- Short History
- Built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton as a fortified residence.
- Richard was a Knight of the Shire. In 1371, he became Lord High Treasurer and Keeper of the Great Seal.
- In 1378, he became Lord Chancellor but resigned in 1380 when the government collapsed. His successor was beheaded though, and so he took up the position again, only to be removed by the king in 1382. After this he dedicated himself to rebuilding Bolton Castle.
- It is still a mystery how the family acquired its wealth.
- An Astronomical Clock has been described in the courtyard during the 16th century.
- In 1536, John, 8th Baron Scrope supported the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion against the religious reforms of King Henry VIII. He gave the Abbot, Adam Sedbar, sanctuary in the castle. By consequence, John had to flee and the king ordered Bolton Castle be torched, causing extensive damage.
- After a few years the damage had been repaired and John was allowed to return to parliament.
- In July 1568, Mary, Queen of Scots, was held prisoner at Bolton Castle for six months under the watch of Henry, 9th Baron Scrope.
- The castle was not suitable for housing a queen, so tapestries, rugs, furniture and more were borrowed from local houses and nearby Bernard Castle.
- Mary was allowed to roam the local countryside and even go hunting. She was even allowed to meet with local Catholics for which Scrope was severely reprimanded.
- In 1630, Emanuel Scrope died without an heir. Bolton Castle passed to his eldest illegitimate daughter. She married Charles Powlett, 6th Marquess of Winchester and 1st Duke of Bolton.
- The castle is still owned by their descendant having never been sold.
- Today the castle is a tourist attraction and remains one of the best preserved Medieval Castles in the country.
- The site includes Archery, Falconry, a Garden with a Maze, Tea Room, Shop, Restored Rooms and stunning surroundings. They also hold events and weddings.
