Bored of Lame Tool Reviews? Let's have a look inside the Cuisinart Hand Mixer. This is a departure from the usual fare of workshop tools. Instead we'll look at how poorly kitchen gadgets are built. We'll also attempt to repair some broken bits of plastic. This delicious goulash will be served up with a heaping helping of technical details, heavily spiced with salty shop vernacular. (Some say it's an acquired taste.)

Eratta: Mike (from mikeselectricstuff !!!! *insert we're not worthy clip here*) pointed out that it's not a resistive voltage divider, but likely some current sense resistors. The voltage divider must be capacitive, debatebly one notch less crusty than resistive.

Hi Chris back in the mid 60s around 50 years ago I worked for the Joseph Lucas Company in Australia. They outsourced many products to the automotive industry. They had developed a chrome vacuum deposition process onto plastic back then. Using high vacuum deposition was used in several other products like aluminium onto metal reflectors for headlamps but the metal deposition onto plastic was used for a few body trim parts if I remember correctly.

***** oh btw if the plastic bits dissolve in acetone you can make acetone glue to melt the parts back in. i've done that for 3d prints that have broken on me. and also hydrogen peroxide clears up yellowed plastic really well

IIRC the acetone thing works on ABS. Maybe other types of plastic, but not all. Acetone vapor is also used as a technique to smooth out the ripples in 3d prints so that it doesn't look like pixeled ASCII art from the BBS days. Really ghetto example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmPPnml8qsZ0jas There's a goldilocks amount of smoothing you want to do. Enough to round the edges so it doesn't look like Pacman but not so much that it starts looking like cat lady Jocelyn Wildenstein.

Years ago we had a cheap-o mixer that quit working- it had a speed up/down button on top that had a bad connection. I took it apart and removed the membrane button and just dangled the wires out of the hole. You arced them together until you got the speed right, then unplugged the nightmare machine when you were done using it. Worked like that for years... lol

Mr AVE, I feel the need to tell you, it actually is rather easy to electroplate plastic parts. It does require a few more chemicals and a couple more steps, but it is possible. I used to work for Tennessee Electropting, one of the largest plater vats in the world existed in that building before the UAW strikes helped shut the place down. The plater plated nothing but plastic parts for almost 60 years before it shut down. The plastic is washed really clean, and then it is etched with a peroxide mixture. After which another chemical is used to aid in the plating of three or four coats of copper. After the first few layers of copper are plated on then the nichrome was applied in the same fashion as a typical metal part. We plated ALL chrome grills that were installed on the Ford Focus when it hit the market. Those nice pretty chrome grills on the Ford Focus are regular old PCABS plated in chrome. Every ford truck on the road from 2001 to 2009 wore a nameplate badge that I myself was responsible for manufacturing. They were made from abs, plated and then pad printed for the lettering. I'm sorry I can't better explain the plating process is was mold 2 lead man, and the only time I actually stood on on top of the plated when when my parts had a defect that only showed up during or after plating.

Just a quick suggestion, if you ever get the browning effect from the bromine in plastic, go and have a look for something called "RetroBright" It is a process using Hydrogen Peroxide to undo the browning effect. I have used it a few times and its pretty effective, even here in less than sunny ole' England! Cheers, love your videos.

No duty cycle mentioned on that whirly thing? Here most of those kitchen machines have a duty cycle of only a few minutes - Its often only mentioned in the manual, the machine itself will go on until it burns...no timeout/thermal shutdown.

@theoverengineer 9 жыл бұрын
Stefan Gotteswinter Duty cycle in North America is typically associated with pulse-width modulation in synthesizers or welders, but the math is there, and you are right. They want the owner to make it fail and buy again? Owner`s manual, yeah, ... about that ... let me start writing a new one.

I've had a similar issue with a completely different mechanical object and i heated up sewing pins and jammed them into the plastic which gave them enough spring to do the retention job. Somewhat similar to the horseshoe bit holding the crank on the old antique roll down car window.

You have to be careful but I have had mostly good luck re-inserting screws into plastic by slowly turning them counter-clockwise with a very light pressure, you will feel the screw drop down slightly at a certain point, from there you can then safely screw it in without stripping the plastic out, it's not foolproof but it works about 95% of the time. I hope this helps you repair plastic crap in the future :P

Allen Dodge I thought I was the only people that knew that trick!! What you are actually doing is .. tricking a 'single use' screw (once in, never out) into thinking you are still unscrewing it. As soon as it drops back into the thread, it forgets that it has been all unscrewed. So it thinks you are just 're-tightening' it. Some screws are just that stupid.

That vapor metal process coating plastic has been around since 1930+- invented by fritz neumann and company. It was just for microphones as the diaphragms are gold coated. New high end microphones are Teflon diaphragm base with a gold coat. The patent ran out and now it is use it for more cosmetics rather then making super delicate parts.

Well, the solution is obvious. Hack the ends off the beaters, leaving about an inch of the ends protrubering out of the mixer body and jb weld the beater ends into their respective orifices. Hogger out a couple of brass couplers with two thumbscrews each to schlep the beaters back onto the stubs in a moderately secure fashion and proceed to beaten ze eggsens. If you want to prevent the kitchen help from losing the couplers during the dishy-washy process, reduce the number of thumbscrews to one each and use a setscrew to permanently affix the coupler at its opposite end. I come from a long line of "spend a hundred times its worth to fix it" engineers. My old man bought a desk fan in 1938 that was still on his desk in 1997. Didn't work worth a crap but it looked really good. - cheers

Sputtering deposition of metal has been around as long as CDs, and Laser Discs. Definitely not 10 years old. Also, what about those plastic model kits I used to build and set on fire 40yrs ago? Actually we did metalizing back in the 70's. The plastic part would be base coated with a paint that looked like honey and then baked. After cooling they would be loaded into a vacuum metalizer that superheated little metal clips. The metal sticks when the vacuum is realesed and then the parts are topcoated with a clear coat. Baked once again and viola. We did some of the first headlight assemblies back when large glass head light bulbs were on their way out. I remember doing anything from aniversary Brut bottle caps to matchbox car parts to even gold, silver and platinum records. Gold was achieved by adding a red orange and yellow powdered dye into the clearcoat.

My family has a 20 year old mixer that still works. It's made in a way that it doesn't need soft-start or any fancy pantsy stuff to prevent it from breaking. It's just made with the expense put into higher quality components instead of crappy electronic parts to compensate for shitty quality. For example all of its gears are metal.

It's been killing me trying to figure out why I find you SO entertaining. Really, I love your videos. And I figured it out. It's nostalgia! You remind me of a more entertaining, and certainly more intelligent version of the Red Green Show I grew up watching. Good stuff my man, And as a guy with 3 associates degrees in Culinary arts, Electrical Construction, and Computer Electronics, this channel is amazing! lol

I don't see it used very often for repairs but PCL (PolyCaproLactone) might just have been perfect for this situation, whenever something plastic breaks or needs replacing it's the first thing I try. If you are unfamiliar with PCL, it's a non-toxic thermoplastic that is workable at 60°C and obviously completely re-usable. Thing is, people usually heat it with a kettle (or a cup of water in a microwave) which means the max temp it will get to is 100°C, besides it's a pain. However, if you add a susceptor to the PCL, you can now heat it in a microwave without any water (Warning this can get far hotter than 100°C). I have had success with 2% by weight of Graphite to 98% by weight of PCL, but other metals will likely work such as iron oxide powder.

On the old, venerable Hamilton Beach mixers, the beaters were not held in place by any sort of mechanism in the worm gear sockets, but instead by an external bracket that would hold them in place. The beaters themselves didn't have a collar like those whisks, though. If you could fashion a swinging plate with two holes large enough for the whisk's shaft, but smaller than the collars, I suspect that that could hold the beaters place more than well enough to allow them to be lifted from a pot of gravy. Or, if the tool's yours now, turn it into a parts polisher, or a stain scrubber, with two appropriately sized brushes... that's my plans for the HB, anyhow. ;)

I inherit my mixer from my grandmother. She got it 1951. It's from AEG and now working for 64 years. Old crap don't have to be bad crap. :-) My try to fix would have been to heat up some steel wire and melting it in the plastic sleeve of the batter holding bit to replace the retaining thingies at the end. No idea if that would actually work...

I bought virtually the same beater a while back thinking that it would be good quality and the worm gear eventually chewed out the crappy worm gear which as you say can't be purchased. The cheap Sanyo mixer that my wife bought 20 years ago is still going strong. As you have found, it appears to be impossible to buy a good hand mixer for any price. Such a shame to throw out a perfectly good tool because a few cents worth of nylon gear or bush.

Neodymium magnet in the bottom of the whole wont keep the beater in? I mean, I know there's a reason for the different size and shape of the actual stems (to keep the wobble to a minimum by their pre-determined shape offset) but if you were able to reinforce the sleeve with an internal "J" slit on the sides (insert and push over the hump to lock it in place) maybe with a small spring or magnet to keep it from being expelled out like in the video.... Just a thought

vacuum metalizing is what I worked on at my last injection molding shop. it actually uses argon and a shit ton of kill you real quick volts. it turns a sold aluminum or stainless steel plate thats around 1 inch thick and 8 inches wide by 36 long into vapor that coats the plastic part.

I wanted a slower slow on my 5 spd kitchenaid hand mixer, which was an easy mod. speed controlled by SCR so swapped out the low speed resistor. My father has a prototype shell of a GE hand mixer from when he was making thick film resistors for their (closed) factory near crochester ny.

Thanks for telling about vapor deposition to chrome plastic. My question is this: I remember, back in the 70's and 80's, building plastic models that had chrome plated plastic parts - things like wheels and bumpers on car models. Is it possible that this technology is a bit older than a mere decade? If not, how did they do it back then?

That is easy to fix. weld a washer onto the shaft of that loose beater arm so it almost touches the body when fully inserted. before you put it on put a second washer loose on. drill 2 holes. next to the edge of the washer. insert. screw in screw so they hold down the loose washer which pushes against the welded (jbweld even maybe) washer "holding" it into the machine. you might even be able to come up with a slicer swivel 3/4 washer so you can "pivot" it out of the way disengaging the "hold down" to allow easy removal of the beaters for cleaning. either way won't be too difficult to fix that bugger.

You can electro plate plastics. They paint them with a highly conductive paint (one that contains excessive amounts of copper etc) and then the part can be plated just like a metal surface.

2001: I got a cuisinart blender. Just a few months in, the clutch (the gear that connects the motor base to the spinny part of the jar) shattered itself to bits. Warranty repair? Yes, by mailing it in... could they send me a clutch? Nope. 2009: I got a kitchenaid blender (at huge Europe markup I might add). 2014: clutch breaks, 10 minutes of googling has a new clutch with special spanner in the mail, because kitchenaid actually sells parts. (Tons of dealers sell them to end users, i didn’t even have to try the factory.) Fixed in 5 minutes once it came. And the kitchenaid chooches better than the cuisinart ever did, while making a fraction as much noise. Kitchenaid stoves and stuff may be just rebadged whirlpool, but their motorized appliances remain second to none, as far as consumer models go.
