“Il Sacro Bosco” of Bomarzo, known to most as “The Monster Park”, is one of the most evocative and enigmatic places in Italy. Immersed in a forest at the foot of Mount Cimino, the monumental garden was commissioned to the great Neapolitan architect Pirro Ligorio by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, known as "Vicino", in 1552. Prince Orsini, a man of arms and intellect, cultured and great scholar of alchemy, made the work in memory of his late wife, Giulia Farnese.

The park, while clearly departing from the classic aesthetic canons of Renaissance gardens, represents at the same time almost a grotesque, lunar, version of it. But above all, the “Sacro Bosco” presents itself to the visitor as a labyrinth of emotions and illusions, suspended in time and in nature, made up of hermetic verses engraved in the rock, of monstrous allegorical sculptures, some frightening others bewitching; of references to mythology and history, of exotic and fantastic creatures. According to many scholars, the entire complex would represent a real initiatory path in which each sculpture, each work, with their own hidden meaning, would correspond to a stage towards a higher and deeper step of human knowledge.
The magic of this place has fascinated some of the greatest artists over the centuries, including Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Salvador Dali '.
