Anecdote from someone who used to design industrial power tools. We found in the north american market we had to make our tools louder so we took the mufflers out of them (pneumatic). This actually made a lot of them perform worse but they sold better. The European models were higher torque and quieter. Also yeah, hydraulic pulse tools we really only sold for "precise" impacting torquing and for applications where a smoother impact was needed. They dont last as long as hammer impacts and dont torque as high. But they were a lot more quiet.

The M18 surge is by far my favorite impact for the kind of work I do. Decking boards, a few sheets of drywall here and there. And if your framing a small wall, and using screws, the f***ing thing is awesome. Drives and sinks the screw, without moving the stud a smig. If I need more power, I bring out something louder, but the noise difference when working inside occupied homes is what sold me on it.

I have one and to me as a diesel mechanic one of the best features of this tool is its ability to have a very wide choice of torque settings (also I see he did not use it on the highest and fastest setting, had it on 3 instead of drill,). The first setting is VERY helpful in dealing with the interiors of trucks/vehicles or any instance where the screw is harder than what its going in or securing. You still get the speed but don't have to worry about being gentle on plastic interiors.

I’ve had a chance to work heavily with this tool and the non-surge latest impact driver, side by side. The surge is definitely smoother and quieter, and even a blonde-one faster when you’re driving screws into pine. However, when working with hardwood or in automotive use with socket adapters, the non-surge is superior.

It's oddly good at breaking rusty bolts. I think it's the softer impacts with similar spin speed, makes it vibrate rust right off, and breaks 'em free. I also put in a lot of self tapping screws at work, and this does the job faster than any driver out there. It has its niches, I don't think any of those niches were intended by the engineers, but they're there.

I was slightly put off at first because it starts impacting far sooner and they feel softer, and I took that as weakness (like normal impacts when they're getting low on battery).... When really it's actually torque improvement at lower throttle... It's leaps and bounds better than any impact I've used! The more I use it, the more I love it! Side by side with other impacts, this stands out amazingly! A single 5.0ah battery can last me up to an entire week framing metal soffits for cabinets due to it's torque efficiency! This impact is KING!!!

I honestly was given one of these, and it sat in my garage for 2 years unopened. I opened it to get out the 'extra' battery and started playing with it, some time later. 6 months later I'm driving deck screws until 10pm, and let me say it is 1/3 the loudless of the DeWalt brushless, and is super smooth. I love this impact, it's my new favorite. I didn't even know it was labeled, as "surge", or was hydraulic (ish). I just fell in love with it. I highly recommend it.

The M12 Surge is by far my favorite impact driver, it’s so quiet and far less harsh even at the same volume, makes use indoor and consistent use just that much more enjoyable. The m12 Surge is 99% of the M18 performance and only 60% of the size.

The battery capacity difference is the issue. If you're doing little automotive shrimp screws that's fine, but if you're driving fastener you tucker out the standard batteries (1Ah?) real quick. If you're using the M12 3 or 6 batteries You might as well be using the M18 that point.

@@LordOfSilense because the whole point of the M12 is that it's small and flexible. The only place I've seen them used is in automotive trim applications. The M18 head is so small that there's very few places and M12 will fit but an M18 won't in the real world.

I think the 1-2-3-X is torq settings. 1 being the hardest and progressively softer. The x (I forget the actual symbol Milwaukee uses) is for sheet metal screws. Apparently it senes when it’s sunk and stops so you don’t strip it out. All the same speed though.

The sheet metal setting is indicated by the picture of a screw, it's not the best picture but if you know of the feature it makes sense. It's designed to be used with #8 or #10 sheet metal screws into 20-28ga steel, commonly used in electrical or HVAC.

Special use is exactly what it is. Use an impact driver on metal framing in small spaces all day and you don't have to wait til you're 50, you'll be yelling at your wife about what you think of the gravy before you're 30. Old houses with wood that's cured up rock solid and little insulation are almost as bad. Folk who do it more often than me also say they split the wood less, because the impact curve is an actual curve, and not a sharp peak. I've got the old-fashioned mechanical impact. I try to avoid working in caves.

In a massive heat treat facility with 30 plus forklifts (running booms) there were literally two forklifts had forks on them. A little 2000 lb unit for trash and the maintenance forklift. I've been using the surge m18 fuel for about 3 years now and it never failed me once. Still runs like new. The quick connect chuck is still tight and not loose like Makita and dewalt gets. I also dropped it in water fully submerged once while working in the trough of the infinity pool I let it dry out for a day and it still works till this day. Also the hydraulic mechanism makes it perfect for drilling and tapping 10-24 and ¼-20 holes for screws. The soft hydraulic hammer along with some w-d40 or wax keeps the taps from breaking.

I also own a lot of snap on, Milwaukee , matco , impacts and electric ratchets. I own a few surges and a few freaks. The surge is as fast and sometimes faster. The freak gets faster with larger fasteners. for wood framing projects using 3” #10 wood screws I personally prefer the surge. The more quiet performance is also a big bonus in my opinion. When I need more than that I’m going up to an impact wrench anyway

I'm an electrical contractor and love the surge impacts. The quiet factor is fantastic, especially in people's homes or businesses. For most fasteners it has plenty of power and having used both for years, I feel is more controllable too. In a race to sink a row of 3" lag bolts it'd lose, it wouldn't be grossly night and day but it'd still lose. But, the fact that it's way quieter and more controllable more than make up for it in my opinion. I like the m12 version better, so small, quiet and controllable, but can still sink the occasional lag bolt. And since employees can be quite silly about hearing protection, this is also me trying to look out for them as best I can without being up their ass. Or anyone else in the room since not everyone walks around with ear plugs in.

Bought an Aircat impact years ago and while I've mostly moved away from pneumatic impacts I remember it being advertised as having a quieter operation. I think they advertised high 80 dB range but it felt stronger than the other impacts I had at the time. Maybe with it being pneumatic it was easier to make it quieter while hitting harder than an electric impact but I'll still bring it out on occasions when my 1/2" Makita just isn't doing it and I'm always surprised by how quiet it sounds.

This tool works best for guys doing light work in rafters like HVAC or commercial framing using self tappers [fasteners that don't require a ton of torque]. When you are up in a ceiling at deck level under corrugated steel surrounded by metal framing you definitely notice a huge difference with this impact vs. the others including the top Milwaukee one. You can try them next to each other and the hydraulic doesn't kill your ears with harmonics.

I own three of these. When you run a 6”+ GRK screw into LVL’s. They WILL break. The standard Milwaukee M18 impact (new model) are amazing though. The Surge is best used for standard 3 1/8 screws or less. Steel screws for roofs. Things like that. Not big lag screws though.

@@ElPants21 Ever snapped the head off a screw? That's because you're hitting it with all the torque immediately. The way a fluid coupling works is that as the rpms on the input side increase, the fluid in the coupling will fling to the outside and start to apply torque. This will start moving the output and will increase speed/torque as the coupling moves faster until it matches the input. These are used a lot in large conveyors that get loaded down with material. Upon start up, if all the torque from the gear box is applied, you'll grenade the whole works. Same principle is used in this drill.

It actually makes a significant difference when clacking on metal studs. We got shutdown because of noise in a live hospital. Brought this surge out, my personal tool, and my sheetrocker sub was able to continue building. I've run this tool full tilt driving 3in screws into Redwood, it loves it. It DOES NOT like 1/4in SDS that are too long into engineered lumber. However, the 2804 drill will drive 1/4in x 12in SDS into anything all day long. Used my 5.0a to pre-drill and the 12.0a to drive the 12in SDS. The trick is to use 2nd to get it 2/3rd the way in. Then 1st gear WITH THE SIDE HANDLE and drive them home. This method outruns the corded 1/2in impact.

A 17:10, you asked if it would be nicer to have a little tab for the screws to attach to. Do you think that is was deleted like it is to reduce vibration as much as possible? Do you think, like I am, that if there were to be a direct connection between the screw/clam shell/housing, then that would/could transfer more impact vibration to the user? After all, the main idea behind this new impact driver is to lower noise and vibration.

I was about to argue that 3db does not double the power because that seemed way to high but I gargled and what do you know, you are correct. I always thought 10 db was perceived as twice as loud and required twice the power. It's nice to find out you are wrong about something because knowing I'm wrong means I'm smarter than when I thought I was right.

10db takes 10x the power in a perfect world. Realistically, you'll quickly find diminishing returns when upping the power.

The rule of thumb I picked up was about 5 dB is the level where people can hear a difference and 10 dB sounds about twice as loud to someone. It is partly biomechanical and party perception. Brightness of lights is another odd perception thing. I don't remember the numbers for that but I do recall it being very colour dependant.

So the 10db is perceived is twice as loud thing really doesn't hold that true in practice. In the car audio SPL community we deal with actual metered DBs more than probably any other hobby. While doubling power or cone area will yield a 3db gain (in a perfect world) an audible doubling is closer to 6db.

Just want this guy to know. I bought one of these today. I went on youtube an hour ago to see a teardown. The first thing I typed was “milwaukee surge ave”. I was not disappointed. However, like half the people reviewing the tool they misunderstand its purpose. I didn’t get it for power. I’ve got a 220 ft-lb impact wrench and a 100 ft-lb Milwaukee hammer-drill I use if I want to do things fast and ram in bigs screws and lag bolts (which, now that I think of it, might explain my daily tinnitus). The surge is for doing small work carefully and quietly. I intend to use it like the old Black and Decker electric screwdriver my dad had when I grew up. I thought about getting an electric screwdriver, but the M12 Surge can fit in more places because the depth is shorter. It’s got some power, but it’s not meant to be bought by someone wanting to regularly use it for those tasks. Also consider that the viscosity of the replacement oil did not look to be as thick as the original. However, if you think about it, theoretically you could change the torque and time it’s applied over by using more viscous oil or less viscous oil. AvE should try testing the effect of different oil viscosities on torque and time-of-force. That would be something.

I have one of these for electrical work and it has been game changer on terminations small bolts. hole saws and impact drills. It has much more control on the small stuff. I will not be going back, love this driver. Note, If I was to be driving a lot of wood screws then maybe.

The textured ejector pins are used when the surface of the part is not perpendicular to the ejector stroke. It keeps the ejector pins from sliding and scratching the part on ejection.

I have the 12 and the 18. The 18 installs 1/4 lag bolts like they were screws. I love them. I rarely drive boxes of fasteners at a time so for me, quiet is good. I like the steel metal screw setting for installing flashing. No look, unstripped screws.

Have one of these hydraulic drive guns and for certain jobs like driving tech screws into roofing iron they are much less fatiguing with less noise and vibration they also have much better service life than the mechanical drive units-horses for courses.

This is what I use it for. Dont really need a driver for anything other than tek screws and unscrewing fasteners. Have the 12v version because its smaller and and can get into tighter places. Got the 18v impact in the tool case for the rare occasion i need to drive lag bolts or something.

I've got two of these now My first one went under the knife for a warranty repair and while it was getting fixed I bought the second one. I also have a 2753-20 which has a lot more power but has a lot more noise to go with the power. I was never the guy that even cared how much noise any tool made period. But I use these 1/4" drivers everyday at work and the Surge straight up spoiled me. When the first one was getting fixed I still had 3 other Milwaukee 1/4" drivers I could have used. But no I bought a surge to use while the first one was getting fixed so yes this gun is quiet and smooth Did I say that I really like it? I do

I've used the DeWalt brushless next to the Milwaukee back to back on a job (weeknight warrior). Hands down I can hear the crackle of the Dewalt ringing througout the neighborhood. I love the Milwaukee. I didn't even know there was anything fancy inside the red. It was just given to me as a gift. It's my 2nd favorite cordless tool! ;)
