My dad drove KE44 from Cork City to Whitegate and back twice a day for 10 years. I was in that bus for many trips. That Detroit V6 is one of the many sounds of my childhood 😮

Brilliant video. I went to U.L. in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The campus was served by the old routes (30)2 and 30(8) but KDs could only operate on the latter because of low bridges on the Galway rail line while the KCs on the (30)2 were grossly overcrowded so local BÉ management used to inject a mixture of Ms, MDs, MGs and KEs at peak times, just about all two-person operated too. The gear ratios on the KEs were slightly broader than on the KDs and I used to love getting a cosy KE back into town on a dark winter's afternoon. I think they used to use KE23, 24, 52 and 53 and the latter were tour buses without destination displays. I'll always love the sound of those Detroit engines.

Nice sound to this bus. Its a shame that Ireland no longer make buses as these buses are much better than most of the junk that Alexander-Dennis now make since they stopped production of the ALX400, ALX300 and the ALX200 buses :).

6V71N + Allison V730. Would have been interesting to see the 6v92TA on these too.

@@ct1660 Me, too... the 6V92TA was cleaner-burning than the 6V71, but the Irish didn't beg, going straight to the Cummins L10 for 1983 and later buses.

Bus sure is noisy, more so than U.S. transit type buses. Are buses required to stop at marked rail crossings in Ireland and the UK..?
@fares-please10 жыл бұрын
As far as I know not in Ireland, but not sure about the UK. Thanks for watching!

To Howard1939. Vehicles are not required to stop at railway crossings unless the red lights are flashing and the barriers are down or just flashing red lights on the open railway crossings (some here in the UK have no barriers fitted although these are becoming less common). Hope this helps :).

This one uses a Detroit Diesel 6V71N engine and Allison V730 transmission! In October 1983 they switched to Cummins L10 engines and Voith D863 transmissions (KC, KD series)... marking the start of the Cummins/Voith partnership in Europe (here in North America, that started in the fall of 1984).

@@ClassicTVMan1981X that particular bus is a KE class expressway coach. There were 52 of those built here in ireland.

@@ClassicTVMan1981X the Gardner 6lxb was also used on some. Not quite the growl of a 680 leyland but still made a lovely noise too.
