Ave, would you mind looking into the collapse of the tower crane in Dallas at City Lights on June 9th? I can't find any information on the cause and would love a hypothesis from you. While there were strong winds, the collapse just doesn't make sense. I really enjoyed your vidjeo on the Seattle crane incident and I have a somewhat vested interest in this project. Thanks.

Most engineers are over ruled by the bean counters. Otherwise, we'd still have tools that last and function perfectly. Additionally, it's usually the electronics that go bad in everything before the mechanical side fails. Cheap power supplies and under rated components tend to find their way into products.

Checking in after 1 year of daily usage- I have the 1/4, the 1/4 extended, and the 3/8 versions of this tool. The failures I’m seeing are the detention ball getting weak in the 1/4 anvil and eventually falling out of the anvil. Happened twice. The ratchets still chooch like new. I beat on them hard, they get dropped, dunked, dusted, etc. apart from the 1/4” anvils, they’re perfect. Thanks for your excellent, entertaining, informative and inspiring work.

I've used my Fuel 3/8 and 1/4" ratchets a ton, cranked on them to break free 100+ ft/lb bolts, and yet to have a failure. the 1/4" is nice because the head is really small. Gets into those impossible spots.

I got the 3/8 and the long-head 1/4, and I agree! They’re excellent! I keep the 4.0 battery on the 3/8 and it runs all day long. I find that you can break loose a lot by “impacting” with it by spinning the socket 1/2 a second and dropping it down on the fastener. Gets a nice impulse without jerking the wrist too hard

I use the 3/8 version of this all the time. It actually often fits in tighter spaces than a 3/8" hand ratchet. I've piled the force on it and so far I haven't broke it. I know AvE puts the boot in on milfckee fairly often but in my view it's the best gear on the consumer market - at least here in Europe.

My impact died, and the little m12 3/8 ratchet ripped out 24 8 inch lag bolts from a deck without any complaint. Was hotter than hell but did it on one of the big batteries without replacement. Tip for getting extra starting torque is hold it loosely and let er start swinging around then give it a good grip. Easily 2-3x more torque while spinning vs at dead stop. It is a dicey game of knuckle busting though...

I don't have the 1/2" version, but i have the 3/8th version. The thing that's wearing out is the plastic casing from "reefing" on it. I can tell it's starting to get a little sloppy / loose. Other than that it's been holding up great. Also, i don't think i've ever had a switch die on any of the Makita tools at work, heavy industrial setting. It's always something different, but never the switch. Just food for thought.

@@vaderdudenator1 Yeah pretty much. It had no power. I found that i would usually have to loosen any fastener first with a spanner or ratchet first. So any time and convienince you gain with an electric ratchet, is lost with double handling tools. And it was still kinda bulky when you compare to a regular ratchet/spanner. I have had about 3 different models of the 12v 3/8" impact gun and found that a far supperior tool. At times where that wont fit, i simply use a ratchet, or ratchet spanners. I work mobile on industrial/construction/earthmoving machinery and have to carry tools into site or on to the machine. So i like to keep my tool bag full of only the most efficient and usefull tools. And the 3/8" ratchet simply was a waste of space and wieght. And wasnt near as usefull as i thought it would be when i purchased it.

I have the 1/2" and use it for building equipment maintenance. It works great for assembly and disassembly. That 60 ft-lbs is not a lot, and it's a clunky ratchet when you are in tight spaces trying to break loose motor mount bolts. Works great on tensioning bolts though, so using it to drive cnc adjustments should be fantastic.

I work in the automotive industry and this ratchet and the M12 Fuel 3/8" drive ratchet are used more often than I thought they would be. The 3/8" has a bit more torque than the 1/2" one does, but that could also just be that it spin-a-ma-things at a higher velocity than the bigger counterpart. I have yet to break anything on either of the two electric ratchets, but one of my coworkers has gone through 3 of them. The usual suspect for him is the paddle switch pin, or the circuit board.

I have the 3/8 non fuel unit for bit over 3 years. Plastic case is just starting to get a little loose, ratchet end occasionally slips 1 tooth when turning by hand above what the motor will do. Working on planes and some stints of rebuilding split rim wheels for EMB120's. Lots of life in it yet. Paddle switch and lock are still strong as day 1. Tossed in many tool bags for road trips and fallen off wing or ladder to the hangar floor more than once and still strong. Batteries still click in strong and never had one pop out yet.

Been running the older brushed one for years now. Daily use in underground mining. Haven't broken one. Did have an issue with the ratchet direction change being difficult to operate (might have had something crack in the head or some debris got in there?) but it was replaced for new under warranty about 2 years after purchase. The only thing that will break these tools or batteries are apprentices.

Finally! I was hoping you would review this and in Oct when the Milwaukee cordless right angle die grinder comes out also that. One thing worth mentioning about the commentary on the new fine tooth ratchets: Im not sure if this is a recent development but a 120 tooth ratchet I purchased about 3 months ago is a dual pawl rather than a single, finer tooth pawl. In the dual pawl assembly two pawls alternate engagement with the center gear. This allows the gear teeth on the pawls to be BIGGER but the pawls themselves are thinner. Something I found interesting anyway - my 120 tooth has taken a beating flawlessly.

Collision repair tech here. I’ve used the original ratchet @ 1/4” drive since I started the trade (9 years ago now). And swapped over to the fuel version the day it was available in Canada. The original one failed on at the head of the ratchet. One from shattering on the supports for the pawl and the other is the pawl mechanism failing ( worn out teeth. Third brushes version is now back up. In the two years now of using the brushless one, I haven’t seen or noticed any failure mechanically from the tool, but I have noticed the battery case breaking from drops. Have had the ratchet head take a direct impact from a fall at 3 feet onto concrete and was fine. The fuel version definitely has more umpf to it, but the brushes version has more stall torque to it. Hard to explain. However the fuel one doesn’t need to be charged for days. I use it day in and out, where as the brushes version, it’s every other day it need a charged pack. Thanks for the video AVE. Been waiting to see you do a BOLTR on this for a long time. I might be able to send you an old 1/4” brushes one for tear down. ( I highly suspect the brain box on this one). Just got to see what the Milwaukee service centre says.

Do not use pliers. You will grind the locking balls into the housing and it will fail. Just wiggle the square/socket a bit while turning the switch. Using pliers is how I ruined the old 3/8 ratchet.

@mister clean i gave up on milfaukee tool service after my 2nd impact return. 1st time around, bearing failure, they took 3 weeks to repair, even though they had dozens of the required bearing in the warehouse, 2nd time, the chuck was all f u kered, told em i need i new one, just sell one to me, they tell me i dont have the necessary "special tools" to change it, i hesitate a bit but let them change it, next day i pick it up, go back on the site to drop it off for my co-workers to use, we open the box, take out the drill, under the drill a note "sight light flickering, changed LED, inspected A-OK" they never even looked at the chuck, sure enough it was a no go. Needless to say, no more milwaukee power tools.

Word of caution its got max-knuckle-busting rating when tightening in aforementioned tight spaces the torque will move the body in the opposite direction of tightening once you lock that bolt up and if your not paying attention ur knuckles what hold the body get crushed...

I've had a 3/8 one for a while now. Zero issues with the tool (I'm a mechanic, use it every day, it's fantastic), it's the batteries that have failed for me. The larger 6.0Ah batteries have an issue in that the locking tabs crack where they meet the case during regular use and eventually fail.

I broke it out for a fine, dirty, 3/4 inch thread just this morning. Otherwise not as much use as you would think. I have the 3/8 ratchet brushed. It's not my go to tool. About 4 or 5 years and it's completely dirty and fine. The smaller impact is what I use when I can, and a normal ratchet often displaces the use of the milwaukee. I always feel like I'll break the case near the battery though. Or the battery itself. And with the bigger battery, you can't help but to grasp it with another hand to give it the beans. I'm really surprised I've not broken it yet. If it breaks, it'll be the case.

My guess is if you rotate it from where you naturally hold it on the end you'll easily break the plastic first. You'd need to choke up about halfway and hold above the motor if you're going to be able to break anything metal, but I'd assume that nobody is going to do that since you'd have to rotate twice as hard and it's not the natural place to hold a ratchet.

Was considering the Milwaukee but didn't feel like it would last or could handle a little bit of coolant occasionally. I ended up getting an AIRCAT 803-RW (impact air ratchet) 3 times the rpms and impact drive so don't break your knuckles when the bolt bottoms out. Been using it for a while now and would recommend.

We run a Ford diesel repair shop and battery tools like these have almost eliminated air tool usage. Over past 6-7 years our past and current guys have had at least 10 of these milwaukee ratchets, mostly the 3/8s version. The newer Fuel versions have seemed to improve on the by far biggest weak point we've seen with the non Fuel versions. The ratchet head on these wear out and then they will no longer spin a fastener, even an already loose one. I havent taken one apart myself so I dont know if it's the ratchet paws or gear is worn. I have seen the ratchet housing spread apart and I think that helps lead them to their demise. Milwaukee was really good about warranting many of them, usually just replacing the ratchet head. What we've found is if you dont use it to break loose tight fasteners and dont reef on it to tighten they last considerably longer before wearing out. Also the 1/4in model wasnt strong enough to last in the shop environment, broke multiple square ends off. With the fuel version they considerably increased the strength of the ratchet head housing so they dont seem to deflect open like the old ones. We've had a couple of the fuel ones and they have definitely lasted longer before the head wears out. To be honest for most applications I think they are built pretty well for the money. But when your tearing the top of the engine off on a modern diesel, there are a shitload of fasteners and its alot to ask for these tools to be reefed on all day everyday and survive

Yes these aren’t as powerful as an impact but the true benefit is fitting in those right spaces where you can barely get your socket wrench to click once and you’re doing 1/20 a rotation at a time. Break it manually and spin her right off. I can’t think of so many times this would have been very useful to me. Now to decide which size to buy.

i have the 3/8 older one with the brushed. Two things that stand out to me... First, keep your hand on the handle bit. People are really tempted to move their hand down to the battery to get more leverage... It's not strong. Don't do that. You can feel the thing flexing and creaking when you do it. Second, when you're wizzing off a bolt like nobody's business and the ratchet backs up into something. If it's a tight spot, you won't be able to reach the toggle to change directions. Not sure if that happens to anyone else but it's a pain trying to flip the direction with a pick or screwdriver so you can get the tool out. Otherwise it's been fine for me. Not daily use though. The snapon one is more rigid feeling and it will throw your knuckles into all the things.
