How to make and facilitate the "Bolt in the Bottle" for team building.

There is actually a puzzle toy like this. You have a flat bottle, a nut, a screw, a cotter pin and a wooden ball. You use the ball and the inner side of the bottle to unscrew it!

Because the thread on the nut and bolt are "right handed" gravity will cause the nut to loosen when the nut is on the bottom. If the nut was on top then gravity coupled with the right hand thread will cause the nut to tighten. This whole scenario would work in reverse if the thread was "left handed".

I have done this before. But we have 2 bolts, 2 washers, 2 nuts. Holes are drilled loose so bolt can move freely. It is a challenge but pretty simple once you get the hang of it. And we do not use any wireto put the nut on.

lol..All you need to do is hold the wood dowel and spin the bottle. The nut will thread on or off depending on the direction you spin the bottle

Ditto. In fact, with a strong enough and cleverly built electromagnet that surrounds the bottle, the bolt could be tightened *tight* in a matter of seconds.

+Furyrulez To put it together, I was thinking of the magnet trick too -- I would use a strong neodymium magnet. The magnet wouldn't turn the screw if the screw head is wedged into the wood hole a little bit first, the way he showed in the video.

I would suspect a long flat-head screwdriver would be easier to turn the nut to screw it on. It would be flat to provide more tension on the nut surface to screw it on. Plus, the screwdriver would not be as flexible as a paperclip.

A more easy way is to use a magnet to spin the nut, i prefer neodynium magnets.

you cheated with this so bad, it is not necessary to use either the paper or the paper clip, you just need a small cork ball inside the bottle, I made one of these myself and it works fine without cheating.

How to get the bolt out: Step one: Grab the bottle Step two: Smash the bottle Step three: Unscrew the nut with your hand Step four: Pull the bolt out He never said you cant use your hands to unscrew it or not to smash it I followed the rules didn't I :)

loop an 1/4 wide elastic over the nut that will reach out the opening ( 4 inch ) once it is started and like a tracked vehicle , spin on the nut ...faster

You can't. If you are thinking you can turn the nut using a magnet keeping the bolt stationary, that won't be possible. Both nut and bolt will become magnetized and will stick together. Well, you can try with a steel nut and aluminium bolt.

nice video. i find it amusing that so many are cynical about time invested in creating games. they all would surely invest an hour of time at an expensive dinner of adults trying to resolve. for some reason knowing how to make something seems to debase the entertainment value of the end product. not a positive statement about human nature.

I did it with a lock-nut! :p
