Some German exchange students came to my school when I was in 6th grade, they too were of the same age 10-11 years old. I still remember during recess, these exchange students were standing near the ground. And almost every kid of my school was rushing towards them with a piece of paper to get their autograph 🤦🏻‍♀️ at least a hundred kids gathered around them. I’ve always seen Indians never being proud of our regional languages or Hindi for that matter. We’ll go crazy over a foreigner speaking a few words in Hindi. I’ve learnt Spanish, French and German and they’re so proud of their culture and language. To live in one of these countries it is mandatory to learn the language, NOT because they don’t know English but because they want you to immerse in the culture of the land. P.s my french teacher asked me how to say goodnight in Hindi, “Shubhratri” which we don’t even speak anymore. It’s just sad.

The thing with most of Indians (myself included) is that they can read/write and understand english but struggles to verbally communicate through it. But at the same time comunicate in Hindi fluently but can't write or somewhat forgotten their own mother tounge. If it makes any sense 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, there are places like that I guess. And you (as in people in general) should be proud and happy about that. The kind of happiness of celebration that hugging, jumping and shouting out loud would give you, "Congratulations" is never going to give you the same. I come from Assam, from the capital city of Guwahati, which is an urban area by the way and yet a lot of people speak very broken Hindi there and they don't care what anyone thinks about it. My father himself is very fluent in English, but speaks broken Hindi, while some people who have command over Hindi don't have it for English, and yet I'd tell you, personally as well as objectively, that people there are some of the best company you're ever going to get.

India is an exception with respect to the language cuz there is so much language here ( every region has one) so for the sake of communication , government choose English as the medium ( if they choose any other , it will be shown as biased decision ) . It's the people who put English as a thing of privilege and higher standard .

Yeah, the feeling of self defeat has permeated the populace extremely thoroughly to the point that they accept their apparent inferiority as a fact. For example, most people in Kerala/Tamil Nadu oppose Hindi vehemently yet they gladly accept English. This only works because they accept Hindi speakers as equal or inferior to them due to a variety of reasons. To be fair, Hindi is a trash language as well. Sanskrit is the most appropriate language for a Lingua Franca. Yet, I'm sure the same people (and others) oppose Sanskrit due to similar reasons. Yet when it comes to English, there's nearly zero opposition (from the elites). Heck, I'm sure if German was to be adopted today, there wouldn't be a lot of opposition either. The language isn't important. What's important is who is represented by the language i.e people whose skin is white who are accepted to be superior by most 'Endians'.

Shwetabh, I am so glad you brought this up. I am sick of Bollywood films portraying the English language as being superior. We are living in the 21st century and yet there are still the same old garbage being shown in films. Films like Patiala House, Namaste London, Veer, and many others have one thing in common. The need to compare Indians with the west. It begins with an Indian being offended by a westerner and then he magically "defeats" the westerner in I made a good decision in avoiding Bollywood films long ago.
