bolivian Ram and she has been peaceful and not bothering the other fish, guppies, mollies, otocinclus and honey gouramis. I then bought three juvenile Bolivian Rams and she immeidately started chasing all of them around continually throughout the day. I took out the four gouramis and separated her out to another 20 gallon high and she was fine. Then the three juveniles started to single one of theirs out so i took them out and put them in with the the full grown one because the bullied one would not come out to eat at all. Any suggestions? I think the black mollies having too many fry might be part of the cause but I am going to give them to my local fish store with the fry soon. I'm hoping this will help.

So I decided we want to add some of these Bolivian Rams to our current tank, I see you said yours do fine with the gravel so I was excited to see that as that’s what we have for our substrate too. I have been so undecided because I don’t want to tear up our tank to add sand so we can have these 😳 I was about to go there though. Do they have any issues? Would it hurt to do some partial sand in our tank? (We have a 75 gallon long currently holding a bristlenose plecostomus, 3 mollies, 2 guppies and 1 harlequin rasbora-- we lost some fishies from Ich awhile ago and the tank is back to being stable and cleared so anything I don’t have to do to disturb them too much is a plus).

Yep, should have got a 20Long and 4-5 Bolivian Rams. I got 1 first to try in my 20 high, seemed great so I got 1 more cpl days later...well that didn't go well...the what appears to be male Ram (point on under belly by anal fin) continuously charged the smaller Ram, that appears to be female (no point on the under belly by anal fin) not allowing it to reach substrate or plants. So I put the smaller Ram in with 6 Black Neons, in a 10 gallon temp. To my surprise they actually did well🙂, and were schooling together. Couple days ago, the larger Ram still in 20 High began charging EVERYTHING in tank lol. So I did a switcheroo and put the calmer Ram and Black neons in the 20 High, and temporarily put the larger Ram in the 10 gallon with 2 Tiger Barbs (they began fin nipping the black neons). Obviously just a temp solution until next tank upgrade, but the small Ram still schools with the Black Neons, lol it's really neat to watch. Thanks again for the species highlight 👍

I have tried frozen brine, I have to remove it from the tank the next day. I have tried small cichlid sinking pellets, have to remove them the next day. I have tried flakes, blood worms (once). I never see these fish eat. What am I doing wrong? What else is there to try. Live baby brine is not available to me, nor do I have the means to grow them myself. Any suggestions?
@PrimeTimeAquatics4 жыл бұрын
Is there anything else in the tank that could be scaring them? Maybe high light? You could try feeding them without any room lights on except the tank light and walk away (across the room very still). See if they come out and feel comfortable eating? There is always the chance they could have an internal parasite that may require treatment too.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I have done that low light feeding yes. I just don't see them eat. I remove any debris the next day and try a different food. Today was the flakes that I use with the other fish which is a pretty good smelling food. They do not display any type of sickness at all in 2 weeks. I am going to be ordering xtreme for all my fish and hopefully they will get excited about it for all the hype it gets. :) I thought at first that they were intimidated by the busy clown loach, that have since been moved to their intended tank after the QT. These fish are technically still in QT. Someone suggested a beef heart food though I hesitate on that suggestion. Not because it's wrong, but because I am not sure that I trust any beef product, including for myself. These fish are quiet and shy. I suspect that they do eat something, I am just not seeing it. They are not losing any weight by the look of them.

We are going try to breed GBRS would you recommend putting almond leaves in there? We don’t mind the color from the tannins. We also have hard water. I haven’t seen anyone put these leaves in with GBRS it the Bolivian rams. I know GBRS are hard to keep. We have those drift wood sticks and will be putting live plants in there too.

You can certainly do that. I've had a really hard time keeping them healthy in Chicago water. For breeding, you may have to bring the pH and water hardness down a bit with RO water. Let me know how it works out!

I had agression problems with my Bolivian Rams, they actually chased away my kuhlii loaches and other fish from their areas. I moved them to another tank and was adviced to feed small amount of food three times per day (I previously only fed once) and that seems to have calmed them down.

I have mine (I only have one) in a 10 gallon tank and he (not sure the sex) seems to be doing just fine. I've only had him since Oct. 22nd. He has rocks in his tank and some (fake) plants, and plenty of hiding places. I am having a hard time getting him to eat, though... I've had an Oscar before that got to be about 7" and many other kinds of fish, but I've never had a cichlid (besides the Oscar) before this one. My boyfriend and I are gonna upgrade him to a 29 gallon after I move next month

My husband has a 55 tall. Water pram is 7.6 ph,ammonia o, nitrite 0, nitrate 20, temperature 80, live plants 10 glow tetras 10 white clouds 5 emerald Corydoras 3 Bolivian 1 gbr 3 glass cats One of the Bolivian rams is looking lathargic, not eating and is hanging by the sponge filter. Do you have any thoughts what this could be? I can only think maybe not enough oxygen.
@PrimeTimeAquatics4 жыл бұрын
Maybe if he's breathing harder? If not, fish will usually isolate themselves when they are sick. You could try to isolate him and try a little general cure? Medicated flakes often help, but not if they have gone off food.
@kristenwinter81574 жыл бұрын
Thank I thought that might of been the problem but I didn’t see gasping and was just dumb founded. The water was fine. I did isolate him. When I put him back the Bolivian rams was hitting him on his side so now I’m thinking it might be aggression and earlier I think he was just hiding by the sponge filter. I put him back in isolation. Thank you for the advice. I will be looking for the medicine flakes. And will get general cure tomorrow.

I'm super late to the video but I was curious as to how I should keep the ram or Rams, I have 12 silver tip tetras and 8 sterbai Cory's and I wanna have a centerpiece fish so I looked towards the Bolivian Ram. I was wondering if I should keep just one ram because of aggression towards the cories should the pair breed. So in the case of that community should I just keep one or two or three?

Hi how's it going I've got 4 Bolivian rams and I've got a pair that have been trying to breed in my 3 foot tank I've already got a divider in the middle of the tank and I'm just wondering is that the best thing to do or should I take the divider out

With a three foot tank either may work. The divider probably isn't hurting anything.

I'm thinking of adding either 2 or 4 of these to my 50 gal community tank. Is it important to get pairs of male and female, or doesn't that matter?
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, in a 50 you can probably get away with either combo. If you want to see fry and get a pair just be prepared for them going into protect mode, which might be hard on the other fish. If you wind up with two males it might be good to set up line of sight blocks so they can both have their own little area. Thanks for watching!

@@PrimeTimeAquatics we have a 40 with a group of pearls that we would work as a backup for a pearl and I've got a 20 long that could house a couple of Bolivians if they pair off, so I have a backup plan in those regards. Based on your experience would you suggest adding them all as juveniles if possible? Basically a 4 foot tank is my limit and a sevrum centerpiece is the main hope. I wouldn't be upset if it ended up being a single specimen tank, but I would love for him to have tankmates.

I have a pair of blue rams in a 35 gallon with Dwarf Puffers, Khuli Loaches, Borneo Hillstream Loaches, and Amano Shrimp. They are desperate to breed, is there anything I can do to make their eggs more secure in such a mixed tank. The only other tank I have free is a fully cycled but tiny quarantine tank of 15 litres. Only a few tadpole snails in there at the moment.
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
You could try leaving a "night light" on. Something very dim, but would allow the rams to see potential threats and chase them away. That might help with the eggs, but I think the dwarf puffers will still get a lot of the fry. You could also try tumbling the eggs in a egg tumbler and raising the fry in a separate tank?
@deannesherriff32476 жыл бұрын
I’ll try that, The puffs might be a threat, but I do feed mostly live food, which I raise myself, so I could put in more food and cross my fingers!
