January 21….. Bolo walks into Namm. No one is there. Just empty booths. For the space of 5 minutes, there is only an empty silence. Then a crowd noise begins to slowly creep upon the building. I'm gona say this again: It's all about less clicks and more features in a DAW based system, people seek and want these days - especially amongst these young kids. I was invited to a convention after NAMM last year. This guy was giving some mixing and mastering "tips" to a group of students both in Audio and Flim. One female student asked a very interesting question; and that was - why Pro tools feels so heavy. I'm not gona lie, I'm going on 20 years' experience working in PT . . . I feel that at times.
@BrianStephensOfficial16 күн бұрын
At 14:25, there's a way to do exactly what you're asking. Highlight the tracks you want to add to a Bus, right click and choose to put them In a Routing Folder. That will make a Sub Bus for those tracks that you can process with plugins, have Sends to route to another bus (like a reverb or delay), and because it's a Folder Track, you can close it up if you don't need to see those lanes/tracks and clean up your Edit Window.

You sound like a certified pro tools user or operator my friend I completely my pro tools 101 and 110 courses at Berklee and was blown away at the feature I had no idea was in pro tools. Here is the uncomfortable truth..pro tools requires a higher level of skill and work to master.. many people who use PT and even for a living never get deep into the Daw like those who pursued it to the certification level..
@BrianStephensOfficial15 күн бұрын
@@leftofcenter4 I’ve never taken a certification course, but I’ve been a working, professional engineer & producer for over 25 years. (That and playing drums are my only jobs) Been using Pro Tools since the 4.0 days and been working almost exclusively in PT since 10.0 (when they finally got a Summing engine that sounded identical to Nuendo. I work in Pro Tools Ultimate (used to be PTHD) every single day. There’s almost nothing it can’t do and often do faster than other DAW’s but yes, it requires a deep dive. (Does that make it better or worse than other DAW’s? Who knows) As far as the production tools side goes (i.e. extra soft synths, drum machines, loop librarians, etc), maybe Logic (or other platforms) comes with a ton more of that stuff built in, but I don’t rely on them as much as my third party products (Native Instruments, Arturia, EastWest, etc) A stock piano sound in Logic rarely sounds as good as NI, Ivory, or any of the other 3rd party options. (And you know what sounds better than them all? A REAL piano! But I digress…😉) If you’re a home / bedroom producer working on your own personal stuff, use whatever works for you to complete your music. But on the professional side of this industry, you have to be completely comfortable working in Pro Tools. I mixed two songs for a paying client in PT yesterday and I’ll do two more songs tomorrow. We ported all of his raw tracks from Logic (which he had already tried to mix himself). When the client saw how much more I could do with mixes in PT, he was floored. Can a seasoned, professional engineer or producer get professional results in any platform? Sure. It will probably just take longer. Any pro mixer who’s had to “punch up” someone else’s mixes in Ableton will agree with me there. Any of us that have been doing this for our primary income for decades have the ability to use almost any platform and get something that sounds great. A long time ago, we just chose Pro Tools. Anyone wondering why Pro Tools is the “industry standard” just needs to do a quick Google search for “Sound Tools” & Digidesign. They’ve been in this game since Macs had a monochrome screen.

Every program has its strengths and weaknesses. It all boils down to your workflow. No one on your page or any where in the industry use the exact same gear, plug in sets, DAWs etc. That's what makes every producer and engineer unique. At the end of the day even the young cats looking for their lane will settle down in their work flow. The main thing that makes Pro Tools the industry standard is that is the software that most records are finished in. Because the Mixing and Mastering workflow in Pro Tools is still beast mode.

Bolo - I’m with you - another downside to Pro Tools is its screen resolution is 1920 x 1080. It looks terrible on 4K displays! When I got my first MBOX with Pro Tools 6 back in 2003, it was a major highlight but today it just doesn’t feel “pro”. I’ve been a Logic user since 2002 and it’s got (just about) everything you need to create and produce - I’ve been on Ableton since v1 and so has that - same with Cubase that I’ve been on since the Atari ST. I just can’t get my head around it. I agree with what you’re saying. For Pro Tools to be “pro” it has to be at the top of the tree - the best of the best - and I’d like to see Avid developing their own devices rather than bundling 3rd party software with it. It feels like Avid just bundle a plugin with PT just to fill a feature gap. I still like Pro Tools but it’s definitely lagging behind the competition, that’s for sure.

Pro Tools may have been the industry standard before do to the fact there were less competitive options available at the time. Because the commercial studio industry has changed and there are many home studios and small studios that have popped up they've looked to an affordable way to make and record their music the other DAW's like Studio One are dominating because of affordability and the many features included. In actuality industry standard is becoming a moot point because at the end of the day the consumer doesn't care how its made as long as they enjoy the music and it has good sound quality. But on the home studio and small studio front, the other DAW's rule.

I use Pro Tools for recording and mixing only. Processing plugin support is great. The audio editing features that are already there are great. Of course, more would be welcome. As far as producing, sequencing, and arranging goes, I prefer using hardware. I sequence the hardware via midi then track it out into Pro Tools. Once it's in Pro Tools and I decide I want to add another instrument on a new track, I can always do that. Whenever I'm ready to track vocals, no problem. So yes, for me, Pro Tools serves as a tape machine, mixing console, and effects rack all in one. With that said, I can appreciate Ableton Live having a superb warping algorithm and Cubase/Nuendo having some excellent midi features regarding sequencing because I've used those DAWs in the past, too. So, I can definitely vouch for those as well. If I had to use a DAW to sequence my hardware instruments, it would most likely be Cubase/Nuendo or Ableton Live, or perhaps both! I don't have much experience with the latest versions of Studio One, but I've always heard good things about it. If Pro Tools had Ableton's warping algorithm and Cubase's comprehensive midi features, that would be SWEET and absolutely welcome! And yes, stability should be an absolute MUST for any DAW software application, especially Pro Tools! And I agree, the bus routing in Pro Tools could use some improvement.

You can automatically assign busses to highlighted tracks via a menu inside the mix window or the edit window. Just gotta dig in a bit more. This is what you can do: 1. Highlight as many tracks you want to route together, say three kick tracks you want to be summed together. 2. Once highlighted, press: Shift + Command + Option + N, and a dialog will prompt you to where you want to send these tracks to. Either a Basic Folder or a Routing Folder. 3. When selecting Routing Folder, you can mark the checkbox that says Route all to new Folder Track. 4. Pro Tools will automatically create the Folder, the bus, which will be named as you name the folder and bring them inside the folder. Another way you can do it without folder tracks if you wish to is to: 1. Highlight the tracks you want routed together. 2. Right-click on either track and select New Track. 3. Pro Tools will automatically give you an Aux Track as the option for routing. 4. Once you've selected the width for that track to be (mono, stereo, LCR, etc) and given a name to it, Pro Tools will create the aux, give it the name you've written, and route the tracks together. These are little hidden things in Pro Tools that you can discover either by testing as I did or reading the manual which I also do from time to time. ------ You can drag and drop tracks from the Finder directly into the Track List and Pro Tools will automatically create it inside the session and will follow the width of that track. I do agree it would be cool to being able to do certain things that other DAWs can do such as undo deleted tracks, plug-ins, sends, etc. Dragging audio from tracks to empty spaces and a new track being automatically created, better sampling like Studio One is adding lately, mix recalls, plug-in manager, and many other things but hey, there are already multiple things that can be done in Pro Tools that could arguably be easier to achieve in other platforms, but Pro Tools is as capable of performing some of them as the aforementioned. Great vid in all! Pro Tools is GOAT as well as other platforms in my opinion. Whatever makes you stay creative, it's worth investing your time and energy into.

The misconception about "industry standard" leans more towards the "in-the-box" realm and digital age. PT still caters very much for the Analog heads who own multi-million-dollar studios - it pretty much still excels in that category. However digital pretty much carries the industry today -- these kids dominate the industry with how sonically their tracks sound running in-the-box. Thats the difference.

Hey Bolo, whats your thoughts on Gelo song "Tweaker?" Everything about that song is "dated" according to the experts yet its the most popular song out now. I think he pretty much ended the whole "dated" debate. Whats your thought?

I am pretty sure you can move an audio track to another track while making a new track with that moved clip in PT. I feel that maybe Avid need to do a complete rebuild of PTs or many have a pro tool Plus version with all the production features added.

Thanks for the info. What in your mind is the best overall daw for vst's , etc. in the box plugins that will give you the industry standard sound?

Aye, I have somewhat of a random question. I’ve been a (no pun intended) “Avid” Apple computer user since I started producing over 20 years ago! I recently built my son a gaming computer and once I started getting into, it ended up loving it! What do you think of building a custom computer vs Apple?

When pro tools' feature set is on par or better than Logic and or Cubase, will be when I will refer to it as "THE" industry standard.

The reason you’re getting a lot of people coming in with FL studio and logic Pro is because they’re going to record in studios that really can’t afford good gear and quantity plug-ins and a quality daw but at the end of the day, people send me sessions also from other programs and I still bring all of them into production tools and I understand what you’re saying about full production I don’t do full production. I only do mix master and recording. And I’m a pro certified engineer I love all of your videos and your content and I think that people can use whatever they want as long as you’re good at it.

Logic has taken over everything. It’s complete. Permanent updates. Amazing. If Ableton had decent sounds and synths and amp sims and stuff it would be the best thing ever- but! I just got logic 11 and it is unbelievable.

I think there are levels in DAWS. I think it's the same as Hardware... Workstations, or Midi Production Center, or Music Production Centre, etc. MPC 3000 is not the same as a 4, 2, 60, 5, X or Maschine etc. I own PT, Ableton, Logic, MPC software, and Luna. I have used all Daws except Bitwig. I have most of the hardware. I primarily use Ableton for production which ends in Pro Tools. I can do everything in Pro Tools though; pitch and time are on each track. It's just not easy if you don't know your keys or theory.

I was first introduced to Pro Tools at Play Ground Studio in Durham, North Carolina. I had been a long time Ableton user and messed around with Logic a few times. Overall I just thought its was OK. Not bad but I didn't see the same features like the others DAW's. Would I use it again, sure. Personally, I haven't had the opportunity to meet Bolo but I appreciate every thing he brings to the community. I'm a subscriber on a different channel.

Love your content brother. Mixing in logig to protools let me say their is a sound difference. 😆🤷 iv a,b numerous times does it matter, well if your serious about your final mix & master than every bit counts. İ give up on this topic 😂 let everyone find out for them selves your right about the bus routing aux if your new its brain surgery. İn logic its create a track stack drop the tracks you want and its that easy. Peace✌️

💯 I been using studio one and logic for the longest time. Pro Tools is meh… never real been wild about it. Not that it’s total 🗑️ just never thought it lived up to the hype 🤷♂️ I appreciate your honest opinion and view point on the topic. I think it’s a reality Avid needs to look at before the competition runs over them.

I heard you the whole time. Pro tools is more for engineers so is Harrison Mixbus and Luna. Nothing wrong with that. I actually like to be creative, track and comp in Logic. Then put on my engineer hat to mix in Mixbus. I don’t go to pro tools because I feel like I get more power for my dollar with what I am trying to do.

Cool vid.... Thumbs up! U missed one feature. That Studio One's stem separation feature is fascinating! I am excited to give S1 a shot! I think the key in your rant is.... Artists are bringing their sessions to you in different daws! And out of the 10 sessions, if 9 were ProTools, then it could be said that ProTools is the industry standard meaning if u r moving studio to studio as an artist, u can be comfortable that the studio will have ProTools. Buuuuut if u r seeing more than 50% of your sessions from other programs, then maybe for today's music industry, u r right meaning that ProTools is no longer the industry standard whether we are talking features or simply portability in terms of sessions. As for features.... Avid is not likely catching Presonus' S1! The best thing that Avid could do at this point is buy Presonus and buy Reason Studios and tell the government that it is not a monopoly because Logic, Ableton Live, FL Studios, Audacity, and Reaper are still competing. But ProTools is not catching S1 at this point. S1 has a video playlist from 2016 where they are intentionally letting ProTools users know that S1 is an upgrade in terms of features over ProTools which helped me be comfortable in giving S1 a shot for my next album. I do not think there are enough feature upgrades that Avid can do to catch S1. I am actually a Reasons user. I use it to make beats. I am still not advanced enough to mix vocals in it. My album, The Journey, was completely done in Reason. But my preference for my work flow is.... 1. Reason to create the beats and mix and master the beat and export out the .wav. 2. ProTools to law vocals. Mix vocals to the beat. But now I will be using S1. 3. Master in IK Multimedia's T-Racks Max. I am not ready to Master in S1 just yet. I want to see how I like laying vocals in it first. In either case... Cool vid....Happy New Year! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ In either case... Cool vid....

The real problem here is that people expect and want every Daw out there to do exactly the same thing and have the same tools. I mean, when Pro Tools arrived it was a daw for recording, editing and mixing. The same as when FL Studio arrived it was a Daw to make beats only. Obviously with time and user input and demands these programs have changed towards the needs of the user. But, nike doesn't need to make shoes like adidas and adidas doesn't need to make shoes like reebok.
