Reasons why I disagree: 1) Bolt actions, unlike semi-autos, can be affordably chambered in magnum calibers for long range precision shooting, offering an overmatch ability that an AR-10 doesn't have. 2) Bolt actions represent an affordable, lightweight, and easy to maintain firearm for anyone spending long periods of time on foot. 3) While not as true as it used to be, bolt actions are generally dollar for dollar more accurate than their semi-auto counterparts. 4) They are great suppressor hosts especially when paired with subsonic ammunition.

@willham1427r vice versa people literally used bolt action as battle rifles for decades not saying that it might not be better to have a semi auto in some instances but it's like a doorstep does it look fancier yes it does but a brick would be fine and serve the same function my point being that bolt action high caliber rifles are just as deadly in the right persons hands because let's be realistic when you fire a shot you should hit your target and if you don't then when by the time you chamber the next round and put your sight in the next target it'll probably be a second not immediately after it doesn't really matter because of the time factor that you will have to sight in again anyway no matter what your shooting if you don't you won't hit your target you might sounds scary randomly popping off but if inaccurately there is no point.

To get a semi auto that shoots sub 3/8ths MOA is pretty expensive to say the least, plus no way you could get that with factory loads. You could basically buy a higher end bolt gun with a buttery smooth action, hair trigger, and high quality scope for the same price. For general "combat accuracy" though, even a run of the mill semi auto will work just fine out to 400 yards, with a higher end one being effective out to 800. Bolt actions (generally) really only outclass semi-autos past 800 yards, and in weight. However, if all you have access to is a standard bolt gun, they can still be quite effective with lots and lots of practice. I can fire a stock rem700 decently fast with acceptable accuracy by keeping my thumb and index on the bolt and firing with my middle finger.

A good bolt action rifle can be used for a lot more than just hunting but only if you are willing to put in the time and effort required to get good with your bolt action. I do realize that you will never get the same high rate of fire as a semi automatic rifle but in many situations you would be fine. I have an AR15 and AK47 that I’m very proficient with but I also have a Ruger Gunsite Scout 308 that I’m also very proficient with and if push comes to shove I wouldn’t hesitate to use it but that’s because as I stated before I put in the time and effort to become very very proficient with it

"In most situations you would be fine" Both world wars called, and they called you a tard and hung up. Bolt guns are extremely inferior to off the shelf semi autos for combat, and that's been the findings of every professional military since the 1940s. Even longer if you're considering the "build the squad around the machine gun" came about in part because volume of fire beats "individual well placed shots" as discovered from 1914-1918

Glad your brought up the gunsite. The 308 scout rifle was a genius idea that is extremely versatile. Even more so now with some the amazing red dot sights and some dedicated scout rifle scopes available. Either red dot scout scope or both in quick release mounts so if damaged you can easily go to irons. 308 is more than enough gun for pretty much any North American game short of the great bears and with proper shot placement would do in a pinch for even those and is a proven man stopper. It’s light weight easy to carry compact enough to work in a building but is easily capable of 300 yard shots and in some situations much further. Removable box magazine makes reloading and carrying spare ammo easy. I have a custom scout rifle built from a Howa action that’s my truck gun. It’s just at home for SHTF or if I get out of work early during deer season and have time to do some still hunting or sneak into the deer blind. Col Jeff Cooper thank you for a great idea.

Correct. Each gun has its purpose, which is why I have 3 close range guns (2 pistols/1 shotgun), 2 intermediate range rifles (.22lr/5.56) and one long range rifle (.308). The British mad minute, required soldiers with .303 Enfield to be able to fire 15 rounds at a target 300 yards away in 1 minute and hit it. The record was 38 hits in 1 minute. To be clear, the "Mad Minute" record is almost certainly not real, probably just a bit of army folklore. Professional competition shooters with significantly more accurate, straight-pull guns that cost tens of thousands of dollars haven't been able to replicate it at 300 yards, and the modern record is still only 39 shots at 200 yards.

Add a laser optic to that compact bolt action rifle (16 inch barrel), such as a Holosun open reflex red/green dot sight, load using AR magazines if you are able to (i.e. Ruger American Ranch), and become familiar with the action by way of constant practice then you're all set. Great alternative idea. Tip: add a 2-point sling on it as a bonus for off-hands carry.

Yep. But get and learn to use a GI loop sling. I have a American Ranch 5.56 and use a red dot. Great set up.

@@Gunblastz not everything has to be an AR, and yes that is still a great platform & very popular in the U.S.A. I love AR's too. It's the creativity and ingenuity that counts, while borrowing components from a great weapons system to form something different. I bet someday in the future (perhaps in 200 years) a brand new revolutionary rifle platform we don't know about yet will surpass all AR or AK variants, much like the antiquated flintlock system dominated for about 200 years in the past before something else was invented to surpass it.

@@leadpilled5567 sorta like former Col. Jeff Cooper's concept on the "scout rifle", except my example is a far cry from what he'd approve. Specifically, it has to be chambered in.308 Win, needs iron sights in addition to an optic for variable zoom magnifying, and be a specific weight (I can't remember).

Exactly you can have the 556 in a 16 inch barrel and jump up to the 6.5 Grendel and a 20 inch barrel and you just had to buy another magazine that matches the rounds.

Bolt actions were just a simple to make repeating action (less complex than lever action) that also allowed for stacking instead of tube loading that is better for pointed bullets as well. When gas guns like the M1 grande came out, they started down the specialty path. The main advantage they have is that they are more consistently accurate with tight MOAs when put against gas guns because the follow up is much more deliberate shooter behavior wise, and there is only movement from the recoil vs. the moving mechanism of a gas gun. Gas guns can be very, very accurate, likely to a point where it won't matter as much in a real fight when your more focused on suppressing your enemy. Bolt actions are killers, gas guns are barkers(yes they are still deadly lol dont get it twisted).
@Masterche18

Oh another advantage was being able to have the rounds on stripper clips too instead if single feed into a tube magazine

These Tacticool kids have limited scope of experience. AR platform: cycling issues mixing up different magazines, gas block/tube obstruction, direct impingement dirty carbonation. Can’t reload milsurp steel case. Heavy to carry. Bolt gun: simple system reliably cycles another round.
